  1. My assesment will be based on what I have witnessed from both teams. Graham has the size and ability to control the ball on offense and will need to do so to keep the ball away from Richlands' offense. Graham does not have the speed or athletes on defense to match up against Richlands' offense. If Graham attempts to cover RHS recievers with linebackers it will be a mismatch and will be exploited. And before those GMan faithful get redfaced about any of this let me explain that in the 2 games that have watched the kids have absolutely played to the highest level of their ability. They just have not matched up well against teams that have speed or the spread. Richlands will bring both to the table. IF Graham cannot pressure the QB I forsee a continous clock in the second half.
  2. There's more to Richlands and the staff than people voice. I have stated if before and will do so again. What seperates Richlands from most schools in the region is that Richlands has a football "program". The coach and staff recognize that to build a solid team you must take an active role at all levels. You dont see that at the other schools. I cannot quote exactly the statement made by RHS's coach but the jist of it was that "a win by the RHS Blue Tornados is a win for all kids that play football in Richlands. We are all Blue Tornados". The community has thrown full support into the football program at Richlands and we witness the result. That is the difference between a "good" coach and a "Great" coach.
  3. What people tend to forget about Compton is that in the NFL he was moved all over the place on the O-line and always produced results. There's no substance to saying he wasn't good while at RHS. Its true (and I witnessed it on occasions) that several d-lineman at the high school level gave Compton more than he could handle. But, most of those same "High School" linemens career stopped with high school graduation. Compton had the physical attributes, passion and drive to excel at the higher levels. He does have a great deal to learn as a coach but I'm confident that if he applies the same passion to his coaching carreer as he did to his playing career that he can be successful if not great.
  4. The kick met its intended purpose. It took all the wind out of the sails for Tazewell. You could watch the effects wash all over Wyatt and most of the players. Great call from a good coach. And I agree that after meeting (on the field) the RHS team and its coaches for a number of years that Tazewell's staff should have anticipated such a play call as well as the fake punt.
  5. Its definitley a 2 edged blade. But as mentioned in a previous post: Those big plants were the largest consumers for the power companies. What they loose in revenue from those plants they WILL try and get from us. My concern is that the new rates will not revert back when/if the economy recovers. We have been(and continue to be) the victims of similar issues with gas prices in relation to oil prices.
  6. Have heard that there are in fact confirmed cases of swine flu at Graham(dont remeber the school) and Richlands Middle. Spoke with my doc today and was told that the belief now is that most cases of the flu reported in our area may in fact be swine flu. Getting my toddler a flu shot in the morning and will have to wait a month for the child shot (or nasal vac.) for swine flu.
  7. Lowe is a big kid. Plays Defense at End and Tight End when they line up in a big package. Fairly quick for a big guy and was violent when he made contact. Hard to get a good read on him at the game against Bassett but shows promise to be a force on D.
  8. Another ignorant comment about recruiting. I have little doubt that the coaches in question pitched the benefits of attending said schools but the reality is simple. Kids from WV have choosen to attend Graham in the past because the were winning and had a great coach. Kids are flocking to Richlands now because they win ball games and they have a great coach. These 4 talented kids from BigCreek have made the best decision possible by choosing to play for a proven winner. And for the record, I support Tazewell High but still look forward to seeing how these guys develope in one of the true local school football SYSTEMS in this end of the state.
  9. Burkes Garden hosts its own highspeed internet now. Tannersville still has dialup only but that should be resolved within 2 years.
