Rustburg played 4 teams with winning records. They lost all four. They had some close wins over bad teams. However, they had very close games, in losing, to the #1 teams in 2A and 4A, and a top 10 team in 3A. Difficult to figure out. I will, however, be rooting for Abingdon all the way!

Maybe Buckingham will be looking ahead so much for their trip to Richlands that they'll forget about Martinsville coming to town Friday. lol ! Hopefully the Dogs can keep it within 40

Im one of the people that saw the topic of this thread and was excited to read about it just to open it and find that it was bull$#!t.

This is a pretty good community we have here, everyone contributes and everyone is interested in football across SWVA. If you just want to run your mouth about a program/team I recommend going down to the nearest gas station, walk around back and im sure you will find someone there who wants to here what youve got to say.

Do I coach from the bleachers? yeah I do. But at least I dont run my mouth toward teenagers on the internet

I just got back from the trip I had to make to Alabama for the funeral of my close family member and i just wanted to thank all of you that kept us in your thoughts & prayers and for all well wishes I got on here.  I know this has nothing to do with football,  but I just wanted to thank you all !
Good luck to all of your teams this weekend and safe travels to and from the games !

Ryan4VT, I am obligated to say "Go Heels"!  A disclaimer, my wife received her undergraduate degree from UNC-CH in 1989.  My first game in Chapel Hill was 1987 and we've seen some good times, see Mack Brown, and some really lean times as well.  Glad to see their football on the upswing.

My wife and I are totally disgusted by the academic scandal (UNC)......no justification for it.....it does come with the territory in big time sports.  Beamer is a class act all the way...hope the fans remember what VPI football was like in the Bill Dooley era....I certainly do and Coach Beamer's contributions are tremendous...and that is not nearly a strong enough adjective. Hope they hire well....good for everyone when the local schools do well.

It would come down to riders. Union and Appo have the same exact max. So it all depends on riders if they both win.

For Abingdon, I think the Blackburg win over PH-Roanoke really helped.  I didn't look at the formula, just going by the fact that PH is a 5A school with an ok record.

To the rest of AHS's opponents that we've already played......good luck Friday night :)

In a serious note, hope that all area teams play to their maximum potential and that there aren't any injuries.  From a selfish standpoint, let me make out some of the schedules for the next few weeks......I'd stagger some games for Friday and some for Saturday.........to allow me to attend multiple games of my choice :)    Yeah, that would be nice :)

EHC, game of the week in the PD area will be Magna Vista @ GW-Danville. Both teams with a ton of athletes, MV with a Wake Forest commit and GW with a NC State commit( both are DB/WR). Will be a big time atmosphere in Danville on Friday. Also Mavahi should beat Patrick Co on Friday to finish 4-6, could easily be 7-3 as they have blown 3 4th quarter leads in losses to McMichael, Tunstall and Halifax Co. Former VT defensive end Orion Martin is got the program going in the right direction but they shouldn't be a threat to any of the SWVA powers. It's just good seeing the Dogs being competitive again. For awhile now football was just a distraction until bball started.

BW I agree about the not holding s grudge part. As for the old LPD forum days, I was such an arrogant arse beach then. How amazing his grace truly is. I don't know that individual anymore. DJ thanks for the kind words on my son. God has truly blessed me with more than I deserve with both my sons. BW is their a chance of a Union vs Martinsville matchup in round 1? If so be careful with the Bulldogs. They have to play an insane schedule and the record can be deceiving. The Central coaches are saying we are hosting, but I'm thinking Dan River has to lose. I don't care either way except I'd like the extra concessions money for out band kids, but beating Dan River at their place would work just fine:) it's been way too long since folks in Wise and Pound have celebrated a playoff football win:)

Not trying to stir the pot but the Abingdon kid who played in Florida, started off in Abingdon, went to Florida and back to Abingdon.  At least one poster on this forum went above and beyond normal call of duty to try to help this kid.....and not in ways that pertained to football....rather in a way to try to help someone who really needed a break in the game of life.

