Highly compensated huh? Are you taking into account travel expenses, time away from our day jobs and families, association fees, uniforms? It all adds up. I’ve accepted the criticism, harsh comments and wacky schedule from day 1 and embrace it for what it is. We do it because we love the game. The rule book reads like a legal document. Some work harder than others to grasp it and in the heat of the moment, we’re asked to recall something in our brain verbatim. Even the D-1 guys get tangled up, so give us the break instead.

For what it's worth, the video coverage is spectacular for a high school game. Believe it or not, as an association, we can not always get film from coaches when we ask for it to review our performance during games. If more schools did this, you'd see the level of officiating definitely improve.
Disclaimer: I am not familiar with any of this crew and I was not a part of this crew. I was in Saltville. Here's something to ponder on. Every time we take the field on a Friday in the regular season, we have 5 sets of eyes watching 22 players, plus benches, coaches, parents, volunteers, and the clock. The perfect game has not been officiated yet at any level. We get one look at everything from field level and it is expected to be called perfectly and most of the time, the biggest critics do not have a clue of the actual rule they're questioning. I know I miss something EVERY game. So please, do not assign blame to any official, 99% of us do the best job we can for the game we are assigned. If anyone thinks they are more qualified, just let me know and I will let you know how to get on the field and help us out next season.

Now, why do you have to bring logic, reason and valid points into this? I would like to just be able to yell at you without a guilty conscience. haha
In all seriousness, even though the officials are a sports fan's public enemy(s) #1, I certainly wouldn't want to do it and don't think I could do it better. It is a tough, thankless job and I am appreciative of those that do tolerate the hardships involved to allow us to watch this game of football.

Correct. Common misunderstanding made by fans AND players is they think targeting in HS results in ejection. We do not have the benefit of replay (yet, and man I dread when we do, only because of how long games would drag) so targeting is penalized the same as any other live ball personal foul. We do our best to use preventative officiating to address these fouls. I've called 3 at the HS level, two on obvious ear holes on the sideline, and one on a back who lowered his head to use the crown of his helmet to plow a DB when he was obviously going OB. It's going to have to have to be obvious to 5 visually impaired people in the top row for most of us to call it flagrant. What I ask myself is "Was this hit truly avoidable?"
The only usual DQ's at this level are for fighting and earning two unsportsmanlike fouls in the same game.

The best I can find, targeting in and of itself is a 15 yard penalty only unless it is deemed flagrant. At that point a player can be "disqualified" from the game. Apparently, "ejection" is not a term that is used in NFHS rules.
Anywho, a player that has been disqualified is also disqualified for the next contest unless the disqualification is for fighting. That produces a 2 game disqualification unless reversed on appeal.

Shew, after reading this I am more relieved than ever to have gotten pulled off of a game involving a KY team as a wing official in a few weeks and making my debut as a white hat with a piece meal crew. It's no fun to have an out of state sideline in our coverage area. I will normally stand up for my fellow zebras, However, I've seen film from games in WV and KY that make me CRINGEEEEEE. God bless y'll.

Don't sleep on GW Clisso's restaurant at the Country Club, and you do not have to be a member to eat there. It's very reasonably priced and the food is outstanding. I've never had anything but a great experience there. Usually on Friday and Saturday night he has a buffet and salad bar along with menu items available. He has a line of salad dressings that are available locally that are AMAZING. If my crew was going to be in BSG, that's where I'd plan our pre-game meal would be.

Well folks, we're back and unretired.  Uncle Percy was wanting to unretire last year when his UN-beloved Salem Toy Soldiers lost 3 in a row (I believe that was last year). Uncle Percy was doing cartwheels, back flips, jumping up and clicking his heels together, and even won a Flat Footin' Contest.  (1- he can't dance worth a lick; 2- we all thought he had a "bad" back). That was UNTIL, UNTIL he and Cousin Delbert went to Johnson City, TN and got to see The Donald J Trump, President, third row seats.  Well folks football pickin' was out and politicin' was in. Didn't take long for Uncle Percy to find out he was much better at football pickin' than be a politician.
We had our picks for last week but, Uncle Percy ran off with them in his pocket when he and Delbert went off chasing a U.S. Senator from Virginia.
    Time to pick some losers.
    Bluefield, WV at Princeton
This is the opener for the Tigers.  The Tigers haven't had much success against the Flat Tails in a long, long, long, long time. They hope to change this Friday. The Flat Tails smacked the Feds around last week and won their "track" meet. The Flat Tails will be looking to defend and win another Mercer Cup (The Feds are included) this Friday.  The Tigers will come out roaring but will find out that no matter how loud you roar, a Tiger is no match for a Flat Tail.
    Lil' Leonard's Loser:  Princeton
    Honaker and Castlewood:
The Orange Tabbies will cross Buzzard's Roost to take on the Blue Imps of Castlewood this Friday trying to claim another Buzzard's Roost Trophy.  The Tabbies clawed their way to a victory over The Buckskin LongRifles of Lebanon last Friday. However, The Blue Imps ran into a bunch of Rowdy Rebels last week and it was not pretty. We doubt that The Imps will have enough time to repair and resharpen their pitchforks by Friday for a Tabbie attack. Looks like  "Dean" Hubbard's Orange Tabbies will be taking home The Buzzard's Roost Trophy.

    Richlands and Union
Coach did not win number 200 last week and Uncle Percy had written a nice little jingle about the Generals and Bears last week. This week The Big Blue Wind Machine will be blowing into Bullit Park to do some Bear wrestling. The Bears sharpened their claws last week against a bunch of, not to well armed for Bear Hunting, Generals. The BBWM will be blowing extra hard this Friday after their lost to Gate City. The BBWM will be flinging the ball all over the place, Yet, they will not have enough wind to blow these Bears away.
Lil Leonard's Loser:  Sorry Coach Mance, Richlands.
    Rye Cove and Hurley
Interesting game, both are 1 - 0. The Eagles will be flying into The Cliff hoping to build a Roost on top of it. Don't know much about the 1 - 0 Eagles because they have yet to play a game. Last week they won 1 - 0 over the Jenkins Cavaliers by forfeit. Now the Rebels rolled into Naugatuck and came away with a hard fought victory over The Tug Valley Brawlers. Now Naugatuck is a tough place, even on Sundays, to win a football game. These Eagles may be in big, big trouble. Look for The Eagles to be flying home minus a lot of tail feathers.

chipinbogey got a reaction from Optimal62 in GW, will they add a 10th game?
I don't really care one way or the other either, but we need to look at this from the assumption they'll be traveling by school bus. I know a lot of districts have governors on their buses but, I am not sure at what rate(55 or 65) and the speed limit on 77 and 81 in VA is 70. Also, keep in mind that a bus does not handle like a passenger car. That's where the mountain roads will add more time too.

FWIW, I will buy anyone a Frosty if they can make it from Hurley High School to Auburn High School in 2:47 driving a school bus. It takes every bit of an 1:20 in a car running the speed limit to get to 77 from Grundy(middle of town) after traffic lights and the bipolar speed limit changes on 460. And from that same spot in Grundy in a car, the best you can do to HHS is going to be around that 30 minutes if you don't get hung behind a slow poke, school bus, coal truck, side by side, or horse. Yeah, I've been stuck behind everyone of them at some point in time heading to Hurley. Sometimes a combination of the 5. Hurley's wild ya'll.

Same principle applies when you consider the last 2/3 of the Max Meadows, VA - Williamson, WV circuit is on U.S. 52, which is enough to fry any school bus’s brakes.  You can’t come close to hitting 55 MPH around those curves in a Subaru Legacy, much less a school bus.
