  1. Green is such a dumb color. Why would ANYONE ever use it. 😉

  2. The coaches could meet at the Bonanza parking lot & last man standing buys dinner and gets #1 seed.

  3. Pretty sure this happened several years ago with Richlands, Graham and someone else. They do some kind of drawing and the two "losers" of the drawing play each other. Loser of that game is the #3 seed in the district tournament. Winner of that game plays the "winner" of the drawing to determine the automatic region bid and #1 district tournament seeding. Both of these games would take place at a neutral site.

  4. Like clockwork... The Cicadas are set to reappear this year and so does the Graham stadium debate.

  6. Kelly green is so difficult to match up, whether its clothing or paint. I would like to see the wooden bleachers get replaced with metal ones.

    Updated football fields

You might think it's rubbish, but it's not. Bluefield WV is not fiscally responsible which is why the rent keeps raising. When the turf was put down in 2007 the city of Bluefield was charging 35k a year in rent. That money from tazewell and mercer county school boards were supposed to be put in an account that was 70k yearly for turf replacement. I was told that personally by the director of parks and rec. When it came time to replace the turf the city had spent the money and had to get the money from the schott foundation. Then they raised the rent more. Not to mention they take 20% of concessions from the band. They arent going to miss Graham. They have BU and BSU now. You can doubt it if you wish but it's going to happen.

  8. Most of this is complete rubbish. First when you do a true financial assessment Tazewell County comes out way ahead renting Mitchell Stadium. It costs way more in primary and secondary costs to have a stadium. Think insurance, security, utilities, maintenance, etc. Second. Graham and Bluefield alternate first pick for games. Last year Bluefield had to move two dates to accommodate Graham and Graham had to move one date. Next season there are once again three conflicts. If that remains Graham will move two and Bluefield one. There was a time 25 or so years ago when neither paid rent. It is true at that time Bluefield always got first pick. But when Graham started paying rent that they insisted on equal access to dates and the home side. They were granted those requests. Third. Is Graham going to pay rent for the one home game with Bluefield every other year? Is Graham just going to let Bluefield be home every year and use WV Referees and rules? Is Graham going to let Bluefield be home every year and let Bluefield keep all of the gate receipts instead of splitting the gate every year like they do now? Now having said that the soccer field issue is a valid point. The soccer team generates almost no revenue so it does make sense to look for an alternative to the gouging the soccer complex charges.

    Sarge Reed passes

To me a legend in the area. Sarge was a long time assistant for Harry Fry at Gate City. In the late 70s he took over as the lead Dawg at Appalachia stepping down in 79 after a 7-3 campaign handing the keys to Tom Turner to take over. Sarge then took over the Rye Cove program in 83 and got the broke on the brink of a state title in 88. RC had defeated Jonesville at Jonesville near the end of the regular season before losing to the Dogs in a mud bowl in the region finals during the improbable run for the crew from Jonesville. Sarge stepped out of coaching after 1990 but returned to the Cove in 97. He was to be he HC but took the assistant title instead so a former player, Joe Carter could be the HC. Sarge still ran almost everything for the program for the next three years which were some of the programs winningest teams. He took over the Twin Springs program in 2003 as they were coming out of a really rough stretch. I asked him why he was heading up there. Coach told me he liked a challenge and had coached at GC and RC, he might as well mark off the last county school before he retired for good. Coach stepped down after only two seasons. He led TS to two of their programs three region final games during those two years. Coach Reed wasnt flashy. He wore the same clothes to practice everyday and its hard to tell how many miles had been put on his 80s Thunderbird. He expected you to be physical as he said he only felt like he had lost two ballgames when his teams were the most physical one on the field. The playbook wasn't super deep on either side of the ball but like the nickname "Sarge" practice was drilled like military over and over to run things to perfection. He commanded respect but showed his "bigguns" a lot of love over the years. RIP to a SWVA coaching legend in my book.
