I refuse to believe that one year of good coaching and playing against better competition (deep playoff competition) really improves a players stock. I just don't see it. If you're a stud then you're a stud, plain and simple.

I completely understand moving to a school with a better program, but it needs to be done before high school. Once you make a commitment, own it.

    That would be turrible...

You are already taking away all identity and character buy naming a school "directional whatever".  With consolidation, the schools will lose their towns identity anyway, at least give them a name to be proud of, one they can identify with.

I've always thought Bluestone River High and Clinch River High would be nice...any and all nicknames would be up for debate.

Although, the Pounding Mill Quarriers and the Bailey Switch Railroaders wouldn't be too bad...

The central VA County schools that you mention; Nelson, Amherst, Appomattox, Buckingham, Orange, Louisa, Amelia, Madison, Floyd, Franklin and I'll throw in William Monroe (Greene County) and Culpeper were consolidated right after WWII from small k-12 schools in one building. It wasn't due to dwindling enrollment it was to offer the full high school experience to students at the small rural schools in those counties. Comparing them to the situation in SW VA right now is apples to oranges.

The Cumberland and Black Diamond just need to merge and be done with it. The combined district would have Burton, Castlewood, Eastside, Rye Cove, Twin Springs, Thomas Walker, Grundy, Honaker, Hurley and Twin Valley. A perfect ten team district with competitive balance. Call it the Cumberdiamond District. nine district games and one non-district.

Don't feel sorry for Hurley because the bad attitudes are going to Richlands. The other 30 kids that are returning next season won't miss the BS.

Where did all the Workmans go?   Seems like Hurley always had a big Workman kid or two on the line back in the day.

My $.02 worth.....I used to let the Richlands transfer thing bother me. Then Abingdon beat them and my son graduated...now I don't care.

Look, if kids want to transfer anywhere, it's because the team is well coached and has a winning tradition. They wouldn't have that winning tradition if not for good coaching. Mance didn't start coaching at Richlands and suddenly 7 kids transferred in his first year. The man can coach, the team starts winning a lot, kids want to go there.

What I find silly is that people put so much into winning a high school championship. That life is over at 18 or 22 if you play college ball. What percentage of kids that play high school football actually play college ball...with a full ride? Very very low percentage. How about we raise kids with morals, determination to work hard at what ever you do, raise a God fearing family, and leave the world a better place while you're here. Trust me, I know the value in being part of a winning team, but there's also a ton of value in just being a teammate.

Transfer shmansfer......just be a kid while you can because once the bills start coming in the collector doesn't care if you played for Richlands or Mother Mary's school for the Blind and Limbless.

The more you know....(now back to your regularly scheduled program)

First of all I am Big Blue Tornado fan. I have supported the team when they were 0-10 and when they were 10-0. No matter the record I give 100% support to the team because they give 100% on the field and during the hot days of practice. I have looked at some of the posts people are placing on here and some of them are way off base. Showing disrespect for other schools and their teams is just wrong.

With that being said I want to share my feelings. Over the past 30 years I have missed only 19 Blue Tornado games with 8 of those coming in 2006. At the start of that season I was diagnosed with cancer and missed the first 8 games due to cancer treatments. Missing those 8 games was harder then dealing with the cancer. However, I was able to attend the last two regular season games and playoff games. I enjoyed those games more then any before and I realized that supporting those kids each Friday gave me something to look forward to, and I believe it was a major help to me in dealing with the cancer.

I know some may look at this topic and think I am stupid for my views but hey that's their opinion. However, I am an adult so others opinions about me doesn't matter. What does matter is how they represent their school and community. Way too many posts are centered around bashing other schools, communities, and shamefully some of the kids that play for those schools. That type of communication is not warranted. Just think of the kids that might visit this site and read the things that are posted. They will see the disrespect shown for others and think its okay for them to do the same.

