The Gate City LL has a lot of Tennessee kids that come and play and then go back to Tennessee and play middle school and high school. I hope that some of the kids hang around now that the Sullivan County consoladation has occured and maybe some of the kids will play football as well as Basketball. Football in SW Va is changing and not for the good because of the population declines and the lack of interest by the kids. The parents are scared to death by the CTE data and other safety concerns and the kids just have other things they care more about than football.we are  expecting our first grandson in September and our son who played high school football has already said he would steer him away from football. These are the times that we live in and we might as well get used to it.

If it is true from a total outsiders perspective "My how the mighty have fallen" Richlands went from the best coaching staff in the area, to the one season (kinda) Wells experiment, to the Eastside coach with a losing record! I hope it works but always remember you are one hire a way from being an also ran.

Every Richlands Blue Tornado Head Football Coach is given a Gold Card to show to Richlands area business.
Free Meals, Free Booze... Hell, I think you can even have a funeral for free with that card.
That has to be well over 6 figures in worth.

Shhhhhhhh! That's a secret. Don't tell anyone. He's a good young coach. Richlands and Lee may be listening.

There's a coach down in Valdosta who might be looking. He seems like he'd be a good fit.

The first school I remember was Gate City in the 1970s. I believe it was a steam engine train whistle either on a flatbed truck or trailer. GC dominated the 10 team SWD throughout the decade. The train horn was loud, intimidating, and menacing. You could also use those same adjectives to describe Blue Devil fans who circled Legion's track while taunting both the visiting team's bench and their fans.

I've heard the same.  My nephew does travel ball, so I've been able to get out and see some of the local talent and having conversations with many parents.  Gate City is setting on a wicked hotbed of talent from 6th grade up in Hoops.  They will be a problem for the rest of Region D after next year (Union the heavy favs for next season, 2021-22).  Not to change the subject about GC's coach, but speaking of young talent coming up, Giles has plenty of it from 6th grade and up in football.  We won't be down for long.

Since his boys are all out of HS (I think), it makes sense to take the job and the extra money. GC has such a good infrastructure, they shouldn't fall off a cliff, but they'll need to make a quality hire to ensure GC is still one of the best 2A basketball schools in long run.

It is easy to hit a low hanging piñata. And that is what GC football is right now. Will it ever return to the glory it once was? Who knows! I know as a fan they have given me so much pleasure that I can endure the pain. Gate City has lost all it's big money boosters and all it's elite athletes play other sports now and the losing has created a sense of apathy. Football evolved and GC football did not and hence the struggle. So when you combine apathy, lack of athletes and no financial support you get what you have now. Always remember Football more than any other sport runs in cycles and the cycle at GC is down right now, and the board is a little more boring without the GC fans!

SXSW reacted to Hokie101 in Gate City Football: where are all the experts?
As stated here multiple times, until the Little League program has a complete overhaul to get kids interested at an earlier age, there won’t be much success.  GC needs multiple seasons like last year to build momentum and attract players walking the halls while developing the elementary age kids at the same time.