Fellas lets not argue about what happened years ago. Its over and done with, Lets focus on the next 6 weeks. probably the most exciting post season that 2A will ever have. No need to bad mouth each other, especially over something that is way in the past. Lets focus on the present and the future for these great football teams. When Powell Valley was around, yes I heard many negative things about that program but I see Union as complete opposite. They have a good coach, good team, and a lot of class. Giles has a good coach, good team, and a lot of class. Would love to see these 2 teams meet up. Instead of arguing and getting hot headed, we should be getting excited for whats to come!

Union_Fan, you also left out one other variable not related to officials, fans or the other team's facilities......Turnovers!!!  I know that you all are going to a place that might not be an easy place to play....I hope that you all will take care of the ball.

Not saying that either team will turn the ball over but that is a "wild card" that can allow a lesser team to hang with or even win against an opponent with more talent.  I hate turnovers, especially fumbles, with a passion.  I wish you and Union the best of luck tomorrow night!  Hope that no one gets injured and that the ball is treated like gold :)  I think you all have a better team than Letcher Central.

I graduated in 75 from another local high school(F-C) and played against all of the names you mentioned above, I still think the 75 state champs had about the most talent on it as a whole as any team I've witnessed over the years, Mason and Varn went to Clemson, Mahan to Tennessee then Hampton, Burgess played D1 somewhere and has had 2 sons play bball for VCU over the last few years and a bunch of others played D2 and D3. The early 60's(the Sonny Wade-Taylor Edwards era) till the early 90's were the golden era of Mavahi football. Hard to believe they only have 2 state championships. But they did have to play AAA from 67 thru 74. They still have those 14 state bball championships to fall back on, lol. Good to talk about M-HC history with you EHC

RichlandsAlum, I like your comment about the possibility of blackballing a district team because it has happened before. In fact, I was thinking about starting a thread concerning this very topic.

In 1978 and 1979, Martinsville was essentially blackballed from the Piedmont District.  There was an old provision in the VHSL stipulations that allowed teams to compete for a district championship if they played all but one of their district opponents.  Guess which opponent was omitted from EVERY Piedmont District school during those years?

The theory behind the antiquated rule is that is was done in the segregation area in an attempt to not segregate athletics.

Whatever the reason, it certainly did happen.  The schedule was brutal for Martinsville.  As a true AA school, they had to fill out their schedule with very strong AAA teams such as GW-Danville, Patrick Henry-Roanoke and Pulaski.  Some of the strong AA teams that they were able to play included William Byrd and Southampton High.  Martinsville's JV and 8th grade teams followed a similar schedule as the varsity (not the exact same teams).  As an 8th grade player on one of those teams, it was both fun and very, very challenging.  We got to miss a little bit of school as we were going to Roanoke or Lynchburg to play but the opponents were very good.

Anyway, the old bylaw/stipulation was abolished but not before a travesty had already taken place.  In 1979, Martinsville did not make the playoffs.....however, their resume included wins against Southampton (the AA State Champ in 1979) and PH-Roanoke who was AAA runner up that year.

I still try to remember that high school athletics are supposed to be for the kids and to benefit of the players....I think sometimes, we adults get too carried away about sports. In 20 years, our kids aren't going to remember the score of every single game. They will however, remember working together and sacrificing for a common cause.  If they are lucky, they will have a chance to play on a good team at some point.  I just hope that we adults provide an environment that our children will look at fondly years after school is over.

EHC, segregation had nothing to do with it. This rule came about 6-7 years after intergration of Martinsville-Henry Co schools. This was called the "Martinsville rule" by the VHSL and was brought about by the school AD's and principals who were tired of MHS beating their football teams very badly. The rule only applied for football. At the time the Piedmont was a 10 team district and the rule stated you only had to play 8 district games to qualify for the championship instead of 9. So everybody dropped the Dogs in football, but played them in all other sports. A fellow whose last name was Carter who played on those teams wrote a book about the teams experiences over the 2 or 3 years that the Dogs had to play under this rule, all leading up to when Martinsville went to Southhampton and beat them 7-0 to end a long home winning for Southhampton who by the way won the state championship that year with their only loss coming to the Dogs. If you can find the book EHC it's a good read, a lot of good memories from bygone era. Football hasn't been good as a whole in the area recently except for Magna Vista the last few years.
