  1. Once the TCSB closed Pocy (RIP) , further consolidation just didn't make sense in Tazewell County. That was 2008 and nothing has changed significantly to this day. There remains three distinct population centers spread fairly evenly being served by three high schools along the primary corridor. Like the rest of SWVA, I'd expect to see a continual decline in the overall county population but nothing to warrant consolidation in the foreseeable future.
  2. Black Diamond HS Elk/Thundering Herd or Miners Black/Silver or Black/Gold
  3. So I read the $235.6 million was to actually replace Hurley High and also either replace or flood-proof the Buchanan Career and Technology Center (The new high school could be in Hurley or an alternate location) To the residents of Hurley, Congratulations, you're getting a brand new high school! And the best part, it's only 25 miles and 43 minutes away from your current school. Sincerely, Your neighbors in Grundy
  4. I'm seeing a place named Poplar Gap Park, a county park that was built in 2001 on a former strip mining site. The park appears to contain ballfields (football, baseball, softball) along with a fairgrounds area. Is this the proposed location? @olewave mentioned Corps of Engineers funding. Is Buchanan in-line for COE funding similar to DIckenson Co. when they built Ridgeview? If so, it's a no-brainer. It's akin to your school system winning the Powerball.
  5. This was a meme Trump tweeted just after the impeachment vote. I'm not a fan of all his Twitter activity, but this response was absolutely genius. This is Madison Ave. level brilliance. Simple yet profound. Trump doesn't have to spend millions to re-energize his base for 2020. The Democrats are doing it for free.
  6. I wish more HS football players wrestled. I don't think many players or coaches fully appreciate the benefits. I would dare say much of Spurlin's football success ties back to things learned on the mat from his dad. https://www.teamusa.org/USA-Wrestling/Features/2016/July/21/How-Wrestling-Builds-Better-Football-Players
  7. This is game is a blast...unless you're from Galax or Riverheads
  8. Dixon clearly made some adjustments at half. Roll Tide!
  9. I hope I'm wrong, but I fear consolidation will doom the chances of any SW Virginia school from matching or surpassing Powell Valley's eight titles.
  10. I think I read about this place somewhere.
  11. I'd like to go with Wise Central, but apparently Luke Owens is not that good of a coach.
  12. Patrick Henry will feel like they're playing against the entire Galaxy.
  13. I found nothing specific requiring accessible seating on both the home and visitors sides. The links below address the percentage of accessible seating in relation to overall capacity. It could come down to a local building officials' determination if the stadium is compliant. VHSL has broad power and could order a venue change if it didn't deem a facility suitable. This relocation could occur even if a facility had been determined to have met the minimum ADA requirement. IIRC, the DOJ is the top enforcement agency pertaining to ADA by working complaints through the court system. Smyth Co Schools made a number of needed upgrades as a result of a suit. https://aluminumbleachers.com/aluminum-bleachers-ada-compliance-issues-need-addressed/ https://aluminumbleachers.com/ada-bleachers-wheelchair-access-disabilities/
  14. What do Polar Bears and Gladiators have in common? They're both bad at math.
  15. Left: 1971-1981 Long Neck Fighting Gobbler (donned by Lee Corso during Gameday's first visit to Blacksburg) Middle: '82-'86 Short Neck Replacement and first Hokie Bird (The brave 1984 field goal post defender) Right: '87-present Redesigned Hokie Bird Coach Bill Dooley disliked many things about VA Tech and implemented sweeping changes to rebrand the program through elimination of: the 7 1/2 foot mascot, team use of the VPI initials, the Fighting Gobblers name and logo, The old school TV helmet logo, Burnt Orange on Unis, and the lighted Gobbler and gobbling scoreboard. Dooley won at Tech but also got the school placed on probation during Beamer's early years.
  16. 1 Riverheads (pulling for Galax) 2 Graham (pulling for Graham) 3 Hopewell (pulling for Lord Botetourt) 4 Broad Run (pulling for Salem...sorry...is that an automatic hammer?) 5 Manchester (pulling for Varina just because they beat 4X champ Highland Springs) 6 Westfield (pulling against Oscar Smith)
  17. I didn't know until today that Fuente had been pursuing Kill before the season began. Below is excerpt from a Gobbler Country article by Bryan D. Manning on 09-16-19. "According to Fuente, he invited Kill to fall camp in August and asked him to give his honest assessment of the program. They talked about a role then but apparently the role and money had to be approved until he could join the Hokies in an official capacity. Fans should not pay attention to the timing. This has been in the works since before the season. This has nothing to do with Fuente’s job security or Bud Foster’s impending retirement. All in all, this is a smart move by Fuente. Kill will not be able to work with the players but he can travel to games, watch practice, etc. He can be a good sounding board for Fuente as he tries to get the Hokies turned around. Kill could also help Fuente in finding Foster’s replacement for next year, which will be a make-or-break hire for Fuente." https://www.gobblercountry.com/2019/9/16/20869750/virginia-tech-football-hokies-add-former-minnesota-coach-jerry-kill-to-staff
  18. It was 371 days where the Hokies lost who they were. From last years' ODU debacle until this season's blowout to Duke, the future looked quite grim. This period witnessed nines losses, team infighting, a bowl loss, the first losing season since 1991, mass exodus through the portal, and calls for Fuente's job. Since then, the team responded by reeling off six wins over two ranked opponents, took a taleted Irish team to the brink in South Bend, kept the bowl steak alive, regained a national ranking, pitched back-to back conference shutouts, and quieted the Fuente critics. Things can turn south quickly at Scott on Friday, but credit Fuente, Foster & Co for a remarkable turnaround.
  19. I'd concur with Luke Owens as COY. In August, the Warriors looked to be no better than an M-7 also-ran.
  20. Some people do give Tony Palmer the credit he deserves. It's the ones who recall the lost decade of Graham football before he was hired as HC. Unfortunately, there are others who think Palmer is simply the beneficiary of a run of great athletes. That was what I meant when I said he was "underrated".
  21. Tony Palmer may be one of the most underrated coaches in Virginia.
  22. I don’t know about the coalfields, but we do it the RIGHT WAY here in Smyth County. Once a field is selected, fans will complain incessantly on Facebook and implore local media to escalate the situation. At that point, a hometown “hero” will write to our local State Senator requesting him to intervene. The Senator then contacts VHSL Administrators who in turn select a more “suitable” field.
  23. The OP just got "walloped" with words by @graham32
