Fort Chiswell would have definitely made my top 10 had they not been thrust into the impossible position of replacing a head coach 3 weeks before the beginning of practice.  I still think they have a lot of talent but might struggle early until the new staff can get a foothold on where they are.

Josh Wingate named head coach will run offense and  Murdock defense coordinator. Fort will probably go back to div 1 2019 and will be loaded talent wise

Abingdon defeated Martinez Evans (GA) 4-1 this morning and Coulwood Oakdale (NC) 14-4 this afternoon to advance to the championship game against North Springs (FL) tomorrow morning at 11 am.  I work with two fathers and a mother of a couple of the kids for Abingdon.  Pretty nice experience for some local kids.

Thank goodness Fort has a good principal in place to make the next hire. He will put Fort students/players first.

Is Tiller the heir apparent to Mullins or simply returning home?  Or both?
He seemed to be building something solid at Fort.  In two seasons he had two wins each over Radford and Grayson and victories over George Wythe, Galax and Chilhowie.  Fairly impressive for a program trying to recover from the depleted mess Tom Hale left.

McClung is in a prime position to get a quality education at little to no personal expense.  Anything in addition is pure gravy!
Given 1.2% of all eligible college players get drafted while only 0.7% actually make an NBA roster, let’s wish the young man much success in pursuit of his education while enjoying four healthy seasons of major college basketball.

Just a few quick observations.  Chilhowie is criminally low on that list!!!!!!!!!  Union, Abingdon, Marion and Virginia may be slightly over-valued.  Ridgeview, Grayson and Fort Chiswell may be slightly under-valued.

I'm not sure how many years he uses for future predictions, but take this into consideration. Chilhowie's record for 2014 -17 was 1-9, 2-8, 9-3, and 11-4. That averages out to 6-6 (rounded). Not a record of a state champion or even a runner-up. Union's record for 2014-17 was 9-3, 13-1, 11-2, 13-1. That averages out to 12-2. That's a semi-final appearance. 1 game away from a state appearance.
Both teams couldn't be more opposite in what that have coming back next year with Union essentially losing an entire football team (20) and Chilhowie basically losing nothing. However, his site doesn't take a single "real" factor into account only what's on paper, ie statistics. Statistically speaking, Chilhowie will finish 5-5 and go 1-1 in the playoffs, Union will finish 9-1 and go 3-1 in the playoffs. Logically speaking, Chilhowie will NOT finish 5-5, and I truly have no clue what Union will do. I would love 9-1 though!

Put the money on the table then. The plan was never for them to play at Tazewell. The plan was for the school board to take shots at the city of Bluefield and publicly offer them only $10,000 while holding people in the town of Bluefield, VA hostage until one of them ponied up the other $50,000.
David Woodard is quoted in the BDT today saying the school board will pay $10,000 for graham to play at Mitchell even though last years lease contract was for $60,000. Then later in the same day at the Bluefield Town council meeting someone pledges to anonymously donate $50,000 towards Graham playing at Mitchell stadium!!! What a complete coincidence that news would break the same day that Woodard pledges only $10,000 to the city! Wait, the lease fee for Mitchell is $60,000?? That’s so crazy we found the other $50,000 in the same day the school board publicly puffs out its chest against the city of Bluefield!

Praise be to our school board heroes that absolutely had pure intentions this whole time and never mislead the public for personal gain!!!

Before everyone gets too worked up, just remember that this list is from vhslreference. It's not a prediction of the upcoming season based on current players, coaches, etc... It's a prediction of finishes using a mathematical algorithm based on stats from the past "x" number of years.
It doesn't predict based on returning or lost players. Only past W/L records and his website rating.

There are very few instances where being an independent city is an advantage.   Perhaps if you had a town where the citizens were remarkably more affluent and educated than the surrounding county residents.
And no, Abingdon, I'm not talking about you.

I can’t go on record as much in this realm, but I will say that if the School Board closes TCCTC, it will be the worst mistake that body has ever made.  We have a population here that is PERFECT for vocational training, and taking that away would be utterly devastating, to put it very kindly.  We don’t have the demographics to be a white-collar job mill.  We have the demographics for practical training, and it saddens me to see just how much it’s already been placed on the back-burner.

Interesting article from today's Washington Post.

In an ideal world, cities would be the major economic hubs while counties would be the rural/residential areas.  The city/county division allows cities to have full autonomy over decision making and policies, which presumably would keep greater control of the cities’ resources in the cities (and improve the quality of life there not at expense of the County).  There's a bunch of little idiosyncratic differences that I won’t bore this Board with.

Until the population explosion in NOVA, the system had pretty well worked for its intended purpose.  Now, the system’s breaking down.

I won't go too much into detail but my company pays a higher amount in taxes for an office in Galax than it does for an office in Abingdon.  The out-of-whack tax strategy in Galax is the key factor in Lowe's closing it's Galax store and building a new one a few yards up the street in Carroll County!  Taxes are a double edged sward.  You can go overboard and price yourself out if your'e not careful, which Galax seems intent on doing.
After reading that article, I never knew Virginia was the only state where independent city's were separate entities than the county where they are located.  It stands to reason, if so many of Virginia's independent city's are struggling to survive, why is this still a "thing"?
