Chronologically, those I could think of would be Graham 2001, Richlands 2005 and 2006 and 2010. Union or Richlands 2015. Even though only Richlands 2006 won state, all of the others compete well in my opinion. I would almost consider Gate City's 2010 team, but they were handled quite well by Richlands in my opinion. Of the Gate City teams, I was extremely impressed by the state championship team that beat Essex, but don't remember the year (03 or 04). If I'd have been more familiar with the Clintwood teams I might have included those.

Back in the 90s, it seemed like they all wore one. I'm pretty sure it was more of an effort to look bigger and more intimidating. Admittedly, it kind of worked. Not taking away from their weight training, because they were bigger than most teams,but I remember seeing some players after taking off their pads and thinking, "They're not that big." They all looked like monsters on the field.

For years, Raven was often rumored to be on the chopping block. I'd say the talk will start again as I hear that almost every other year. That seems like one of the toughest blows for a small community to deal with, but often necessary.

The beauty or problem is you never know about a bad game or matchup. If you have one, you hope it's in the regular season. Appomattox are deserving champions. My ignorance of Clarke County aside, they played well enough to reach the final. On any given day, Richlands, Union, or Glenvar could have beaten Appomattox as well or each other. Regardless, it was an exciting season.

No offense taken. My post was in agreement to yours and adding a little to it. The mentality is most important (I used commitment in my post), but the multiple ball carriers adds an element of complexity that is very tough to defend. It is not always necessary but helpful. In the spread offenses above, that extra ball carrier is the quarterback.

I second that idea. Best of both worlds.

How are both teams health wise? I know RV lost key contributors early, and I have read posts mentioning possible injuries to running backs on Friday. I seem too remember posts of a significant Giles injury in recent weeks as well, unless I am mistaken.

If my memory serves me correctly, we ran a version of the SW a few years ago in a week 1 win against Gate City when Devon Johnson was at Richlands. I also remember a couple packages similar to the single wing with Zeke Vance carrying the ball. While not the Giles unbalanced line single wing, he has used some of the elements. In some circles, many consider the single wing a precursor to the read option spread with the shotgun snap and dual threat qb. I'd say he has taken what he's been taught, and made it better and tailored to his personnel.

Thanks for the reply. I hope some stability continues to develop for those kids. As another poster said, there was a time Richlands had a losing mentality against Tazewell. When I was young, I remember 7 straight losses in the late 80s, early 90s. I for one, root for Tazewell to finish 9-1 every year.

1998. My senior season we won at Mitchell 41-6 or something similar. However, the past is the past, and Bluefield always scares me with their speed. I'm going Richlands by 10.
