SWVAgridiron Posted August 22, 2016 Report Posted August 22, 2016 It seems that the Spartans will be facing off against a much improved Blacksburg team and one of the fastest running backs in Virginia, Cole Beck. After watching Giles against Bluefield, I'd say that they can't let Beck on the outside as that was their weak point. Offensively, the Spartans just need to do what they do best, ground and pound. I'm going with Giles 28-20 Quote
nrv_football Posted August 22, 2016 Report Posted August 22, 2016 If Blacksburg is really going to be kicking onside and not punting it will be a disaster against Giles. Giving Giles a short field would be a very bad idea. I'll take Giles in this one. Quote

SWVAgridiron Posted August 22, 2016 Author Report Posted August 22, 2016 It seems like what their coach is saying is that they have a very weak defense so he just wants to keep the O on the field. He also could just be playing mind games. Quote
nrv_football Posted August 22, 2016 Report Posted August 22, 2016 The idea of potentially giving any team a short field is ridiculous. Then again it worked well for Glenvar against Giles seeing as they recovered the onside kick several times. Quote

Falcon Mania Posted August 23, 2016 Report Posted August 23, 2016  http://www.businessinsider.com/why-you-should-never-punt-2013-11 If its such a great concept why is it not a single college or pro team institutes it. With the logic in that article mid major non-power 5 schools should implement this immediately and win the national championship year in and year out. Each to his own I guess. I'll take my chances with field position. SWVAgridiron Posted August 23, 2016 Author Report Posted August 23, 2016 If you have a powerhouse team then that might work out, but Blacksburg is far from that. Perhaps he should've tried that at Richlands Quote
Chappy Posted August 23, 2016 Report Posted August 23, 2016 It could be that they don't have much in the kicking department, it could be fear of long returns resulting in the same field position given up on an onsides attempt or scores. Â Northwood has done something like this on kick-offs for years, they will either attempt the onside or they pooch kick it towards the sideline, in this case they have a good shot at getting to the ball first or they have people there to cover the returner as soon as he touched the ball, or if it goes out of bounds the ball is at the 35 anyway. (they've have not had a kicker that could put it in the end-zone or help keep the other team behind the 20 in 10+ years) Quote
Account Deleted Posted August 23, 2016 Report Posted August 23, 2016 I don't recall who it was but someone used this game plan against Galax a few years ago. Â Went for every 4th down, regardless of field position or distance as well as every kickoff being of the "on-sides" variety. Â Galax set a school record for scoring and, if memory serves, knelt the 4th quarter away. Â This occurred shortly after the ESPN story about the coach in Arkansas who has employed this concept with great success. Â Â My take-a-way was/is, as with any system, personnel matters! Single A west Posted August 25, 2016 Report Posted August 25, 2016 hey sixcat didn't know if you remember I think it was in 2001 when galax with brown at rb went to bland and bland I think kicked 6 and recovered 4, winning 30ish to 12. Reavis coaching bland and Gillespie at galax. What your prediction for this years Galax team? Quote

Reavis coaching bland and Gillespie at galax. What your prediction for this years Galax team? Tough to predict right now. Several starters are suspended and facing possible criminal charges including the QB. The team spent yesterday being questioned by police rather than on the practice field. Â If the line progresses as it did last year, anyone can turn and hand off to Dougie Peoples and Blake Brown. Both had huge nights against Carroll last week. Dougie had 290 yards and Brown had 130 and 5 TD's. But it all starts with the line. Â We will see who, if anyone, is ultimately punished. Quote

If he had been able to play for Mark Dixon, he might have broken 4000 yards as a senior. He was a man amoung boys. Quote
EH31 Posted August 25, 2016 Report Posted August 25, 2016 Sixcat, off topic, but how do you think Audrey(sp) Sams would rank up against Galax's backs from the last couple of years? I remember playing against him and he seemed so fast. I can't remember if he was that good or we were that bad lol Quote

I remember playing against him and he seemed so fast. I can't remember if he was that good or we were that bad lol Aundrey was another one of those "special" talents that Galax has seemingly had for decades.  I believe the 2007 team would have competed for a state championship if they had Dixon coaching.  Sams wasn't to the level of Brandon Brown or Steven Peoples but that isn't anything to be ashamed of.  In my opinion, Brandon Brown could be playing on Sunday's right now if he had been given an opportunity by a D1 program.  6'-2" tall and over 200 pounds, he never looked like he was running hard nor fast but never got caught from behind and his strides were damn near 5 yards wide.  Reminded me of watching Eric Dickerson.  His 2001 team was excellent as well and would have benefited greatly from Dixon but the off-field issues may have been too much for them to overcome.  That team had a starter murdered during the season.  I believe Aundrey could have been a quality player at Union University but, for whatever reason, he didn't stay and returned home after a season.  Galax has had no less than half-a-dozen, maybe more, players receive D1 attention since that 2001 team.  Not bad for a nonexistent football program prior to Mark Dixon's arrival. EH31 and Mountain Football 2 Quote

tbgfan Posted August 25, 2016 Report Posted August 25, 2016 Should be a good gauge for both programs as to what kind of season they may have.   Coach Wells is a innovator that's for sure (when he was OC for the Blues all of those colorful signs and characters portrayed on the playcalling cards,  definitely an indication of his forward thinking.) Now the storyline of rarely punting and onside kicks, he doesn't let the mundane be the repertoire  for his coaching.  The Spartans are born and bred on the single-wing and even when the talent pool may not be as strong, it still can carry their program to a successful season. Of course, Coach Williams and staff have that innate ability to fill those holes where needed.  Going with the Spartans for the win. Seasoned coaching, a storied program give them the edge. SWVAgridiron Posted August 26, 2016 Author Report Posted August 26, 2016 Was able to watch these 2 teams battle it out on jv tonight. Blacksburg didn't hold back with their onside kicks, and it did work once. They also went no huddle the whole game and wore the Spartans out. Excited for Varsity! Quote
