TazCoFootball 40 Report Share Posted August 24, 2015 I don't know much about VA High and I'm not sold on on the bulldogs yet. How has VHigh looked and played in their scrimmages?

We may have lost one, but we got about 3 more to make up for it, not counting our qb!
RCITYHOO 110 Report Share Posted August 24, 2015 Watched Va High play 2 halfs Friday night. Can only tell you what I saw, they as a team did not look very good at all. Now weather they were playing to win or just looking to see who's gonna play I don't know. Amherst beat up on them pretty bad as did Radford, I know Va High was playing their 2nd half aganist a fresh Radford team but all i can tell you is that it was not pretty. Bigrhsfan 884 Report Share Posted August 25, 2015 Is there not a way that they can see this conflict or at least a possible conflict and do something about the schedule. That will sure make a long night, and especially for the Tazewell kids and their fans with the long drive home. I may be missing something here, but it looks like they could do the game on a Saturday or some kind of work around.
stu_bean 1,058 Report Share Posted August 25, 2015 I could be wrong and somebody correct me if I am but when I was down there two years ago the stands were as full as they were going to get on the V high side before the baseball game ended. There may have been a handful of people that came over but not enough for me to see the home crowd really grow. Why is this never an issue with Princeton or Graham/Bluefield??? There's a ridiculous amount of parking at/near Mitchell Stadium. With overflows, Bluefield College has always been kind about charging a small fee for additional parking on its grounds. vhsguy 12 Report Share Posted August 25, 2015 As a VHS fan, I apologize to the Tazewell players, coaches, parents, and fans for this annoying inconvenience. It really bothers me that we continue to do this to visiting teams. This happened to Tazewell another time two years ago. And it seems that I recall it happening to Graham a few years ago as well. This could possibly have been avoided through proper coordination between VHS's AD and the Bristol Pirates. However, it is ultimately the Bristol Pirates that determine their own schedule. In addition, no member of the Bristol City Government or School Board is going to risk antagonizing a paying tenant by pressing the issue too much. I do not think that the 1-hour delay is motivated by a desire to increase attendance by allowing spectators from the Pirate's game time to walk over to Gene Malcolm. But rather it is due to the fact that visiting football teams use the same locker room as the visiting baseball teams. Visiting football teams also tend to use the baseball field for some drills and pre-warm-up activities. Also 50kw is correct that foul balls do often land in the north end of the football field. As for why the game was not moved to Saturday, I assume that the Tazewell AD preferred that his football team lose an hour of recovery time to the following week's opponent (Graham?) than to lose almost an entire day. Once again I am very sorry about this delay. And I wish both teams a safe and competitive game. barondawg77 and jblank
Mountain man 121 Report Share Posted August 25, 2015 VHS guy. The WORST was I think in 2011 when the game was stopped for 30-45 minutes during the VHS and Abingdon game for truck haulers and fireworks for the race fans. Really changed the tempo of the game. vhsguy 12 Report Share Posted August 25, 2015 You're right, Mountain Man. Race Week has always wreaked havoc on the first week of high school football (for Tennessee or Virginia depending on the schedule) in Bristol. For the Bristol news media, the high school football season does not begin for real until the August races are finished. I did not get to attend the game that you are referring to, but I did get to listen to parts of it online. If I remember correctly, it was a pretty low-scoring, defensive game that we were able to pull out by making some field goals. It was the kind of nip-and-tuck game in which a long delay could easily become a momentum changer.

Could be worse I know some teams will play a Thursday night game and that in my books is the worst possible alternative.
cityofRaven 2,444 Report Share Posted August 25, 2015 This kind of stuff happens way too often, more so around Halloween. Is it really that hard to look at multiple schedules/calendar and think ahead?

Hacker 82 Report Share Posted August 26, 2015 The Bluefield Appy League team works with the City of Bluefield and has moved games to the afternoon to avoid scheduling conflicts with Graham/Baever.
Bearcat Bob 491 Report Share Posted August 27, 2015 Way back when Detroit was the minor league affiliate in Bristol, the relationship with the school system was very good. It would appear that this may no longer be the case. Unless something has changed, VHS has no control over the field use schedule...both the baseball and football field are owned by the city. Hope the Pirates game does not go extra innings!
