blueinbama reacted to Ryan4VT in Richlands at William Byrd
Also, was very happy to see our boys have the NS stickers on their helmets, our coaches had the NS on their polos and the cheerleaders had purple ribbons in their hair.
Byrd lost a senior girl, Nala Saunders, on Wednesday morning suddenly and purple was her favorite color. So I was really happy to see us honor her last night.
Also, I thought it was very classy for the Blues to get to the 2 yard line with 1 minute left and Byrd only having one timeout and instead and scoring and going up 13, we took a knee at the 2 to leave it a 6 point win. Felt like that was a good move, especially given the fact that Byrd was playing for NS.

I wouldn't say FSU "gashed VT's defense", especially in the running game. FSU finished with 94 yards on 28 carries with 85 coming on one play. The other 27 carries resulted in 9 yards. With that said, VT should have had several more scores. VT made its fair share of mental mistakes resulting in points being taken off the board. As an unbiased observer married into a Hokie family, I'm not sold on Jackson as a quality QB either. He is inaccurate and makes bad decisions with the football at times. He made several bad decisions last night but FSU was ill-prepared to take advantage of them. A better prepared opponent would have capitalized on those mistakes.
I agree that FSU wasn't prepared for this game but for anyone who watched Oregon last season, that seems to be a common theme for Taggert. I questioned FSU choice in replacement for Jimbo when they announced Taggert. I question it more-so now!

Now, with that said, you vote does not count. This board covers the schools in the map at the top of the page...period. Don't like it??? Slide on over to VAPreps and get your kicks...I can make it happen...

blueinbama reacted to Canes00 in Chilhowie at Marion
The Canes defense will keep them in it I'm not sure if the offense is polished enough to score enough to win it. Chilhowie always struggles at Marion so it'll be close but I think the warriors will find a way to win this one. Chilhowie 21 Marion 13
Note: I still can't take Chilhowie to win on the pickem though lol

I have a few nits to pick with that particular analogy.
While the atrocities committed by Assad are eerily reminiscent of the atrocities under Saddam, the cultural milieu is markedly different. One, the ouster of Saddam was not driven by Saddam’s own people, while the attempted ouster of Assad in during Arab Spring was. Two, Saddam’s regime was far more sectarian than Assad’s (Saddam was rabidly hostile to Muqtada Al-Sadr), and the boiling undercurrent of radicalism has already manifested much more in Assad’s. Three, ISIS was but a faint gleam in the eyes in Saddam’s era, while ISIS has been severely crippped by military offensives in the Trump presidency (naturally, any area Trump has success sees no media coverage).
I say this as someone who believes that our policy in the Middle East should be (1) defend Israel by all means necessary and (2) let the warring Muslim factions have at everything else.

blueinbama reacted to RichlandsAlum in Getting some personal insight into college recruiting
Latest update in our experience....
Boy made the varsity team (kind of a big deal -- only one other sophomore was invited to join the roster as a field player). Coach actually gave him a choice of playing another year of JV (getting as much playing time as he could possibly want and serving as team captain) or accepting a spot on the varsity team (with the assumption that he probably would not see a lot of game time this season). Son chose the varsity option mainly because he thinks he can benefit from the more intense training requirements compared to JV.
While I still don't harbor any illusions of stardom -- and I'm personally skeptical about his status as a recruiting prospect -- we do realize that several doors of opportunity still remain open to him. If he manages to break into the lineup this year, I guess we will have to get extremely serious about this whole business. And I was in the process of typing that I don't think we're near that point when yet another "personal invitation" to attend a low level Division I "elite level" camp found its way into my email Inbox.
With regard to the camp invitation angle.... He has some pretty extensive plans for this summer (a church mission trip and a trip abroad through school) which will basically prevent him from following up on any of the camp invitations. So our game plan is to contact the programs that might interest him and advise them that although he's not available this summer (for spiritual and academic reasons), he'd still like to be considered. If they continue to communicate with us past that point then he'll whittle it down to a few camps that he might actually attend during the summer of 2019.
If it seems like we're adding obstacles of our own to the process -- admittedly we are. Some of that is an effort to manage expectations (and minimize potential disappointment down the road). Some of it is testing the guidance and role of the Lord in this whole process (the "if it's meant to be" angle). And some of it is due to the fact that he's like most 15 year old kids in that he doesn't really know what he wants to do next week, let alone the next 4-6 years of his life. And ultimately it is his decision.
If all of this is extremely tedious or not very informative, I apologize. Also don't want to come across as bragging about my kid (although I am certainly proud of him and his two younger brothers). But I'm getting a firsthand look at a process that is allowing me to test some of my own theories about athletic recruiting. I still think that recruiters are more influenced by things like physical size than they are by actual "on the field" performance.

This thread (and the ongoing discussion in "Richlands @ Graham" elsewhere) reminds me of an old radio commercial from WRFX in Charlotte. Something along the lines of, "The competition says we suck. We'd just like to thank them for listening."

Bama just beat the #1 team in the nation on a neutral field. Sorry. They proved you wrong.
And remember, Auburn was only a two-loss team when both Bama and UGA lost to Auburn at Jordan Hare. And since Auburn lost to a 4-loss LSU team, you just put your foot in your mouth. Get your story straight.
Starting a thread touting the team that just beat you because you lost your last two games on a neutral field is weak, at best. As I said before, look at the schedule for UCF and maybe, just maybe you'll see how they became undefeated so easily. Their strength of schedule was ranked 103rd in the nation. If that doesn't explain it, nothing will convince you.

UCF is obviously better than Alabama, in the same way that my son’s U4 soccer team is obviously better than Manchester City, based on the records.

blueinbama reacted to Chappy in Chilhowie vs. Riverheads - 1A State Championship
As a Rich Valley/Northwood guy he is pretty well spot on! I am one of the HATES chilhowie people. I am really conflicted about this game, on one hand my Godson is a Senior for chilhowie on the other I can't recall a time that I have EVER rooted for them to win. (didn't want Galax to win either) I guess I will do as I did last week, not attend the game and pull for the other team, to not win.

Marion really impressed me 2 weeks ago. They're not flashy but very fundamentally sound. Ford is one of the better RB's I've seen in the last few years...He just won't go down.
I don't think Marion will win but I believe they can and hope they will. Canes 24-21
