Va High 16 Abingdon 13. Each team had less than 150 yards of total offense.
I will admit that I was surprised by both Abingdon and Va High last night. Abingdon was not near as bad of a team as I was being lead to believe and Va High did not look near as good as they did at the jamboree the week before.

While I can agree with some of what lookoutmountain is saying I will have to weigh in here about Battle and Abingdon (and all other Washington County schools). Washington County does not allow kids to be held back in 8th grade that is why Battle and Abingdon and the others don't do it. However, if you are well enough off financially and can afford to send your child to a private school for a year to have them repeat 8th grade in the private school you can them bring them back to the the public school for 9th grade. I have been told that this is starting to happen more often at Abingdon, but I do not have any proof of this happening. Smyth County also does not allow holding back of 8th graders.

Great to see you back Leonard!

Falconman and Southbound are great entertainment. I hope they never "graduate" and always play for Abingdon.

I haven't seen Richlands yet this year but I have seen Gate City. They have struggled at time (Pulaski & Grundy) and looked pretty good at times (Union). The biggest difference I see with them compared to the last few years is depth. Their starting 11 on each side of the ball are still pretty good, but after that the second team did not look good in any of the scrimmages.

I can't wait! Leonard Rules!

I thought Union was probably the best team there with George Wythe being a close second. Probably the most surprising game to me was the Grundy/Gate City game. Grundy took it to GC. GC didn't look anything like they have in the past. Just when I was getting ready to write them off for this year they then came out and gave Union all that they could handle. Never write off Gate Cty.

The VHSL could've simplified things significantly by dissolving all of the existing districts and simply realigning schools based on the proposed Conferences. (For example, Conference 39 is essentially the historic soul of the old SWD. And as a long-term outcome, I wouldn't be shocked to see the districts move themselves toward that very kind of alignment.)
If they would do this, it would clear things up tremendously. If they are dead set on going to 6 classifications, I can't think of any reason not to do this.

My guess is that this project will kill the other 2 (especially the one at Exit 5). I can't see this area supporting 3 major projects of this size.

Holston High School has been doing it for about 5 years now. The kids and the fans love it.

They need to take a good look at Va High. They recruit heavily and don't even try to hide it anymore. I have a friend whose daughter plays softball for VA High. I ran into him towards the end of the season this past May and joking asked him who they were recruiting for next year. He told me that Va High's coach was recruiting 3 girls from Tennesse High and 2 girls from Wallace Middle School ( the John Batte feeder school). Haven't heard the final outcome of the Tennessee High girls, but the 2 from Battle will be at VA High next year.

I was talking to a long time (28 years) high school coach the other day and he said almost exactly what you are saying. He said the biggest difference between kids today and "back then" was that the kids back in the day actually worked outside and did manual labor. He said todays kids probably spend twice the time in the weight room as they did back in the old days but that the kids from back in the old days were stronger because they were out doing manual labor on farms or working as laborers for contractors or whatever. He said even though todays kid can probably bench press more weight, the kids from back in the day had more of what he called "brute" strenghth.
