  1. For the sake of all 3 programs, I really hope this is either deep sarcasm, or Graham is sending their JV squads. No offense to either Twin Springs or Northwood, but I do not see this preparing Graham for Beaver next week or TS and Northwood getting that much better by agreeing to this. I get the POV from them wanting to play tougher competition, but if I had small numbers, I would maybe find someone else or just play a benefit game against each other.
  2. I don't really care one way or the other either, but we need to look at this from the assumption they'll be traveling by school bus. I know a lot of districts have governors on their buses but, I am not sure at what rate(55 or 65) and the speed limit on 77 and 81 in VA is 70. Also, keep in mind that a bus does not handle like a passenger car. That's where the mountain roads will add more time too. FWIW, I will buy anyone a Frosty if they can make it from Hurley High School to Auburn High School in 2:47 driving a school bus. It takes every bit of an 1:20 in a car running the speed limit to get to 77 from Grundy(middle of town) after traffic lights and the bipolar speed limit changes on 460. And from that same spot in Grundy in a car, the best you can do to HHS is going to be around that 30 minutes if you don't get hung behind a slow poke, school bus, coal truck, side by side, or horse. Yeah, I've been stuck behind everyone of them at some point in time heading to Hurley. Sometimes a combination of the 5. Hurley's wild ya'll.
  3. We’re not even out of dead week and this is already a topic, really? Most schools usually don’t know what they’re REALLY working with until two a days start.
  4. Are those the 2019 lids on their Twitter avatar? I'm normally a traditionalist with helmets and uni's but, THOSE ARE AWESOME.
  5. You do bring up a very valid point in North closing, but remember, Tennessee has no state income tax. That could offset the perceived higher salary in VA vs TN.
  6. According to my sources, the varsity has been playing at the Enoch's Branch field. Coming into Grundy on 460 West, you'll follow that into town, and pass by Walmart. At the next light, the intersection is Rt. 83. Go right to head up Slate Creek, and follow it until you pass BGH, Y, and the high school. From there it is no more than 1.5 miles to the turn off. You will see an Exxon station on your left, and the next left you can make will be Enoch's Branch with a sign for the fields. I would take my time going up the mountain from there as the road is very narrow with a lot of blind spots in curves.
  7. There is a softball field up at Enoch's Branch, which is on up 83 a little ways from the high school, then all the way to the top of the mountain. That is where the baseball field is as well. There is also a super nice baseball/softball complex up at Poplar Gap or Southern Gap depending on who you talk to, and surprise surprise, it's on top of a mountain(or reclaim) in this case too. I believe that softball has been playing up there this season, but cannot be 100% sure without a phone call or two.
  8. I predict the officiating corps will be stretched to it's limits once again. Fans on Twitter will skewer them at any opportunity with blanket statements for an entire association and/or state. The AOA is trying to be more proactive in recruiting officials for ALL sports. This is not just a local issue but, a national one as I am sure most of you are aware by now. For the football association, the average age is somewhere between 50 and 60. We need younger blood before the numbers game gets any worse. If you or anyone you know has even the slightest interest in officiating, we need to talk with them.
  9. CONFIRMED: AKERS TO CASTLEWOOD! 😂
  10. Maybe it'll get moved from Emory to Northwood at the last minute. That seems to be the trend this year.
  11. Well the North does like to exaggerate. Simply going off of my experiences with their alumni and how it has been portrayed to me. It's kind of like how WVU has a very large makeup of kids from Jersey, Elon has the same thing with Tri-State trust fund babies and the like.
  12. ^^^^ This times 1000. Elon is considered a Southern Ivy League school by a large majority of the North. A ton of well to do donors and a huge endowment for academics.
  13. Outside of JSB, how many other HC jobs are left unfilled? I just cannot imagine being a kid in one of these programs with May starting tomorrow, not knowing who was leading their team in July. However, Abingdon hired Amburgey when two a days started and that seemed to work out well, but I think that was just an extremely fortunate case of right place, right time, right team.
  14. Oh to be a fan again. I report next Friday morning for my first college scrimmage of spring ball, have a clinic to attend Saturday, and two more preseason clinics already on the calendar paid for with rooms booked. VHSL stuff usually won't start up until the end of July, but if you pull double duty like me, you literally get about 2 months away from football. I'm not complaining though, just providing some insight to those that are not aware of the work and sacrifice that goes into our avocation as officials. Remember, we don't drop out of the sky on Friday's and Saturday's.
  15. They had 6? last Saturday at Lee. At Battle they were down to 4.
  16. Genius men line baseball socks with airplane bottles encircling their calves and do not have to worry about sharing because you literally have almost snuck a fifth in if you do it right. I may or may not know from experience.
  17. Something to consider, December 15th is a big day of sports at UVA Wise with the All Star game, and a 30 team wrestling tournament going on at the Convocation Center. Parking may or may not be an issue. Either way, that is GREAT for the economy of Wise County and the student-athletes of Southwest Virginia. I for one will be back and forth between the two events.
  18. Unless there are so many cowbells that the stadium simply does not have the staff to confiscate them. I'm not saying a mob mentality works all the time, but we see how far the SEC got at Miss State with getting them taken. There is 0% chance that the on-field crew will call any sort of unsportsmanlike foul because of cowbells.
  19. Can anyone confirm or deny that the press conference announcing the new GC coach has been moved to Emory?
  20. I think you're confused or I have a comprehension issue. Union/Burton is usually Week 1 on Thursday.
  21. Ok, if it benefits that particular bench for them to be adjusted, who on that sideline is going to say any different? The home team can choose whichever bench they prefer, there is no rule that dictates which side a team's bench must be on, so it isn't really all that questionable, although our eyes and brains have trained to be dark jerseys with backs to the press box. I saw it on Twitter over the weekend, so I could definitely see that they moved. What I couldn't see is the clip man, which would take some real dedication and sneakiness to make that move that quickly.
  22. Why were the chains on the home side is my first question? Unless it's similar to a Hurley setup where they are the team facing the press box, that should never be an issue. That matter is trivial compared to the matter that the HL (maybe LJ in this case) did not do a great job in their pregame with the chain crew. You HAVE to keep your eyes on them and most of the time in the back of your head because it is frowned upon to look back. A lot of them do amazing jobs for nothing more than a hot dog and bottle of water at half time, if they even get that. This isn't on the line judge(as the heavily biased article states) as much as the chain crew. The chain crew is an essential part of the game, and I remind everyone I have the pleasure of working with that by accepting that position, they forfeit all bias and are under the direction of the head linesman and referee. This seems like it wasn't communicated, and if it was, it was not communicated strongly enough. 1instripes, I'll agree that probably shouldn't be a line of commentary made by an observer, however, I do not find it shocking. I've learned in my relatively short officiating life span that there are plenty of "cut throat" officials everywhere who never miss a chance to throw their brother under the bus to keep the heat off of their neck.
  23. How about a "Wheel of Fortune" style selection process? Plot twist, Akers and whoever is working the first window at GC pals at kickoff on Fridays has a space on the wheel.
