LongTimeSWVAFan got a reaction from Unchained in Union @ Abingdon
The poor grammar in the Union football graphics never ceases to amaze.

I forgot about that one, still just one playoff win in 36 years. Not a single kid playing today was alive the last time the high school in Wise won a playoff game. Nothing would make me happier than to see that streak end this year. I just worry if they don't beat Union they're going to be like a 4 or 5 seed in the playoffs and have a tough time winning their first game.

LongTimeSWVAFan got a reaction from olewave in Grundy and the future
In 15 years Grundy has dropped two classifications and Buchanan County has closed Whitewood and Garden. Council essentially stays open due to geography alone and every school in the county is losing students.
Grundy and Buchanan County''s future lies in consolidation. A school of Grundy - Hurley - Twin Valley kids might could compete at the 2A level. As is, there is no hope at any level, sadly.

If Abingdon beats Richlands, Richlands will fall to six, four through six are very tight. Union's best bracket involes this in my opinion.

You've seen both Appomattox and Union, how would you evaluate each team relative to each other other?

LongTimeSWVAFan got a reaction from DonaldKt in Union at Central
Thoughts? This has become a pretty good rivalry recently in all sports. Hatred from both sides. Union has more overall team talent but it's at Central and the Warriors always seem to play the Bears tougher than many think. Central gave the game away last year at Union, so don't be shocked if the district trophy ends up at Central High.

LongTimeSWVAFan got a reaction from Ryan4VT in Richlands @ Gate City
Shame these two are playing in the opening round. I really feel like they both beat Union/Graham right now. However, it is what it is and the winner gets hammered on the bracket even more Friday when they will play Martinsville.
As for this one, it'll come down to who makes shots. Ball is a great player for Richlands but he's going to need some help to beat GC. Between Ervin, Mac and Barnes you're guaranteed 45 points and they get enough from Collier, Qualls, etc that it makes it near impossible to hold them under 65.
Richlands is playing its best ball of the year but I can't see them winning this one unless the Devils get in bad foul trouble (which can happen).
I'm taking Vermillion's crew 77-63.

You can basically pencil GC in as one of the two regional teams every year. Everybody else is playing for one spot.

LongTimeSWVAFan reacted to Bearcat Bob in Union @ Clarke Co
I recall that they had sets of smaller bleachers on either side of the main visitor bleachers. Maybe they move them to the baseball field in the off season? I do not have a dog in this fight but I think I am going to be a Clarke fan for this one...Union fans are starting to sound a lot like Richlunds or maybe Gate City!

LongTimeSWVAFan got a reaction from SWVAgridiron in Glevar @ Union
Glenvar was definitely bigger. They just faced the same problems others have this year in that Union can get the ball and score on two or three consecutive possessions and if you have to punt you get in a hole you can't get out of.
I've been to two games this year where I thought Union was the inferior team and won, yesterday and Richlands. Coach Turner was the difference in both, his play calling yesterday was incredible and the decision to call timeout after seeing Glenvar's alignment on the two point try was crucial.
I for one hope Turner keeps pushing the right buttons for two more weeks.

LongTimeSWVAFan got a reaction from SuperX in Predictions
I picked Glenvar to win and think they will but, I'm not sure you can use his predictions on Union. He doesn't count out of state games and Union has two wins over larger out of state teams. David Crockett went 6-4 in 5A in Tennessee if I remember correctly.

Answer to that is simple...don't use your last week as an open week. Somebody will play you.

LongTimeSWVAFan reacted to GMan in Graham @ Union
He went out on the drive that Graham tied the score at 21...Union outscored Graham 28-0 with him on the bench...

Ridgeview boy's basketball is in for an awakening. The difference between A and AA is enormous.

LongTimeSWVAFan reacted to sup_rbeast in Graham @ Union
They were behind when he went out...he's a good back, but I don't think Graham wins even if he didn't get hurt. It would've been closer than 28 points...but no closer than 14 IMO. He didn't start getting big chunks until #50 for Union went out, either. Injuries are part of the game, though...that's just the way it goes. All I know is, if your players are gonna start barking at the other team as soon as they arrive for the game, you had best be prepared to back it up...or you might get your nose rubbed in it a bit before the game's over. -

Gate City should honestly be loaded this year. I'm excited for the season to get started.

You are crazy if you think that Turner's road hasn't been much easier than Owens' with what Turner had coming back. I'm not saying Travis isn't doing a solid job, but it was certainly expected and no shock. Owens on the other hand is

LongTimeSWVAFan reacted to Unchained in Mountain District Player of the Year
Turner has a ton more to work with, a team with everybody back, picked to win the distric and be a state contender. Handing him COY is like giving Bellicheck COY. Central lost Brooks, Stumpf,....etc and was picked occupy the cellar of the distric. Luke Owens COY and his QB POY. Nobody could gripe about either
