Well, I think we have learned that, the more things change, the more they stay the same. Union is building a nice program, time will tell if it continues (the economy of Wise County will dictate that) I would like to see a Southwest Virginia school win another State Title, but I'm not gonna hold my breath for it any time soon. I am sorry Jarhead that if Gate City fans treated you badly in the past. Maybe we can find you a "safe place" so all will be well with you.

    Another to soon goodbye

Michael Watkins who was a member of the Virginia High School Bearcats football and baseball teams, graduating in 2016, tragically passed away Sunday morning July 23rd from an auto accident. My pastor, preached a message about our life which resonated deeply in my spirit. He ask the question, "What is your message"? Will your life be a story, few may tell, or will it be a message that you have lived and will impact others? Here we have two young lives gone to early, Brandon Looney and now Michael Watkins. From what I gather these young men left a message with their short lives. A message of dedication to their sport, goodness, goals to reach for and most of all a love for their Lord. I heard this song today and I thought how appropriate to share with their message. It is by Masters Voice and is entitled "How Long A Lifetime Is." This is a portion of the lyrics. "Never take the day for granted, cherish every memory No one knows for certain what the next tomorrow may bring So hold your love ones tightly, treat each moment as a gift Never know how long a lifetime is" REST WELL MICHAEL AND BRANDON

As sad as it makes me Gate city, has the best potential out of everyone to get a state championship in the next 10-15 years. They will be the least affected by the economy and their population should grow when Sullivan finally does what it's going to do. But. My question is can they avoid 3a.

  4. Yes, I know it's still a long way from the last week of December, but since announcements are being made about the tournament, figured I would go ahead and make a thread. Eastside will join Gate City as SWVA reps in the Arby's Classic this year. All I can say is I hope that Eastside does better than the last 1A SWVA school in the Arby's (Hurley).

There are and have been serious discussions by the powers that be in Scott County about limiting the numbers on out of state kids, I personally have two nephews and a niece that live in Carter's Valley who have attended Scott Co. schools from Kindergarten on and many other people from that area's children do also because of the joke that Hawkins County schools are. Gate City's freshman class has the potential to be a special group, but time will tell. The issue of being 3A will not rear it's head for a few more years, but I see all of Southwest Virginia's high schools 3A in 10-15 years not because of population growth but because of consolidation. Wise County may be the first place it happens, I have heard grumblings about a couple years ago. It will be the only option for the counties effected by losing all those students.