  10. To get a job, one must first be willing to work. To keep that job one must be willing to work. To feed self and family one must be willing to work jobs that may be less than desirable until something better is available. One of the glaring problems with American society today is the willingness of people to readily accept the government social programs as a means of support. A good portion of our society has sacrificed self esteem and pride for the easy handouts from a government that has morphed into this controlling entity. Do the elderly and disabled need to be tended to? Absolutely, but as mentioned before the problems with social programs are the greed and laziness that they promote. Far too many people have been willing to rape the system, thus retarding the ability for these programs to provide for those that are truly in need. Expanding these programs is a mistake. Policing them should be the focus. As for the Cambridge Officer and his "mistake". The officer in question acted in accordance with the law and his departments procedures. He responded to a B&E call, made contact with an individual claiming to reside there and simply asked for proof of identity. Any reasonable person would have complied. Instead you have a classic example of arrogance and "stupidity" from an extremely well educated scholar. If there is an example for racism or profiling in this situation I place it on Henry Louis Gates Jr. The officer did his job and Mr. Gates should have been elated that someone (white, black, red or green) was concerned about the integrity of his house. I for one take exception with the actions of our President concerning this entire matter. There are, without questions, issues within this country and abroad that cannot be trumped by the personal relations and feelings of the man that currently holds the highest elected office of our government.
  11. You know, I'm not sure of the reasoning behind this, but if the main concern of the Board was the SOL's then it has to be drawn down to the single issue of Accreditation. My limited knowledge on the SOL’s leads me to believe that they have little impact on the student until the junior or senior year. And lets chew on this thought for a moment: If a child has been home schooled for all of his/her primary years and the parents wish to enroll them in the public schools don’t they fall into the same area of “concern†for a lack of knowledge on SOL’s?
  12. Actually, Pocy had to "verbally" turn WV kids away during the last year or two if they were new enrollments. Those kids that were enrolled prior to that were allowed to continue.
  13. Not really a stretch if you find and understand the princible for his argument. Its not the need or use for an object that should be questioned but rather the right of choice. I can find no personal need to own a fully automatic weapon at this moment but certainly cherish the oppurtunity to choose to own one. Personally I belive that gun control, as most view, is a waste of intellectual process. There are obviuosly things in this country that need more attention than the constant stripping of choice from law abiding citizens. The ban on such weapons will most likely have little or no impact on the availability to such by those that would use them for unlawful actions. Therefore the focus should be averted to finding a standard method of punishment for those that use any firearm in the commision of of a crime.
  14. I think there's more to be consider here than just the preservation of our mountains. Tazewell County has, historically, not been a business friendly area. If plans were not driven by local motivation and/or local, old monies, then rarely were business ventures granted much support. By allowing the wind farm , we as a county may finally be shedding the old molding shawl of a retirement community. Perhaps as this economic shift (hopefully) runs it course, the willingness of the citizens in our region to explore other business ventures and embrace infrastructure investment will pay off with other less offensive industries having taken notice. Perhaps our area will become valued for its willingness to move into a new era of reconstruction. Wind farms are not efficient and not visually appealing, but they just may be the jolt that our area needs. If it means there may be a chance that our children can remain with in the region with the promise of a future, then I willing to plant a few "metal" oaks to see what will happen.
  15. ---"becomes too stupid and arrogant to admit he's wrong while continuing to run the country in the ground" Obama's got this one covered.
  16. Corner reacts well to the play. He does not have impressive 40 times but track speed and pad speed are a little different. Eugene can attest to that. He certainly was not going to win many sprints but he was generally in position to make plays on much faster players. Corner's gig is the same one he's had from his freshman year to date. Sometimes he drops his head and misses the tackle. If he plays every play with his eyes up and Tazewell finds quality replacements for interior linebackers(to pressure the middle) then he should have a good year on D. I'd try and work him in a little more on offense. He used to have good hands and with knowledgeable coaches to sharpen his routes he could prove to be an asset on both sides of the ball. Either way good luck to Corner and all area athletes on the upcoming season. Us old farts in the stands cant wait for opening day!
  17. Such a statement from someone who has voiced support Michael Moore's books and films. Come on General "Whats good for the Goose .......?"
