Union vs Abingdon

Unfortunately I expect Union to struggle here. Abingdon is efficient as efficient gets and the Union defense has completely dropped off the map. From coaching to just getting blown off the line of scrimmage. Hopefully #3 can run like a man possessed and keep us in it.

I think it's the scheme and effort more than anything.  Versus Richlands they played great first half and second half no effort at all

Abingdon’s D-line is the best in the M7.  They are huge and completely stuffed anything between the tackles and did it with only 6 in the box.  Yet, on three consecutive drives RV tried to run up the middle on 1st down. They will add another 1-2 in the box against Union. RV’s defensive play calling was horrible, offensive wasn’t much better.  Union should keep it closer because, believe it or not, their defensive coaching is better and they will adjust.  RV’s DB coaching is horrible.  The RV QB has taken a big step back in the last couple of games.  He just couldn’t make one clutch throw last night…threw several fades out of bounds.  Might have to readjust RV expectations…3rd best team in M7….no further than 2nd round playoffs.  Coaching is a liability with this team.

The lack of effort drives me crazy. Against Central particularly we had a few plays where Union could have laid hits on the central ball carriers and just straight up got out of the way. Not that it would have mattered or made a difference but it’s the principal of it. Maybe you cause a fumble, who knows. But it wouldn’t have mattered on Walmart hill that night.

Unions defense has been awful last 2 weeks.  Right now our best defense is giving the ball to Lomax and running the clock.

Might've done better if they didn't decide to move Jervis around and put Satterfield on the center.  I blame the coaches on that mess

I like Abingdon in this game. Not because of coaching our anything special. I believe they are a step or 2 ahead of everybody in the M7.  Union can keep it close with Lomax, but if Abingdon gets out to an early lead it's over.

Friendly reminder that Abingdon has 300-350 more students than the other M7 schools and shouldn’t be eligible to win M7 conference titles. It makes a difference folks.

Good luck to the Union folks, the Falcons are a really tough team.

I like having them in the district though makes everyone else better.

Meh….crazy but true.  They have a heck of an advantage over the other schools being a 3A playing in a 2A conference.  It would never happen but if they rained the school districts they could even it out.  They have Holston, Patrick Henry and John Battle just minutes away.

Cop out.

Volunteer has 1124 students.

The other schools in their conference are Greeneville, Elizabethton, Seymour, Grainger, and Sullivan East.

The school closest to Volunteer’s enrollment is Grainger. And Grainger has just over 900 students. That’s a 200 some student difference.

Volunteer doesn’t exactly dominate. We never have.

Don’t whine about enrollment.

Simple truth , the defense that Union runs is terrible, it is designed for three stud lineman and LBs who are very athletic, you cannot run that D with a nose tackle who weighs 170lbs ( Satterfield) . Three down and wide gaps make it impossible to cover all the running lanes, and if the QB takes off( Graham) he can run all night. At least send a LB every now and then

Definitely won't work vs Abingdon Richlands QB had all day to throw.  He'll pick us apart rushing 3 guys

so how do you explain GC kicking their butts in boys BB for 3 years in a row,  how do you explain the abingdon girls BB, SB, VB not dominating,      GC, PV, APPY, VA HIGH,    all these schools have had their years in the past and they will again in the future,  its all about the work done early on in the trenches with the youth groups.

Abingdon has always had athletes.  It definitely doesn't hurt to have a much bigger pool to keep things rolling.  Simple math looking at enrollment numbers.  On the flipside they can only play 11 at a time.  Seen some small schools hang with big schools too many times to say it isn't fair.

With that being said,  still looks like some of the old highlands district play, come out hard but if it's a very physical game,  they'll wear down. Only bad thing is nobody plays that physical anymore.  If union can find their groove again on defense then it'll be a close game that could go either way, otherwise it'll be a long night.  Abingdon does a great job getting their studs in space with the ball.

This whole generation of players couldn't tackle the backup jv quarterback from 1992.
