Just watch hockey, which, quite honestly, is a better sport than most other options.  Just as physical as football, hand-eye coordination of baseball and soccer.  Much faster pace.  Waaaaayyyy less arrogance and entitled attitudes.
My family has a lot of midwestern roots.  I played on a street hockey league in Texas for a couple of years while I was in the Army stationed at Fort Hood......a whole new level of being in shape....and I was a plodding defensemen with average change of direction for that league.  Those forwards are world class athletes.
I remember the other defensemen I played with was a tanker and had a glass eye.  He would smack dudes in the boards and was always checking with me to make sure his eye didn't come out.  Lol.  Good times!

According to the article he had only been teaching and coach one year at wise and maybe one year overall I don’t think he was a coordinator I could be wrong.

Nothing against the guy I hope he does well but it looks like they had to promote from within because there wasn’t any teaching job open. That usually makes it tough on a school to hire when the head coach steps down but is still teaching. If you are gonna have a multi state search you gotta have a teaching job open

My thoughts are they don’t have a teacher position for there guy because they won’t move any of the old guys…. So they are having to circle the wagons to keep everyone happy

Soccer also cannibalizes track athletes as well.  Having four spring sports (three bigger ones) is a bit much for the boys side.  Moving soccer to the fall makes a lot of sense as football is the only major sports (for boys).  Having baseball, soccer, track and tennis in one season is a bit much, especially when you only have football, golf and cross country in the fall.

As long as soccer, golf and tennis exist, baseball is in no danger of being the most boring sport.  And, yes, it can be boring, especially if the teams aren't good.

I don’t know the specifics, but reclassification really makes Princeton an attractive destination. Now, it becomes significantly easier to win a state title at Princeton than even Graham.
Under the new realignment, Princeton becomes the 5th largest of 30 schools to compete for a state title. Graham is one of the smallest schools out of nearly 50 to win a title in Virginia.
Graham has likely benefited from their neighbors’ misfortunes, partly due to Princeton’s enrollment and lack of success. Princeton has recently enjoyed an impressive record in recent years, but just couldn’t overcome much larger schools. Now, Princeton is sort of a big fish in a small pond now with some good talent to draw in the greater Mercer/McDowell/Tazewell County areas.
See the Honaker location in another thread for a good comparison.
Richlands and Lebanon misfortune (both record and Lebanon’s move up in classification) helps contribute to this other group of Tigers success in Class 1.

There is a homeschool girls basketball program locally called State Line Rush. They have sent a girl or two to college to play basketball every single year for over a decade. Not hard to see why Galax and Grayson County High Schools have seen a sharp decline in girls basketball talent in that timeframe. They fundraise like crazy and play all over the eastern seaboard. Probably play 50 games a year. Of the former SLR players that I know, one starts at George Washington currently, one starts at UT Chattanooga currently, and one started 77 games at Liberty between 2019-2023.

That is where I see youth athletics in the future. What State Line Rush is doing will be the rule rather than the exception.
Edit to add: That 2018 NACA National Championship SLR won (on Facebook link) was with an extraordinary team. All three D1 players mentioned above plus three girls that played D2 basketball in South Carolina and another that played D2 basketball at Lee University. One of the D2 girls was an All-America selection.

Good choice.  Central Location and also, it is sometimes NOT always about the kids.  Sure, the game should be mostly about the kids, but......parents, fans, alums, administrators put in whole lot of work to make things happen as well and these people drive to the game, pay the hotel bill, pay the boosters, etc.  I'm certain the overwhelming majority of kids in WV would want to play at WVU, but again, in some instances, it's not just all about the kids and when money, finances, travel, support, planning, logistics come into play, it absolutely starts to bring those that are not kids into play.

The pendulum swings too far both ways.  I would not want to go back to the 70's type coaching.  To be brutally honest, a lot of damn good kids were "run" off for a myriad of bad reasons.  Looking back at that era, it was complete inflexibility and kids had no options.  Now, the kids have too much influence and coaches are too beholden to the parents in a hope of retaining talent.
Be consistent, fair and coach up and develop your kids.  Some will leave, it happens.  Stay the course. If this guy was hired simply because a kid liked him, it will work itself out.

well in the past there wasn't an open transfer portal like they are today.  lots of parents out there today believe their kid is going to be that D1 superstar when in reality its prob more like 1 in 5,000 in SWVA.

I think my original post might be getting misunderstood somewhat. I'll attempt to clarify in simpler terms.
Would coaches of past generations (70's, 80's, 90's) have been interviewed for open coaching positions based on what a 16 year old kid and his father wanted?
I think administrators back then would have told the kid and his dad to piss off.

I'm thinking they'll announce assistants next month after the next school board meeting.  Several new staff with a few holdovers...well, counting HC as "new" since he is new to that role.