  18. Found these interesting: Pros, cons of a college football playoff Why a college football needs a playoff • Brings college football into conformity with major sports. • Gives fans what they want. Surveys consistently show a solid majority for a playoff. • Ends the confounding, split-championship nonsense. There's one winner, period. • It's fairer than narrowing the national championship picture to a mere two teams and one game. • It's lucrative. The most recent playoff plan seriously shopped to major football-playing schools would have grossed nearly $376 million a year, more than double current bowl payouts. Why a college football playoff wouldn't work • Would gut, if not destroy, the traditional bowl system, which allows 56 teams — almost half those in NCAA Division I-A — to stamp their seasons a “success†by reaching the postseason. • Could diminish interest in the regular season. College football's is the most meaningful and drama-filled in sports. With no playoff and only two teams qualifying for a final shot at the national championship, there is so little margin for error that every game from late August to early December is vital. • The college game would become even more commercialized and professionalized. • A 16-team, four-round playoff would be during many final exams and extend the season into the second semester. Players would be harder-pressed to be students. The sad truth is that there were disputes when the National Champion was determined by the polls, now there are disputes about the computer weighting/rankings and the BCS, and a playoff in D-1 football will not remove these disputes. It will only "change†the arguments and extend them to later in a season that may be too long as is.
  19. Excellent observation. Notice that most of what you have pointed out can be coached or corrected. Not bagging that THS coaching staff at all, but at this level when you have someone with talent you tend to overlook some of the shortcomings. Muncy has all the attributes of a D-1 athlete decent size, decent speed and an understanding of the game etc. etc. The facts are he is not a D-1 prospect or a D-1 recruit he is as of now (barring any injuries or setbacks) a D-1 football athlete. I to have watched some tremedously talented football players from various schools in our area. All had some potential to play at the D-1 level. What has seperated those that did not make it from Muncy is the desire to acheive it. Muncy has attended many camps and OBVIOUSLY shown those that not only have an eye for talent, but whose sole job it is to search for and sign such talent, that he has the POTENTIAL to be a football player. Opinions are exactly opinions. Yours or mine have little meaning to others. But I find it difficult to disagree with those that should be the subject matter experts. HE IS, FOR REASONS THAT BAFFLE SOME A D-1 SCHOLARSHIP FOOTBALL ATHLETE.
  20. Most don't understand what the flag was for. All that most knew was what came across a hot mic from the official and that was that the dogs only had 10 on the field. While this is not an infraction the fact that Tazewell did not have enough on the line of scrimmage is a penalty. Sad that flag ended the game/season? No sir, simply sad that a game of this quality will only be remembered by a flag(the right call) that negated the first PAT. I wish that Tazewell would have won and moved on but it didn't happen. Richlands always has a chance to win this game. The defense will hit you and the offense is simple and effecient.
  21. One just needs to reflect back to last years match up. Brookeville brought a great team to Richlands last year(loaded witn athletes and size) and simply got pasted by a hard hitting defense. Richlands hasn't faced a team this year of Brookeville present caliber, but what you can rely on is that the blues will field a team prepared to execute an offensive strategy that builds on their strengths and a defense that be in your face all day. Richlands has a chance simply by having the oppurtunity. Wish them well.
  22. Check the ballots. BUSH IS NOT RUNNING. Uninformed statements?????????????????/
  23. This will not be a blowout. Lebanon has the skill and ability to play with Tazewell. Again the difference should be Tazewell's ability to play so many kids.
  24. Keep in mind that your opinion is based on the memories that you have of the game and the desire to never want it to end. I agree that kids should play for the simple reason of playing, but ,as posted earlier, kids have changed. Attitudes differ from 10 years ago(or longer). Perhaps in a few years the G-Men players now will have the same opinion as you. Coach Marrs (and his staff) know football, what he lacks is the ability to inspire kids. Kids feel defeated after the season that the G-Men have had. Expectations from the players and the coaches were higher. Kids responded to Coach Carlock's rants because he was highly respected (an understatement really). I assure you that they do not respond to Marrs'. He is in a difficult situation, butsome of it reflects his own attitude.
