gc1 reacted to RiverRat24 in Congrats Jeremy Houseright
Congrats to Jeremy! Unless I misunderstood, Reed is to be the DC? Someone correct me on that if I'm wrong. Not sure about the rest of the staff. I think GC fans will be more patient in getting things turned around with Jeremy being the Coach. Its gonna take quite a few years IMO to get the program headed in the right direction, but there should be a noticable difference in a year or so. Not necessarily in just wins and losses, but fundamentals and also in the attitudes of the players. The kids will enjoy playing for Housey and he truly cares about the kids. It will be noticeable. There wont be a lack of enthusiasm from him that can be assured. I'm sure the folks at Rye Cove seen the same thing from him while he was there.

New Head Football Coach at Gate City HS. Congrats to Coach Houseright. Let’s get this bad boy rolling!

After his last 3 points he went out and didn't get back in until 2.5 seconds left in the game. That was a head scratcher to me but I'm not the coach. So far, the two biggest games for Georgetown are two of the best games he's had this season. That's a good sign for when they start playing conference games.

When you were watching the game was MAC actually guarding Clemons? I saw a guy post something on a Georgetown message board with his points broken down by who was guarding him. He scored 25 while Akinjo was on him. He scored 13 when Jagan was guarding him and 7 points in transition. None of his 45 points came while MAC was guarding him according to that poster. I didn't watch the game so I don't know. Looking at your posts, you insinuate that MAC was the primary defender and poking at the 6 points not being a good trade off to giving up 45 points.

The main defender on Clemons was Akinjo. I'm sure at times MAC guarded him but not most of the game. A lot of his points seemed late in the game when he was jacking up 3's and making them. If MAC was from Graham then the doubters would give him the time that's needed but since he's from GC they're already trying to say he can't hack it.

Just like last season at GC, he could not do enough to satisfy some. He is starting on a D1 team, that should shut some up, but it hasn't.

gc1 reacted to F@lcon in Akers Out at GC?
I think one of the biggest issues with the downturn of football at GC is the sensation of McClung and the rise in popularity of basketball in the youth. At the small school level you have a limited number of top athletes. When your better athletes focus on one sport then the other sports suffer. McClung, Ervin, etc decided to focus on basketball and it brought great support to that program. All the younger kids then start trying to be the next McClung instead of the next Houseright. If they try to do all sports they run the risk of major injury like McCamis at Wise. Plus, to perform at a level like McClung you have to devote to that sport year round. Nothing wrong with that, just an issue that most small schools face. That is why choosing the next coach is so important. Their biggest obstacle isn't going to be just getting what you have in the weight room. Success begins at the youth level. You have to create interest to get as many kids playing as possible so you can optimize your talent when they reach high school.

Graham Clark might be able to get the DB job back.

I'm not advocating for Coach Reed but I'm all ears on examples of what you're talking about. His last head coaching job took a team that was good for maybe 2-3 wins a season to a playoff team. Before that was at central and nothing else needs to be said about that because when have they ever been relevant in something other than girls basketball.

And because of this you will see football decline even more. Not just at GC or in SWVA. The risk of concussions and the media attention it has gotten are worrying parents, and rightly so. And football is pointed out as the culprit not the other sports.

The decline of GC football started way before Mac could slam a ball through a hoop. The decline started when Mac was still a 5’11 sophomore that was playing football. The problem isn’t that the talent has disappeared from GC. But that the talent is playing other sports. I do agree with that. Some kids on those basketball, soccer, and baseball teams could help the football team out. But they don’t want to play for the coach and focus on a single sport. The world of single sport athletes has taken over and swva as a whole is feeling that. Mac, Zac, Dean, and Compton (all 4 will be playing D1 basketball and baseball) would of helped on the football field. 10-15 years ago, those kids would’ve played football too. It’s just changed, a kid has a shot at a free education through their primary sport, hard to blame them for that.

I won't disagree that the talent is down. But, it's not 1-9 down. Plus, with better coaches, kids playing elsewhere or not at all could help immensely if they came back. GC football really isn't a quick fix right now. Going back into LL it may take a few years after a coaching change.

It's not basketball that's having a negative effect on the program. Several kids either not playing or transferred. The problem lies within the program at the top.

Something all too familiar from teams “up that way”. GC fans, students, and the team were so far into the Vaughan kid’s head it wasn’t funny. He went from dominating inside to playing with no composure after Mac blocked him the first time. He lost control and forced a lot and then started to try and rough us up, which he failed at. He still got his points but he lost his inside presence to a couple of Sophomores which I think frustrated him. Don’t think he was matched up with very much through the season. He then didn’t want to shake hands, especially with Mac, and threw his runner-up medal. And knowing the reasons why he doesn’t like Mac made it even more great, especially since the McClung family treated him well and helped him out. The rest of the team wasn’t as classless, they played hard and didn’t get dirty. Now the coaches are a different story and I can’t speak about the fans cause all I could hear were the GC faithful and Lee was snuggled into that one end so far I didn’t know they existed. I’m so happy for GCHS, Scotty, Seniors, and the team. First boys championship in a few years and we needed it with the turn of football going all to hell. Revenge was all too sweet.
Avenged 2013 loss to Radford.
Avenged 2018 loss to Graham.
Avenged 2017 loss to R.E. Lee.

As a GC alum, this was a long time coming in Boy's Basketball, and am proud of the way they played and represented Southwest Virginia. Their title in the 26th State Championship in school history and will soon have their fourth VHSL Hall of Famer when Coach Reed gets inducted, and don't sleep on the basketball team, I am not saying they will win State again, but they can get back there because Mac is all they are losing.

You could go on Preps and state the sky was blue but being from SWVA they would just say you don't know what a sky is.

I can’t. Mac shook Graham’s hands after the loss at Wise. No excuse for every player on your team shaking hands except for the star. You’re the star player. Be the example.

The Sallee kid deserves some love, he was outstanding tonight. Few buckets and great on the defensive end.
