Great City got a reaction from E.Z.DOES.IT in Graham v. Gate City (Feb 21)
EZ.............I agree. Two young teams battled last night. Believe the reserves Scotty played the most last night were two freshman and a sophomore. Both should be scary good next year.
Collier had a great game....despite getting in foul trouble early. He missed 2-3 easy put backs, but Graham had a little to do with that.
The pressure rattled the freshman Dean. Especially during the 3rd quarter. Just some growing pains.
Congrats to Ervin. Got his 1,000 point as a sophomore.
Seems that drawing a charge is a lost art. We did take a couple of charges last night, but it seemed that many times when we had good position, we would move and try to block a shot. #52 is good, but if we would have stood our ground earlier, he would have fouled out quickly.
Was surprised that we had a little problem at times with Graham's press. We had handled pressure well all year. No doubt Scotty will work on that this week.
However.......at the end of the day we played a great game against a great team and get to play again.

Do not think it would be that shocking.
Prob not a lot of difference between GC-Union-Richlands-Graham. This time of year it normally comes down to who makes their shots, and stays out of foul trouble. I would not be surprised if any of those 4 teams win.
Being a GC fan, I sure hope playing at home gives us an edge.

There's no reason why Slagle and Mitchell shouldnt be able to take over the game and put it away themselves. They aren't playing nearly as aggressive as they did against GC.

Union looks like trash. McAnus has costed his team 4 points at the end of each qtr so far by holding for 1 shot with 1:30 remaining on the clock. The sheet McAnus is coaching off of looks very similar to my 9th grade algebra homework that my dog ate once.

Patrick Co. beat Abingdon tonight 51-43. Saw where AHS had 2 technicals called on them in the first half, so bad behaviour travels obviously.

Just imagine an Abingdon vs Wise Central game. Think I would have to go watch.

Was also a very "clean" game by both teams.

We're not gonna argue with the decision. It's totally fine with us.

There's times the ball movement is outstanding for GC and they showed flashes tonight of just how extremely good they can be. I feel better about the post season after what I saw tonight. When GC decided to play D they forced turnovers and made some nice plays in transition. If Dean can get back on track and get dialed in from deep to really spread teams out it's gonna get interesting.
Spoke to the ol' ball coach and hes been dishing out some serious chewings at practice over the lack of defense and rebounding. I honestly think it would make a world of difference if the guys would just stretch their arms out when they are on D.....Take up alot of the passing lane space and cause some disruption. I think they will turn up the intensity these next few games though and finish the season strong.
Also.... Definitely was not expecting Lee to pull off the win against Central. That's a pleasant surprise. Congrats to the Generals. Also figured Ridgeview might score a few more points than they did against Union....The Bears are rolling. Gonna be a showdown at Union (or at UVAWise)
Scoring tonight for GC:
McClung 41
Ervin 23
Dean 14
Collier 4
George 4
Kimbler 3
Compton 1

Something is going to have to be done about the crowds. WAY too many people in the gym. People standing in the hall outside the gym looking in. People seated in the aisles.

Great City got a reaction from Motorhead 5150 in Tazewell Football
Thought some of you Tazewell fans would like to see this quote:
"If we ever stop pushing you, stop pointing out your mistakes, stop telling you what you can do to make this or that better, one of two things has happened. 1. You've gotten so good that you do nothing wrong. There is nothing more we can fix or correct. 2. We've given up on you. Let me assure you that neither of those two things are ever going to happen." ~ Nick Colobro

Sounds like you got the true sense of what Wise Central basketball is all about..... Glad Battle came away with a win!

Great City reacted to Soccer_Dad in Battle @ Wise Central
JSB Boys won 70-62 in an extremely overly physical game. They tried to give it away in the last 3 minutes by missing 8 consecutive free throws. But they held on with good defense... I can see what the GC fans were fussing about. WC had one kid throwing blocks like an O-lineman. He even kneed a Battle kid in the head as he was trying to get up off the floor. Another one flopped at least 4 times.... Very good crowd on hand. WC has some passionate fans, too. They do love their team. They cheered them on relentlessly. They were very friendly and welcoming.... Good game overall. It just wasn't a style of play that you normally see. Watching WC play kinda feels like watching the Detroit Pistons of the 1980s.

McClung is the best basketball player ive seen in this area since calvin talford played at castlewood in the 80s. he can get any shot he wants at anytime. he was the difference tonite. im a huge fan of the kid now. I hope he does well and goes far. I love his passion.

Great City got a reaction from RiverRat24 in Union at Gate City
Union kept whoever was guarding Kimbler inside to try and help stop Mac's penetration. Was not a bad idea, except it really did not stop Mac. If Noah would have hit a few threes early, no doubt they would have abandoned that strategy quickly.
I was real surprised Mitchell guarded Mac. I initially thought Mitchell's length and leaping ability would give Mac problems. Obviously I was wrong. Mac penetrated at will against him, and somehow shot over him several times. Union can't put Slagle on Mac. That would lead to Slagle fouling out early in the game.
With Zac and Dean still not healthy, I think Mac did what he had to do tonight. Truth be told, I think he could score 40 points almost every game. Not sure he can be stopped one-on-one.
In the rematch, whoever guards Slagle will need to stay on him, and not leave him to help out. He is by far their best basketball player.
With two of the "big three" clearly not healthy, I was very pleased with the win.
