I would agree, but at the time they were trying to make consolidation as smooth as possible. The thought was since the students were the ones to be truly impacted it would be less controversial if they decided.
Ultimately, I think the goal was to keep as much out of the hands of adults because they were the ones arguing about everything.

Lonesome Pine was an absolutely perfect name and a huge missed opportunity. Another mistake, if the name had to be Union, was to not select Miners as the mascot. 
I wasn't familiar with Indian Creek, but that would've been an excellent choice for Kelly-Pound
As far as Coeburn-St Paul, there was a less obvious choice but Tom's Creek, Guest River, Clinch River, Ralph Stanley, or 50 other names would've been far better than Eastside. Hellbenders paired with a river name would've been superb.

IMO, students are ill-equipped to select a proper school name. Most have little knowledge or appreciation for local history, geography, or fauna. The results are unimaginative and generic names and mascots best suited for a Disney Channel high school.

Can't tell me they aren't recruiting and holding back. 9 state titles were bought and paid for by Olin Matheison, and it's hard to score against a team of 30 year old railworkers who can't read.

Just for the record, I absolutely don't care either way. I would've loved to have seen Graham-Riverheads or Union-Riverheads this season.

So, I guess the problem really is Virginia High
