GC HOKE got a reaction from Hokiebird7 in My SWVA Top 5
You can go ahead and ban me too, and I won't even mention the high school on Prices Fork Rd. It seems to me all but one of those posts were sincere. It's mostly probable that the sincere ones didn't know that the forbidden named school wasn't in the SWVA.com area. I know rules are necessary for any successful entity, and I respect that, but "the hammer," and "try me," I can get at work, and are the opposite of why I participate in this site...to talk about and read about something fun, sports, with others who share the same interest. Good day sir.

Akers can recruit these kids to FB til the cows come home and unless he makes it fun to play for him they won't. Akers has to sell his program. I respect the kids playing FB now while the program is down. They play because they love GCHS football. As you say, kids like Ervin/McClung would be difference makers in FB. But you can't blame them for not wanting to especially with them being recruited fairly high in BB.

You are absolutely correct. Gate City fans are spoiled. In all sports. I am one of them. The expectations are very high each season. Regarding football, Coach Fry set the bar very high. You either stay up there, or go down. The athletes are there, it's just that many of the premier ones choose to play other sports and not football. Kids play the sports that are most appealing to them. Instead of playing 2 or 3 sports, many kids are just playing 1 or 2, with football being the sport not played. I am not declaring that football is no longer king at Gate City, but it's not as lopsided as it used to be. It does run in cycles though, and most likely it will cycle back up in the future.

I think if we GC fans take off our blue tinted glasses, step back, and look at our football program...........our main issue becomes fairly clear. We have not put very talented teams on the field the last few years. Yes..........we have had some talented players. No doubt about that. I am talking about total team talent. That has resulted with too many kids having to play both ways, and the offense and defense wearing down as the game progresses. With a lack of total team talent, the importance of remaining injury free has been magnified.
That talent may be walking the halls at GC. If so, we need to get it on the team.

I agree. Not sure GC has the weapons to come back from more than 10 points down. To win games this year, we are going to have to avoid turnovers, and control the clock. Really expect we will be able to run the ball effectively against most teams on our schedule.
Makes perfect sense to me that Union would move the Richlands game to a Thursday/Saturday and play it at UVA Wise. I would be there.

Not to re-hijack the thread, but this is the toughest GC team we've had in awhile. Don't be surprised if it isn't closer than most think. If they get down big early though, I don't see them coming back this early in the year without a quick-strike threat.

GC HOKE got a reaction from Jason in Gate City @ Richlands
You just described to a T last year's game. You are probably correct, but that's why they play the game, to find out who won. Of course I would like to see a win, but a close or respectable loss would give GC alot of confidence against a program of Richlands' caliber. And I agree with GC1, if GC has some key injuries early, it will be tough to earn wins.

GC HOKE reacted to SXSW in Southwest District
I had him for Biology 2 my Jr. year it was first period and if he had a game the night before, he would send me to the gym for the TV and VCR and would break down his game film while we had a reading or study assignment. He would get so upset that he would leave the room over something that happened on the tape from the night before, he would look at me and tell me your in charge I have to go cool off. I was in the stands at the night he got ejected and threw the chair but he was always the same no matter where you saw him at. You are right he could have been a stand up comic and have been very successful.

GC HOKE reacted to RichlandsAlum in SPECIAL REPORT: The new VHSL Configuration
All SWD members played each other from the time the VHSL realignment was normalized through 1979. The 9 game district slate only allowed for one non-district match up, which was tight for some folks but accommodated longstanding rivalries for most others.
The addition of Lebanon changed everything. While it would have been simple for everyone in the SWD to play an exclusive district slate, there was no agreement to do so. Graham didn't want to give up its game with Bluefield. Same story with Virginia High's annual game with Tennessee High. From 1980 through 1985, the solution was that there was one SWD team (chosen at random, I believe) that you wouldn't play -- or that wouldn't count in the district standings if you actually did play them. No fault of the Lebanon folks -- they simply had to go where they were slotted -- but that was the beginning of the end.
