  1. It was one of the ugliest Beaver-Graham games I've ever watched.  Not much flow from either team, poor officiating, undisciplined emotions. I lost count how many bad/poor snaps from both centers back to their QBs.

Bluefield has athletic players with speed as they usually have but this team has a lot of work to do.if they're going to play for a state championship.  The line needs to figure out who their assignments are pre-snap and block those guys consistently.

Graham has a talented team as well and they should go far the season.  Best linebackers I'll see all year!  Wishing them all the best for the rest of the season!

Has Bluefield ever had this many D-1 prospects on a team all at once...they look to be loaded...i know social media has helped a lot so I wouldn't be surprised if they have had this much talent at once as good as they have been over the years...only if social media was around back in the day.

Never seen this much attention from larger colleges towards members of one BHS football team before.  I remarked to a friend of mine over the weekend that Sean Martin could match the total D1 offers that Yubrenal Isabelle had in '96 and he was a Parade All American.

I'm hearing that D. Powell got his first D 1 offer from Central Michigan last week, too.

Correct and he committed to CMU and coach Jim McElwain over the weekend.  Fantastic for him for this opportunity! Here's the article about it: http://www.cm-life.com/article/2019/02/deiyantei-powell-commits-central-michigan-football-chippewas-jim-mcelwain-mike-cummings-bluefield-west-virginia-recruit-commit-bio-story

I see Concord and schools in the WVIAC on the interest/commitment list for several of these local kids but I don't recall seeing BC much anywhere.  Does BC not even talk these local kids or is something else going on?

Yeah I hated that for Isabelle. I remember during the games I listened to on the radio that year if I recall the Bluefield announcers nicknamed Isabelle the "Bull" and Dews the "Moose" lol because they would just plow over people and they were quick. I thought the Beavers were so invincible after that win over Poca in the semifinal that year and that they would just plow over Musselman. #35 was Dissibio if I'm correct and I didn't know he was an assistant for Graham. Good for him and best of luck to him and the G-Men Saturday!

Correct Disibbio wore #35 and he joined Graham's staff last year. He and Dews were Sophomores during the '95 season.  So was Charlie Tynes and I'm not sure how much he got to play that year because of all the other talent they had.  Set up nicely for them as seniors in '97 to go 14-0 and win Bluefield's first AA title that season.  I had the same thought after the semi-final games when I saw we were going to play the 16 seed.  I was at City Park hanging out with friends and turned to my cousin and said: "Man, we got this!"

I'm pulling for Graham to bring home a state football championship to Bluefield VA.  Best of luck boys!

Musselman was indeed the #16 seed that season. I remember Bluefield was heavily favored by many to beat them and win the championship and there seemed to be a lot of excitement in the city the week going into that game. That game was the game that taught me as a fan that nothing is guaranteed and that you can never underestimate any opponent  Bluefield plays in any given year especially in the post season. Graham went on to win their state championship the following week as a heavy underdog it seemed and it was the Virginia side boys that ended up bringing the title back home, which was cool and seemed to make things better. So since we didn't get a repeat of 1962, hopefully we get a repeat of 1995 where the G-Men can bring their Virginia state title back home to the Bluefield area. Good luck Saturday, the whole community supports you!!

I was at that game.  My first trip to Wheeling to watch Bluefield in a state title game. It was shocking to watch the Beavers fail to field the ball on the opening kickoff.  Mussleman recovered it inside the five and eventually scored to put the Beavers down early and Bluefield never could get into a flow to win the game.  Denero Marriott was a WR/DB on the Applemen who went on the play at Marshall.  I hated it for future Parade AA, Yubrenal Isabelle since that was the only title game he played in and it turned out to be a loss.  # 35 out there for Bluefield is an assistant on Graham's staff this year.  Here's the game video:

Will be interesting to see how the Bluefield/Graham/Bluefield College situation will work out next week.  All three have "home" games scheduled.  Bluefield College plays Saturday at 6 PM, that could make the stadium available for a noon or 1 PM game on Saturday.

Where's Mt. View going to play their games?  Princeton?  I thought I remembered years ago the WVSSAC said their field didn't meet playoff requirements.

  7. Bluefield only had one turnover but only ran 26 plays on offense. LB ran 56 plays and converted several fourth down plays. Hats off to LB they were big, physical, and they ran well to the ball. They were clearly the better team and had Bluefield's defense on their heels all night.

  8. I was surprised this game turned out the way it did,  That 80 yard bomb right after Richlands tied it a 10 was a huge response from Bluefield but the real back breaker for Richlands was throwing the interception and then giving up that last TD before the half.  You could really see the body language of the Richlands team change late in that first half.  They were already having a lot of trouble with the line and Bluefield just wore them out physically.

  9. Bluefield is beatable.  They are having trouble defending the short passes out to the flats and that's had them on their heels a bit when teams can execute that against them. I don't see Bluefield dominating this game by any stretch and I think it'll come down to a late score for who ever wins this game.
