Warriors_XO reacted to Unchained in Central @ Union
Ah we could gripe about us not using Gibson more on slants and such that are so often available. He has serious YAC potential as a WR,but we've forgotten him:(. As for Central being lackadasical that's a ton of arrogance there. If Union doesn't get your attention after going to Mitchell and ousting the team that knocked the Warriors out last year I don't know what does. Seeing a screen from our team lately is as rare as Haley's comet lol. I agree with you on the Central coaching though. It would have been interesting had that talent been at Union. Miserably short of potential there, but then again we're all armchair coaches here:)

I think more than anything Central was outcoached. Travis had them more confused than a cat trying to cover up poo on a marble floor:) In my opinion that was his finest coaching to this point. He had his team focused and very well prepared.

So far the best excuse I had heard this week from the Wise guys was that a Central star got drunk the night before the Union game (and they're throwing him under the bus HARD-after all he did for that bunch). That was REALLY reaching:). If Union and Central played 10x they'd most likely split. Both are good teams. No excuses need to be made

thats not an excuse. its an observation.ivee been hearing how great this central team was supposed to be with this group of kids but yet they have not won a district or regional title. so in my observation its same old wise. they win a few games just not the big championship games. again my observation.

Warriors_XO reacted to Union_Fan in Galax vs Holston
Congratulations to Holston on a great year. Very inspiring team, especially, after watching the interviews this week. They played Galax tougher than most thought they could.
Good luck to Galax next week as the Tide make another state finals appearance in search of their 2nd championship.

Go back and read the Union Central thread from the first meeting... plenty of excuses in that one 😂
Hats off to Union and good luck to them. Better prepared and out executed in all facets of the game including coaching.

Definitely odd that they are not enforced the same way. Unless they think it's easier to suddenly turn off an artificial noise than 50 teenagers. 🙃
I noticed that Graham's band played almost continuously the entire game. At first, I thought they were just doing it when Union was on offense, but then realized they did the same while Graham had the ball too. Don't know of any other around here that plays so much during a game.
If they start banning cowbells and yelling, they might as well not have fans there either.

At that time, no. There was no VHSL rule against it. I've heard they were going to add that to the sportsmanship rule along with the band playing once the offense gets to the line of scrimmage, but I haven't seen anything further, so not sure if the change was made.

This is probably why a lot of people hate that horn. I'm all for it at various times throughout the game especially if your team scores but grown men blowing it incessantly while the other team is huddled & then at the line of scrimmage seems a bit much. Others may disagree and that’s your prerogative. I can remember Cam Allen not even been phased at all by it but not every HS QB has the composure that he did at that game in BSG.

It was all run plays. I think we were 1 for 3 passing the whole game.

Warriors_XO reacted to redtiger in formations
Of the teams remaining in AA most if not all of the run heavy teams do run some spread concepts(they will all need it at some point) but they base out of the following:
Central - Wing-T
Union - T
Appomattox- Split Veer
Glenvar- Spread
Stuart's Draft - Pistol Double Wing
Strasburg - T
Poquoson- Wing-T
Amelia - Spread
As these offenses become more popular again they lost some of their intrinsic advantage but right now they're not that popular and are having some success.

Oh boy, I knew that was coming. Misspell douchebag, why doesn't that surprise me lolol
You're the dork claiming Wise using a horn is somehow copying Union and not the numerous other teams who used horns way before anyone else. Alright, I'll give you that: Wise is copying Union with the use of a horn. Union copied it from Giles or GC.
My point, since I guess I need to break it down, is that using horns is not somehow unique to Union so saying anyone else is copying Union seems silly when it's a tradition that predates Unions usage. A team using a train horn isn't unique, as much as that may bother you.

I just don't get how Union could claim Wise is copying them without acknowledging Union took it from somewhere else as well.

Ill have to watch the GC highlights.
Absolutely almost impossible for them to replicate, like I said I think where defenses see the spread more often they're well practiced against it. Run based teams are "contrarian" in these times. They gain an advantage just by being different.

The Gate City highlights someone posted last week was a lot of fun to watch.
You mentioned it being hard for a Scout team to replicate a Wing T or a Straight T. Is it equally as hard for a say Union Scout team to replicate the Spread?

Warriors_XO reacted to Mountain Football in formations
It looked like an advantage this past Saturday. @redtiger touched on it in another thread and I think he's right. When a team is used to playing against mostly "spread" teams it's an adjustment when you go against a team that executes power football like a Union, Giles, Central, etc. The way some of those old Giles teams come off the ball was really impressive.
When you go back and watch the Graham/Union game there was arm tackling or attempted arm tackling from the 2nd quarter on. More than once defensive lineman were going towards the LBs backwards at a high rate of speed. Tough for a LB to make a play like that. That last play of the game will forever haunt me. Lol
Spread is probably an offense thats more "fun" to watch but for us old farts watching a team run it down another team's throat is also enjoyable. Just wish it didn't happen Saturday 😂😂

Imagine that Central trying to be like Union. This time the fan base. I guess I should be flattered. Now the only question is will mine be allowed into Walmart stadium say aisle 13 or 14.

Nah man not you at all. I'm gonna play nice and just say if a betting man was fading someone else's proclamations about local sports over the last six months or so, they'd be wealthier than they started lol

Warriors_XO reacted to redtiger in +1 / ROUND 1 game schedule / scores
Thats a legit factor. The SWD has Spread Gun teams at the top, the M7 has Under Center run based teams with the 2A teams being 3 back, RV being the only strong Gun team in the M7 (GC actually throws the ball well but struggles in other areas). If you're not used to playing physical football in tight spaces it's very different. A decade and a half ago the Spread was the new thing: coaches didn't know how to defend it, players weren't comfortable defending it. Now that script has flipped and 3 back offenses with a TE or two are abnormal and have an advantage.
Look at the difference in Lebanon when they started mixing in/basing out of the Power-I. All of a sudden they're competitive. There are other contributing factors but offensive style is absolutely part of it.

Haysi would have beaten the Vikings twice in 91, but PV didn't make it to the rematch game

Fun fact: only two programs have ever beaten Powell Valley twice in one season. Those were Pennington in 1987. Also Gate City in 2003, 2008, and 2009.
For Appalachia , the two programs to do it were Burton in 90, 05, and 06. Then Clintwood in 07.
No team has ever beaten Union twice in same season. But unfortunately, that will probably happen.
