Coach Carlock would not schedule any single A teams period.  It did not matter if they were 5 minutes away and were 10 time champions.

We will see how the fans really feel about him once football actually starts.  If they struggle, the arm chair coaches will be up in arms.  Happens everywhere.

It’s hard to follow a VHSL HOFer (or what will certainly be one).  Cue the Graham fans nodding in total understanding.

The current and former Richlands basketball coaches are non-teachers. Fred works for the town (although he did work for the school system at one point in time) and Fuller owns a pharmacy.

I'm seeing a place named Poplar Gap Park, a county park that was built in 2001 on a former strip mining site.  The park appears to contain ballfields (football, baseball, softball) along with a fairgrounds area.  Is this the proposed location?
@olewave mentioned Corps of Engineers funding. Is Buchanan in-line for COE funding similar to DIckenson Co. when they built Ridgeview?  If so, it's a no-brainer. It's akin to your school system winning the Powerball.

If the Corp of Engineers is going to had you a check for 236 million, there should be thoughts of JOY!!!

And to the point about the quality of basketball there, you're probably showing your age with your post and I am showing mine with this response.  Beginning with the '82-'83 season Richlands went on a consistent winning trajectory.  The Blues won the SWD tournament (under the old 11 team configuration) twice in three years and closed out the end of that decade by sweeping both regular season and tournament titles three years in a row.  Even as enrollment was beginning to decline, the program put five different teams on the court on a consistent basis (varsity, jv, 9th grade, 8th grade, and 6th/7th grade) while still cutting kids in tryouts.
Oh, and the girls were pretty good during that stretch as well. Pretty much mirroring the boys side -- although the Lady Blues actually had better success in the postseason.  1986 team lost a close game in the Class AA state semifinal (well before the basketball playoffs were expanded to 6 groups).
All of this contributed to a solid identity for Richlands as a "basketball school."
 

For "some" of us older G-MEN, the sound of that horn means only one thing. It's time to work!! Get you ass up and go!! Coach Carlock used to blow his air horn in the locker room when we had 2 minutes to get on the field for practice. You didn't want to be late for stretching lines or anything else for that matter.

Maybe Princeton's players should be playing for Princeton if you want them to win games.

My comment was't to pick on the Blues if that is the way it was taken. My intent was to say there is homecookin everywhere, Bluefield-Richlands- Pulaski ( I lived in Pulaski I've seen it)- anywhere! It
is a shame but it is a fact, in a way 50kw is right, you have to roll with the punches wherever you play. You want to see some homecooking go see a game at Salem (Va) or Mingo Central in WV, it is rather 
embarrassing for even a general fan to watch those two places, Salem is usually so good it doesn't matter and Mingo Central will pull your pants down for you! Hope everyone has a great day!

Well folks, we're back and unretired.  Uncle Percy was wanting to unretire last year when his UN-beloved Salem Toy Soldiers lost 3 in a row (I believe that was last year). Uncle Percy was doing cartwheels, back flips, jumping up and clicking his heels together, and even won a Flat Footin' Contest.  (1- he can't dance worth a lick; 2- we all thought he had a "bad" back). That was UNTIL, UNTIL he and Cousin Delbert went to Johnson City, TN and got to see The Donald J Trump, President, third row seats.  Well folks football pickin' was out and politicin' was in. Didn't take long for Uncle Percy to find out he was much better at football pickin' than be a politician.
We had our picks for last week but, Uncle Percy ran off with them in his pocket when he and Delbert went off chasing a U.S. Senator from Virginia. 
Time to pick some losers.
Bluefield, WV at Princeton
This is the opener for the Tigers.  The Tigers haven't had much success against the Flat Tails in a long, long, long, long time. They hope to change this Friday. The Flat Tails smacked the Feds around last week and won their "track" meet. The Flat Tails will be looking to defend and win another Mercer Cup (The Feds are included) this Friday.  The Tigers will come out roaring but will find out that no matter how loud you roar, a Tiger is no match for a Flat Tail.

The Orange Tabbies will cross Buzzard's Roost to take on the Blue Imps of Castlewood this Friday trying to claim another Buzzard's Roost Trophy.  The Tabbies clawed their way to a victory over The Buckskin LongRifles of Lebanon last Friday. However, The Blue Imps ran into a bunch of Rowdy Rebels last week and it was not pretty. We doubt that The Imps will have enough time to repair and resharpen their pitchforks by Friday for a Tabbie attack. Looks like  "Dean" Hubbard's Orange Tabbies will be taking home The Buzzard's Roost Trophy.

 Coach did not win number 200 last week and Uncle Percy had written a nice little jingle about the Generals and Bears last week. This week The Big Blue Wind Machine will be blowing into Bullit Park to do some Bear wrestling. The Bears sharpened their claws last week against a bunch of, not to well armed for Bear Hunting, Generals. The BBWM will be blowing extra hard this Friday after their lost to Gate City. The BBWM will be flinging the ball all over the place, Yet, they will not have enough wind to blow these Bears away.

Rye Cove and Hurley
Interesting game, both are 1 - 0. The Eagles will be flying into The Cliff hoping to build a Roost on top of it. Don't know much about the 1 - 0 Eagles because they have yet to play a game. Last week they won 1 - 0 over the Jenkins Cavaliers by forfeit. Now the Rebels rolled into Naugatuck and came away with a hard fought victory over The Tug Valley Brawlers. Now Naugatuck is a tough place, even on Sundays, to win a football game. These Eagles may be in big, big trouble. Look for The Eagles to be flying home minus a lot of tail feathers.