I am sure people will disagree with me and that is their right. What I am trying to impress on those that use this site is this. We are all football fans. We all support our local school and community. It does not matter if we are from Richlands, Grundy, Hurley, Giles, Union or any of the other area teams in SWVA. We all need to respect each other and support all our boys when playoff season arrives. We may be rivals when we play but we should all be brothers and support the teams that make a run even if its not our boys doing so.

I apologize if this offends some readers, I had to post my feelings because of all the disrespect shown to others because how we treat others will be the way our youth learns to treat others.

WE ALL NEED TO REMEMBER THAT ITS NOT ABOUT US. ITS ABOUT ALL OUR BOYS FROM THIS AREA NO MATTER WHERE THEY ARE FROM AND NO MATTER IF THEY GO 0-10 OR GO UNDEFEATED. GIVING THEM 100% SUPPORT SHOULD BE OUR ONLY GOAL.

Thank you for the time you took to read my rant.

Perkins didn't show up until 1987 or so...he was a year behind me, grew up playing football with him and JK from 4th grade on...his dad was one of our coaches. Rough bunch though from 1980-1986 in Grundy, they didn't have the best record or even a lot of Wins to show for it, but the kids loved to hit...pretty much all of the schools back then were like that. People really don't know unless you played during that time or coached or went to the games just how violent it was...we all beat the living hell out of each other, literally. It was just a different time and a different game.

We were not allowed to hang out on the fence and talk to cheerleaders or people in the crowd, couldn't take your helmet off, water was a reward especially during two-a-days when it was 100+ degrees in the cow pasture we practiced in, most of practice was spent hitting each other not running plays, Monday = gut check, not everyone dressed out on Friday night even the good kids had to earn their jersey each week, if you missed a practice for any reason you didn't dress out that week, you didn't talk back to your coaches you just did what you were told and if you did it wrong god have mercy on your soul, weight room was not in any way an optional place to hang out when you felt like it, if you didn't win the long bus ride home was silent and you could hear a pin drop...things were just different than they are now.

Mr. Supposedly Smartest Person on the Board Wahoo by his adoring GMen fan boys, (lmao) I have basically come to the conclusion that sarcasm is a thing that is useless with the intellect of the vast majority on this board because I assure that I know that it is technically called hand-foot-and-mouth disease if I had intended it to be foot-and-mouth disease. However, I did not intend to say it foot-and-mouth disease. I intended it exactly as I typed it to be sarcastic. I hope that you have heard of the saying, "You put your foot in your mouth" and know what the meaning of that idiom means without me having to explain it to you. I used a variation of that idiom, but I know it is useless to try to explain it to you. Please reply back, so your adoring GMen fan boys can hit the "like this" button to sniff your jock.

I posed this question on Twitter on Saturday and didn't get much of a response, so...

Why doesn't Virginia play all six title games at one location like Tennessee and Kentucky?  The reason I ask this is because, no disrespect intended to Blue Tornado nation, but both games in Salem Saturday will in all likelihood be decided before halftime, which makes the decision for me to go a struggle.  Especially with the forecast giving a high of 32 for Saturday at last check.

I would love the opportunity to see 3A-6A title games one day... 3A and 4A was going to be my option this year before the VHSL became all liberal and moved the games from Lynchburg.  5A and 6A are no longer in Charlottesville either.  I would be very willing to travel, even if it meant to the tidewater region, if all six games were in one location over two days like Tennessee and Kentucky.

Hazard lost 21-14 to Beechwood in the title game. Alot of talent in that corner of Pike Co. and Mingo Co. Belfry and Mingo Central is probably a 30 to 40 minute drive from one another and they have two state titles this year

Personally I see nothing but benefits for the levels under Middle School. At that age all they need to be doing is learning to block and tackle, plus learning some ball skills. The key is they have to be on the field to learn, 8 man means 1 team becomes 2 and instead of playing 11 kids you're playing 16. It's an idea I never would have thought of but I really like it.
