The BE teams are sometimes better, but in terms of elite recruits and athletes, the ACC still reigns supreme. The Big East school with the most first round draft picks is St. Johns, and it's 17th, with seven ACC schools ahead of them.

True, but this is one of the many reasons why I dislike the NBA. NBA teams draft mainly on potential as opposed to the best college basketball players. The Big East has excellent basketball players who may not get the attention coming out of high school or go early in the NBA draft but they can play. I wouldn't bet against McClung to succeed at this point judging by what he has done so far. If averaged 15 a game in the Big East he will do it it any other conference.

I believe he will struggle in any major P5 conference because of the athletes available to guard him and then expose his defense on other end.

I disagree. The Big East can compete with the SEC & the ACC in basketball. Villanova, Seton Hall, Marquette, Butler, Creighton, and Xavier have competitive programs that regularly make the NCAA Tournament. Then you add in Georgetown's non con schedule where they played Duke, Texas, and Syracuse. I still think he will average double digits in scoring in the ACC or any other conference as long as he's healthy.

He did a fantastic job at Fort Chiswell cleaning up the dumpster-fire Tom Hale left behind.  I wasn't happy with the way he left but..........something about water and bridges!

Tiller finished with a 16-18 record and one playoff win. A losing record is a fantastic job?

So who gets the job next? Names front runners??

Great question. Who are the top 5 current coaches in SWVA? I'd have to go with 1)Turner (Union), 2) Wells (Richlands), 3)Owens (Wise), 4)Robinson (Chilhowie) and 5) Palmer (Graham). I'm probably leaving off some good ones but out of those five I don't see any of them leaving to coach at Patrick Henry. Probably going to have find a good coordinator or younger coach with less experience if you're PH.

IMO Bradley Dean from Gate City deserves at least a share of the Player Of The Year.  Any guy that can carry a team to another state championship appearance and go for 32 against the state champs need at least a share.

Where is Dean going to college? I haven't see anything in the paper about what schools are recruiting him.

Have you really missed sports! My short answer is No not really. I just want to hear everyone's answers!

Absolutely, especially the early spring window of the NCAA tourney, MLB opening day, the Masters and the English Premiere League. Once those are over I don't watch hardly any sports over the summer. Right now I would welcome just about any sport  to take my mind off the horrible stories related to the Coronavirus for a couple of hours.

how can someone cry and complain in national press about transfers and other basketball leagues when their own program has had transfers from local area next door to them for years and years and their own players have benefited from this same organization,  you got your tail spanked live with it,  single a didn't complain 20+ yrs ago when your double aa school dropped down so you could win state championships,  only problem is you got your tail handed to you then also  lol  what a joke

In no way am I a Gate City fan but what John Marshall did should make them ineligible to compete in the VHSL. An AAU coach should not be allowed to to lead that and a high school team in my opinion. It creates an unfair advantage by blatantly recruiting players to create a super team.

The girls should be as tough as ever imho.  GC only loses two contributors, mainly on the defensive side.  Ridgeview is Ridgeview. Central will be back and more experienced.  Union I’m not sure of.  I’m sure Abingdon will be tough.

The boys will be Union and GC I believe with Lee as a dark horse, I don’t know what all they lose.  Abingdon will be a solid team.  Graham will be better in the region as well.

Both sides of the Mountain will be top heavy. Boys should be Union, Abingdon, and Gate City. Girls should be Ridgeview, Gate City, and maybe Wise.

Great year GC should be proud. See ya again in the regions again next year.

Maybe. Union should be there. Gate City is going to drop off a little bit but outside of Abingdon most teams in the Mountain District will be losing some important pieces. Not sure what the Southwest will look like next season.

I played in the 90's.  It was a different game. The game is ridiculously physical now.

Completely disagree with this statement. Look at the offenses a majority of teams run today. Teams are spread out wide to create space for drives or three point shots if help comes to stop the drive. There may be a maximum of one ball screen set before a shot is attempted. In the 1980s & 1990s teams were running offenses that set a lot more screens which brought physicality to the game. There used to be post players who could bang in the paint and score with their back to the basket. In todays game posts are content to shoot threes and not go to work down low. Teams are much softer today.

VA, for its faults in the public school system, ranks considerably higher than TN. US News and World Report has VA #7th overall in public schooling whereas Tennessee was #35. WalletHub had VA in their top ten and World Population Review has Virginia at #7 overall and 8th in K-12 public schools. They had TN 38th in K-12 public schools. So, sending kids to Virginia for schooling seems like a smart idea.

Yes, but those rankings are high for VA mainly due to schools located in the NOVA area, not SWVA. The closest schools to SWVA that are ranked in the top 100 are in Blacksburg and Roanoke.

If he should have gone D1, why didn't he?

Probably because recruiting isn't an exact science and D1 schools miss out from time to time. Playing in SWVA against smaller schools doesn't help in getting offers.

Would you say the top four M7 teams are all better than the top four SWD teams? Well, top five M7 really, but Abingdon won't be in tourney. I think any of GC, RV, Union or Wise would likely win the SWD. How would Lee and Battle do in the SWD? I haven't followed much GBB.

I would take Ridgeview, Gate City, and Union over any team in the Southwest District. Wise would be more than capable of finishing 2nd or 3rd in the SWD. Battle and Lee would still finish towards the bottom of any district. We will find out the answers in about two weeks.

Tim Hayes is the best writer in the area I think. I enjoy reading his stuff

He would be a lot better if 90% of his articles weren't devoted to what happened in the past. Those folks got plenty of press back during their glory days. These kids playing today hardly get a sentence.
