Yep. I love noisemakers and anything that helps build atmosphere. Bluefield used to have a cannon. Loved it. Giles horn is amazing. Gimme all of that lol.

Literally the only part of trips to Bullitt that I hate. Everything else is amazing. Parking is decidedly not.

Have to say hands down is the worst parking situation I've ever seen.
If enough people are there Grundy can be kind of rough to find a spot and not get trapped in after the game...

Galax is coming into the season having recently played in the PGA of America National High School Invitational in Frisco Texas July 17-19. Galax placed 32 out of 50 schools from all over the country. Most of the top schools were private schools featuring golf academies with players recruited from all across the country.
    T29 - Grayden Laird 70-80-73 = 223
    T69 - Carson Iroler 74-80-76 = 230
    T141 - Talan Gentry 77-84-78 = 239
    290 - Adam Dillon 89-103-92 = 284
    T299 - Jedd McGrady 101-107-88 = 296
The tournament was played across 3 courses. Galax played Fields Ranch West (17th), Fields Ranch East (18th), and The Tribute (19th). Temperatures were between 104-109 degrees everyday with winds gusting upwards of 40 MPH on day two of the tournament. The winds ballooned the field scoring average to well over 80. Grayden distinguished himself finishing tied for 29th in a field of over 350 players and has since received several contacts from D1 colleges. He won a Tarheel Junior Golf Tour event in Raleigh NC back in June with rounds of 70-65 for a -9 under par total. That tournament was held at Lonnie Poole, which is NC State's home facility.
Galax rising sophomore Carson Iroler recorded a hole-in-one on the first day of the tournament in Frisco. Link attached.

Football is a cycle. Every great dynasty hits hard times. Talent leaves. Families leave. Kids stop playing.

One day it will turn around. But that day is not today nor likely any day soon. Still can’t wait to show up and cheer on the boys who are out there every week.

61 for Union, give or take a couple.
Media day is Saturday, so we'll see how many are in the pic. Also, we'll see how close we are on the 1 to 1 coach/player initiative. Haha

I'm a true Blue fan, but I am also realistic, so I would agree with this perdiction. I hope I'm wrong, but Iooking at the down fall of the overall program at Richlands and the lack of top tier talent, it may be worse than anyone thinks.  Hats off to the players who dawn the Blue and White for RHS and all their hard work, but it looks like a down year if you look at the talent level of other SWD teams.  I guess at Richlands we now call this rebuilding, which has not been the case for several years, before it was termed reloading.
Over the years I have noticed that it seems as though talent on the high school level runs on about a 10 year cycle and RHS has had their fair share over more than a decade, now we see that cycle with Graham, and Tazewell is getting close, so Richlands will have a few more down years to go through.  Times like this is when we see who the true fans are compared with the fair weather fans.  Let's get ready for some SWD football!!! Go Blues!!!

Having been involved in getting the 8-man sandlot league developed for Galax, I will offer our process.
Our priority was to get the high school involved. Coaches and players! Considering our league was the idea of Mark Dixon, that step was easy. The high school players officiate the youth league games (and get paid for their time). The high school coaches are often in attendance and help youth league coaches teach basic fundamentals. It becomes an entire community operation.
Second, we wanted good people involved in the operation. Coaches and parents that were respected within the community. Having skin in the game is often a positive thing but that's not typically the case with youth sports. Parents can get a little too emotionally invested, resulting in situations that become embarrassing and lead to a drop in participation. Most people don't take youth sports too seriously. They just want their child to enjoy the experience. If they get something rewarding out of it, that's a bonus. But if the process becomes more painful than it's worth, many parents will find something else for their their kids to get involved with and avoid those parents we have all encountered at youth sporting events. Often, as has historically been the case in Galax, they will take their kids to a neighboring league with a better reputation. Galax, Carroll and Grayson have always traded "top-dog" programs over the past 50 years. I know parents locally that took their kids to Mount Airy, NC to avoid the asshats locally. Those people can't be the face of your league! Initially, and for the first decade, our coaches were school system administrators, local business owners, teachers, police officers, city government officials, doctors, dentists, etc. That has dropped off in recent years and you are seeing the result play out at the high school every Friday night for the past year.
Third, someone has to be the face of the league. The person in charge. Preferably someone that commands respect, is willing to lead by example, and isn't afraid to get in someones a** if need be. Galax lost that with the passing of Bud Nelson and the last few years have been bleak. The coaches in Galax now are daddy's who think their kid is the next Caleb Spurlin, despite the fact that daddy is 5'-6" tall and weighs 140 pounds. Keep those people away from the operation of the league. If they insist, let them run the concession stand.
Last, It's been my experience, fundamentals are far more important in sandlot football than learning the high school offense. Mark Dixon taught us that in 2010 and we took his advice and ran with it. If our kids were fundamentally sound before 8th grade, he could spend more time teaching the nuances of the game and less time focusing on basic fundamental. Don't get bogged down with X's and O's. If Mark Dixon didn't think X's and O's were as important to a 10 year old as fundamentals, neither should you!
