Or maybe…just maybe…he figured out that (1) he could draw full VRS while (2) teaching gut HS classes and coaching football while (3) living 20 minutes from the ocean and (4) being within 30 minutes of several world-renowned golf courses.

You show me a soul alive that wouldn’t make that trade in a heartbeat, and I’ll show you a liar.

Mance wasn’t scared of Palmer.  If he were scared of challenges, he wouldn’t have gone to Loris, which was a doormat before him and now is competitive.

When it was Richlands it was clearly recruiting -- but when it's Graham is just the Tony Palmer effect. Can't you see the difference?!?!

Precisely.  The talent’s there and the schemes are effective when executed well.  I would presume that the offensive gameplan will be “bread and butter” type plays, focusing on (1) executing correctly; (2) making the best reads; and (3) lack of penalties.

Defensively, focus on keeping contain and improvement within the secondary.  Chilhowie has some raw, but talented athletes last season.

For Tazewell, I wouldnt expect them to show too much.  They will probably work on the run game and blocking.  Hopefully they will run the up tempo stuff some.  I think the passing game for the Dogs will be pretty potent this year.  I think the run game will be better then last year.  Defensively, hope to see good tackling and containing the edge.

I'd say that's a very good take on the Mountain 7. 1-6 seems pretty even and Battle is helping everyone fill out a schedule.  Gonna be some really fun games this season, much like last season but maybe better

Neither.  There's a lot of folks anointing Graham as an unbeatable machine, and I don't think folks understand just how much Graham lost to graduation last season.  Graham is plenty talented and deep still, and you can absolutely pencil them in for a game on Thanksgiving weekend and feel very comfortable about it.  However, from what I've seen thus far, 2022 Graham is stronger than 2023 Graham, and I think that's going to be evident about 9:30 PM on the evening of August 25th.  Graham will be tested in the regular season, and perhaps multiple times before (likely) meeting Appomattox again.  Doesn't mean they won't win them all, and surely they could go 15-0 again.  But let's pump the brakes a smidge on crowning a team that has yet to play a meaningful snap.

It doesn't appear as if the M7 has any particular team that stands out as a contender on a statewide level.  What I see are several good but well short of elite teams.  Also, John Battle is participating.  It's going to be a fun season in the M7 with a significant amount of parity.  It's very possible the M7 champ is 7-3 and wins on tiebreaks.

Can it be August 25th already?

Then there's Saltville, which sits atop an extensive network of natural limestone caverns, salt mines, and gypsum mines. The entire area is prone to sinkholes, including one on Northwood's field during an actual game.  Opponents who can avoid getting swallowed up by the earth usually come away with a win.

The ironic parking issue in Class 1 out this way is that the school with the most down-trodden football program is Lancaster. Large parking lot with two access points. Only issue is if you leave and go north on Rt 3 your are on a two-lane highway for 17 miles. Rappahannock has 2 lots with the back lot being larger. But if you happen to park in the front lot (which is in front of the school with single spaces down the length of the building) you can depart right on a four-lane highway. That's the only school out this way that has parking along a 4-lane highway, although King William isn't far from Rt. 360 (about 3/10 or 4/10 of a mile)  and neither is Essex which is about a mile from 4-lane Rt 17.  Middlesex also is about half-a-mile from Rt. 17. But, those distances seem longer when you're backed up in the parking lot or on the two-lane stretch of road leading to the four-lane highways.

I'm going to tell you about the "old" field at King and Queen Central. Before I start let me say the current facility is located on the same property but runs north to south, while the "old" field ran east to west. Central is scheduled to upgrade its lighting system to college level quality in time for the 2023 home opener. Now, Central didn't have a home field the first 2 or 3 years they played football so their "home" games were at West Point. When they finally got a stadium, it was a combo/field with the lighting system supporting the baseball field which had no outfield fence. The football field continuously had mole problems resulting in twisted ankles and turf-monster tackles. One time a running back was en route to a long distance TD run when he tripped over the pitching rubber that had been left on te field! Seating at the stadium was sparse. I'd say it could accommodate no more than 250 so there was a whole lot of standing going on. The scoreboard was just large enough to display the score, the time and had 4 dots below the time to indicate what quarter the game was in. The clock operator sat in a school desk just below the clock. The console was on the desk and had a wire running to the scoreboard. The stadium lighting was equipped with incandescent bulbs which meant the field was dimly lit. I recall a game played there in the rain and you could hear the light bulbs exploding from contact with the rain!

It must be tough playing football for Marion knowing that if you were a once in a generation football talent, equal to an Ahmad Bradshaw, Thomas Jones, or even maybe Bill Dudley, you'll never be the best athlete to play home games at that football stadium just because of the damn baseball diamond in the east endzone.

Galax is coming into the season having recently played in the PGA of America National High School Invitational in Frisco Texas July 17-19. Galax placed 32 out of 50 schools from all over the country. Most of the top schools were private schools featuring golf academies with players recruited from all across the country.
    T29 - Grayden Laird 70-80-73 = 223
    T69 - Carson Iroler 74-80-76 = 230
    T141 - Talan Gentry 77-84-78 = 239
    290 - Adam Dillon 89-103-92 = 284
    T299 - Jedd McGrady 101-107-88 = 296
The tournament was played across 3 courses. Galax played Fields Ranch West (17th), Fields Ranch East (18th), and The Tribute (19th). Temperatures were between 104-109 degrees everyday with winds gusting upwards of 40 MPH on day two of the tournament. The winds ballooned the field scoring average to well over 80. Grayden distinguished himself finishing tied for 29th in a field of over 350 players and has since received several contacts from D1 colleges. He won a Tarheel Junior Golf Tour event in Raleigh NC back in June with rounds of 70-65 for a -9 under par total. That tournament was held at Lonnie Poole, which is NC State's home facility.
Galax rising sophomore Carson Iroler recorded a hole-in-one on the first day of the tournament in Frisco. Link attached.

Buying a lake-house at South Holston doesn't equate to a change of residency.  Not saying it can't or won't happen, but that's not the case as of August 1, 2023.

In 1A, everyone seems to pick Essex......well because they are Essex. But, they took a tremendous hit at graduation time. Probably a year away from being a serious state title contender, especially with enrollment shrinking. King & Queen also took a big personnel hiit as they had around 12 seniors on a 22-man football team. Their JV lost to Essex like 76-0 last year. Colonial Beach won just once last year. I'd say look out for West Point and Westmoreland.
In 1B, everything I'm hearing (which isn't much) is that Sussex is the prohibitive favorite. They play Essex in the season opener.
In 2A, I agree that it should be a two-horse race between King William and Poquoson. While not as good as their state champioinship team, I'll predict that KW will field a team that was better than the one that lost to Poquoson in the playoffs last season.
