Lot of politics going on here. It led to running Williams out of town in basketball will it in football too?

JIB better pray that Fischer takes the basketball job if not that coupled with this move would have your two main programs going from regional contenders to also rans.

How many years was Burton a regional contender under Williams besides the most recent one? I don't recall him being that successful at Burton, at least not close to the level it was under Stan Wilson.

I think the Adams move is more related to health concerns over "politics".

    my thoughts exactly

    experience as a head coach

    had some success as well

people arent beating down the doors of the school to be head coaches either

Odd that Gate City hired a coach with 0 head coaching experience over Reed since he's such an excellent candidate.

They've made it the past three years 16' vs Richlands, 17' vs. Graham 18' vs Union.

And lost in the first round each time. At some point getting a win and advancing should be the goal instead of being satisfied with just making the playoffs.

Hopefully they will hire internally and keep the momentum and energy that Stone brought to the program.

17-26 in 4 years. Finished above .500 just one year. Never won a post season game in a heavily expanded playoff format. I think Battle needs to raise their expectations. At most schools these results would equal hot seat talk.

I guess the AAU coaches told him that would serve him best.ANDY is a very talented kid and I think his AAU coach maybe thinking of his summer league team and not the kids best interest.

Time to get a new AAU coach. College coaches do not prefer specialization. They want well rounded athletes.

I'll give him a chance but think this will lead to seven more years of bad VT basketball...

When I first heard of the hire I was in the same boat. After having more time to think about it I like the hire as long as he's surrounded with a staff of strong recruiters. He can obviously coach and develop talent but there will be numerous hurdles in getting recruits to give Blacksburg a chance. I believe Young cares a lot about Virginia Tech with his SWVA roots. Buzz was always one foot out the door so it will be nice to have a coach who is loyal to the school. It will take time but hopefully it works out.

Aaron Williams interviewed this week from my understanding. He put in an application at some other places but from what I’ve been told he really wants the Abingdon job. He could make them dangerous in the M7.

M7 is a little tougher than finishing 2nd in the Cumberland every year.

I hate the guy for Central got hurt but listen if I have a kid in the future and he or she gets chucked with an elbow or sucker punched or just shoved for the heck of it do you know what I am telling him or her?  I am going to say, "Dad don't ever want you to start something but if someone starts it with you, you better finish it."   Now there is a time and place for that. You do not want to be selfish and hurt your team or hurt someone intentionally.  But by the same token, if some punk is starting up something with my kid, my kid better not take it.

Please do not look into reproducing...

Radford isn’t what I would call a  real physical squad either. But they are physically tough enough.

As long as Cormany is Radford’s coach they will be extremely physical. If you read  quotes from his players they constantly say games are much easier than their practices because of the level of physicality in which he demands.

Just curios as VHSL state championships are just a month or so away... who are the top 1A and 2A boys and girls teams the West needs to watch out for?

Radford is on a different level than any other 2A school. They just beat an undefeated 3A Northside. Two D1 players with possibly the best coach in VA will be tough to handle.

To me, the coach of the year award should go to the coach who does things that aren't expected... Last year, Mullins took a last place predicted team in the M7 and finished 2nd with it.  This year, the article linked above explains itself.

I agree that Amburgey did a good job considering the timing of when he got hired. My argument against him winning the award would be he finished first in a 2A district with a 3A school and then got blown out in a 2nd round regional matchup. Winning the Mountain District is great but I don't think many people had picked Graham to win a state title before the season began which is more impressive.

If football going to improve then houseright has to get out of girls b-ball.  There too much to do right now to get ready for August.  I hope this is his last year doing that.  Reed is not going to be the same Reed we all know and love. I believe he disappointed he did not get head coach.  His heart won’t be all the way in it. Still see some rough years to come.

Couldn't agree more. Houseright needs to be in the weight room overseeing all aspects of his program and not leaving that job to assistant coaches. I would understand coaching track in the spring because several of his football players would be participating and it doesn't require as much time to coach but girl's basketball doesn't make sense.

Easy explanation. Boy's basketball in Wise County is bad (last team to win state? 1974 Powell Valley Vikings)

Disagree. J.I. Burton, J.J. Kelly, Powell Valley, and Pound have all had their good seasons in basketball over the years. Eastside is still a very successful program.

I really think you’re underselling Pulisic. He’s 20. He’s not even close to his prime and he’s already a household name around the world.

He’s going to sell more jerseys for Chelsea than anyone not named Hazard.

They knew what they were doing.

Thousands and thousands of kids today will grow up wearing a Pulisic Chelsea jersey and that will help pave the way for the next generation of interest and superstars.

I’m not underselling him. A majority of Premiere League followers would agree paying $70 million for a player who didn’t even start in the Bundesliga is way too much. Selling jerseys to Americans is great but that doesn’t make him a success in Europe. There is a stigma that Americans are overrated so I hope Pulisic does well but there will be a lot of pressure on him due to the significant wages Chelsea has committed to him as well as a target on his back from opposing teams.

This past summer I was very confident that Pulisic would be coming to Anfield.  Although I'll admit to being disappointed -- particularly knowing that the Reds will have to see him twice a year in Chelsea blues -- Shaqiri has proven to be a great (and economical) addition to the lineup and we may have the opportunity to duplicate that somewhat with Fekir.

Timing of the announcement coupled with loss to City also makes for a bad couple of days.  Still cautiously optimistic that this is our year, but I do think the EPL race will ultimately be tight down the stretch.  If Liverpool stumbles against the bottom of the table (as the Reds have been prone to do) the next few weeks, that would certainly make things a lot more interesting overall.

That said, I agree completely that this is a great thing overall for American soccer and I'm glad to see Pulisic receive this kind of personal recognition and reward.

Don't be too disappointed. Chelsea overpaid by a lot and he wouldn't crack the top 5 for Liverpool with Mane, Salah, Fimino,  Shaq, and Sturridge. I'm not sure that Pulisic will get that much playing time at Chelsea in the first 2 to 3 years of his contract unless Hazard makes the move to Spain or Italy.

It is a plus for the USMNT but unless the head coach moves away from favoring MLS players they will continue to struggle.

If I were coaching, I would put my best individual defender on Dean, and trap Ervin every single possession, multiple times per possession.  Make Ervin see that trap in his dreams, and make Dean beat your #1 defender to get his.  Easier said than done, especially in a system built ok help defense, but a team that executed on defense like this consistently during the course of a game will defeat Gate City.

And If I were coaching Gate City I'd run Dean off a million screens to get really good looks since he's being guarded by 1 person. If he misses I've got 3 players rebounding against 2.

What happened? Did VHS lose a lot to graduation? They were competitive with the best of the M7 last year.

They are basically the same team as last year. I wouldn't say they were competitive with the M7 last year. Battle and Abingdon swept them last season. Union came close to knocking them off in the first round of regional play even though VA High was a 1 seed. They went on to upset Ridgeview and then lost to Central. The Bearcats live and die by the three. If they go cold they are capable of losing to any team.

There's no hope for Richlands to sniff within 40 points of Graham if they can't beat a team that lost to Northwood.

The SWD girls is Virginia High and Lebanon.  Everyone else is playing for third.

SWD girl's side is way down compared to the Mountain. If VA High played in the Mountain they could struggle to finish in the top 4.
