This post is in regards to the "Claiming state titles" before 1970 remark while referring to Narrows.
In the 1920's and 1930's there were three classes in Virginia.  A, B, C.  The only class that had an organized system for a state champion was the A class which was the biggest schools. The VHSL record book lists those. In 1954 the "A" class greatly expanded as a lot of the B Class teams joined A. The future SW District teams of Graham, Tazewell, Richlands, Grundy and Va High joined class A.  Covington was another team that joined class A. Class A rules stated that you must play a certain number of games vs other class A schools so SW schools started playing the Roanoke area Class A schools such as Fleming, Patrick Henry Roanoke and Jefferson.  Grundy was even playing E. C. Glass in the 1960's. The schools from Roanoke were happy because they no longer had to travel to Richmond, Tidewater and NOVA to get class A games.
But in the 1920's and 1930's the smaller classes would play regional and state class playoff games if both champions could work it out.  There was no requirement to play these games. They were optional and many times schools declined. In 1939 Narrows was champions of their district and Bedford champion of their District.  They played a playoff game and Narrows won.  The Class C team from the Eastern Shore declined to travel to Narrows to play so Narrows claims a championship. In 1938 all the Class C teams declined to play so again Narrows claims a championship. There were very few years that these games went the full playoff rounds.
    Other examples:
1928  Big Stone Gap defeated Christiansburg and South Boston in Class B playoff games. Could probably claim a state championship
1929  Big Stone Gap tied Saltville in a class B playoff game and advanced on a coin flip and then tied Washington - Lee from Arlington.  Washington - Lee traveled all the way to Big Stone Gap in 1929.
There are lots of these games I have found but since I am still working on many Eastern class B and C teams I don't have a clear picture of what all went on.

Powell Valley had 5 sub .500 regular seasons in the history of the school.  4 of those came prior to 1970.  The last one came in 1977.  On the other hand, since 1970, Graham has had 11 sub .500 regular seasons..with 5 of those since the year 2000.  PV also leads Graham in 7 win seasons since 1970 29-25.  So, that justification can be thrown right out the window.  (BTW Gate City has had 7 sub .500 seasons...3 of those were prior to 1962, and the last 4 have all occurred after 1997.).

The brakes need pumped big time wrt/ Narrows.   I've seen several posters on multiple boards have them in top 10's and a couple top 5's.   Let's see what they do against Giles.  That's the only true barometer this team faces before getting into district play.  Honestly, I think they have the potential to be better than last year on D just due to the strength and size on the line.  Offensively, tighten up on the ball security and become a little more balanced and they're on to something.   Still thinking 8-2 or 7-3 at the end of the season.  We will see.

Can we please not bring politics to this forum.  Lets talk football.  I've only been waiting 8 months to get back to talking football and it's much needed relief.

It depends on what machinery you use to attack the fort.  I'd recommend a few good siege engines, perhaps some catapults with cavalry backups.

I hope it's a good and even game as it was last year.  Interested to see how the new QB does for them.  They have the majority of the linemen back and have some size.  Just hope Blaker and Evans aren't missed too much on offense.  If they come out and play with the fire they did in Norton, they should be fine.  As far as the new district goes,  I'm thinking they're competing for 2nd with Covington with PM being the horse out front.  Should be interesting to see how they fit into the new district.

I disagree on two counts.  I could write a thesis on this, but I'll just briefly summarize it here.

One, it's a fiscally disastrous proposition.  Without changing the whole municipal paradigm, one district will be "dominant" and one will be "servient".  In the above example, Russell would be dominant and Tazewell would be servient.  Tazewell would lose the students and therefore the considerable state funding that goes along with them.  Tazewell would be left with buildings where the electricity would need to be paid; the water and sewer would need to be tended; and the grounds would need to be landscaped.  Russell would receive the students (and that money), but would have to construct a massive new school complex (think 8-figure cost); this has left Dickenson County in a huge financial lurch.  Russell would also have to send buses deep into Tazewell County, buses which get 6 MPG at $2.54/gallon for diesel.

Two, while feasible, there would be considerable bureaucracy in consolidating school districts between counties/cities.  It's more than just the public hearings, the public anger, and the funding conundrum: it's administrative red tape even when that's approved.

The General Assembly would need to change its entire municipal paradigm to the northern model of Borough/Township to accomplish this task on a statewide level, and that's almost certainly an 11-figure price tag.  And having seen the independent school district setup for myself, it is massive and unwieldy.

This isn't going to happen, and it's for the best in multiple ways.

Cue my retort about it not being electronically timed or non-wind aided.  Cue a second retort about how VT-measured times are historically very suspect and inaccurate to the point where other ACC member institutions joke about their recruits' 4.4 time being a 3.9 time in Blacksburg.

Cue my disclaimer that this does not mean that both of these young men are not extremely fast human beings.  Cue my further explanation that both of these young men are exceptional athletes, in particular Beck, whose state championship sprints put him among the best high school sprinters in the history of the VHSL.

Nevertheless, cue my explanation that a legitimate 4.29 would put him sniffing a 10.00-flat in the 100m, which is world-class time, and would certainly all but end his football-playing days, as every major university and USTF would be beating his door down to come run 100m for them.

Cue my conclusion that it is more likely that Beck ran in accordance with his 10.41 100m mark set this year, which would put him in the high 4.3 range.  Cue my secondary conclusion that Cooke's likely time would be around the high 4.4 range if timed legitimately.  Cue my final sentence, where I would implore the reader to read my second paragraph several more times before throwing shade or accusing me of hating.

Big Creek's original field was neat. It was built on the front lawn on the school with bleachers on one sideline and the front steps to the school on the other sideline. There was also a huge green fence with an owl painted on it behind one of the goalposts to separate the field from the railroad tracks

    Not everything else.

VT's women's lacrosse hasn't ever beaten UVA, in 18 matches.  VT's men's tennis hasn't beaten UVA since before I went to college.  VT's women's basketball is 2-22 in its last 24 against UVA, including a 76-27 beatdown of a #19 VT in Blacksburg last year.  VT men's basketball is 3-11 against UVA in the Tony Bennett era.  Until Mark Bernadino's exit, neither of VT's swimming/diving programs were in the same universe as UVA's.  Neither VT golf program has been competitive with UVA this decade.  I'm not even counting baseball, where VT has outperformed itself in the rivalry but still falls well short of UVA (3-11 in the O'Connor era).

There's a whole bunch of lopsidedness in this rivalry, but it largely favors UVA.  The only two sports that really favor VT on a consistent basis are football and softball.  That's it.
