We’re not even out of dead week and this is already a topic, really? Most schools usually don’t know what they’re REALLY working with until two a days start.

Sod should have been laid in the Spring...that place will be a mess this fall.  It takes a good six weeks for the roots to start establishing themselves under perfect conditions.  Mid-summer isn't "perfect conditions" for sodding.

I predict the officiating corps will be stretched to it's limits once again. Fans on Twitter will skewer them at any opportunity with blanket statements for an entire association and/or state.
The AOA is trying to be more proactive in recruiting officials for ALL sports. This is not just a local issue but, a national one as I am sure most of you are aware by now.
For the football association, the average age is somewhere between 50 and 60. We need younger blood before the numbers game gets any worse.
If you or anyone you know has even the slightest interest in officiating, we need to talk with them.

Maybe it'll get moved from Emory to Northwood at the last minute. That seems to be the trend this year.

I've been coaching for over 20 years, heard all of the whining and complaining and done some myself. The simple truth of the matter is, most officials start with two strikes against them. The average fan, player and sometimes coach, wants to blame the officiating for everything. Doesn't really matter how proficient one is, any missed call or questionable call and even good calls are going to be met with harsh criticism. Sure, there are some that are better than others, but what they put up with night in and night out, isn't really worth it.
No system and no amount of money would "fix the problem," so to speak. The simple truth is, people are always going to complain about officials, regardless of how good or bad of a job they do. Overall, I would have to say, that if I was handing out grades for officiating, I would rarely give below a B.
Considering travel time, the B.S. that they have to put up with and the fact that they do a thankless job, it is a job that most would not want to consider, for that reason, my criticism is minimal and more constructive than abusive. Maybe I am getting more mellow as I get older, maybe I am more wise, regardless, my overall, long term on court impression of the AOA is positive.
Not sure about how things are ran from an internal perspective, but I can't think of too many instances in which an official could properly be deemed "incompetent," or "unprofessional."
What many consider incompetency is sometimes just inexperience.
The next time you hear someone complain about the quality of offciating, tell them to go sign up and fix the problem.

Oh to be a fan again. I report next Friday morning for my first college scrimmage of spring ball, have a clinic to attend Saturday, and two more preseason clinics already on the calendar paid for with rooms booked. VHSL stuff usually won't start up until the end of July, but if you pull double duty like me, you literally get about 2 months away from football. I'm not complaining though, just providing some insight to those that are not aware of the work and sacrifice that goes into our avocation as officials. Remember, we don't drop out of the sky on Friday's and Saturday's.

I got it. I just can’t resist an opportunity to gig Riverheads.
They remind me of a sandbagging golfer. Would rather win the first or second flight rather than compete in the championship flight.

Surprised this would be allowed.  School districts in the Shenandoah Valley and central VA aggressively redraw districts to keep schools at the top of their classifications.  Note the 3 Charlottesville area high schools being in the Top 4 in 3A.  I’m positive the VHSL being headquartered within an hour’s drive has nothing to do with this.

Well, I got me a little flask just in case it gets to cold, or we lose, or now that I think about, if we win, the flask will be empty by the end of the fourth. I'm more worried about a pat down. Real men don't carry their flasks in a bag, they carry their flasks in their groin in order not to be caught at the gate, and in order to not have to share with anyone else.
