One of the first games I remember seeing as a kid. Bullett Park was nuts that night.

It's sad some Richlands fans only know football after 2005.

Perkins didn't show up until 1987 or so...he was a year behind me, grew up playing football with him and JK from 4th grade on...his dad was one of our coaches. Rough bunch though from 1980-1986 in Grundy, they didn't have the best record or even a lot of Wins to show for it, but the kids loved to hit...pretty much all of the schools back then were like that. People really don't know unless you played during that time or coached or went to the games just how violent it was...we all beat the living hell out of each other, literally. It was just a different time and a different game.

We were not allowed to hang out on the fence and talk to cheerleaders or people in the crowd, couldn't take your helmet off, water was a reward especially during two-a-days when it was 100+ degrees in the cow pasture we practiced in, most of practice was spent hitting each other not running plays, Monday = gut check, not everyone dressed out on Friday night even the good kids had to earn their jersey each week, if you missed a practice for any reason you didn't dress out that week, you didn't talk back to your coaches you just did what you were told and if you did it wrong god have mercy on your soul, weight room was not in any way an optional place to hang out when you felt like it, if you didn't win the long bus ride home was silent and you could hear a pin drop...things were just different than they are now.

The majority of kids today would've quit the first day of practice if they were playing back in the days of the old SWD. They hadn't invented arm tackling back then and it was great!

Yes, 1989. He was #23 in this video. I think he was injured in this game and missed the final against Southampton.

IMO that team is one of the most talented to ever come out of this area simply because of the number of players who went on to play college ball. They just didn't dominate due mostly to the conservative nature of the coaching staff. That team would have been sick in a run oriented spread in today's game. I think their defense gave up 30 points total in their 4 playoff wins.

Plus the level of competition was higher back then. At that time Tazewell was in Division 4 (essentially 4A), although like the 89 Graham and 92 Richlands teams, they had the benefit of playing all 4 playoff games at home.

Off the top of my head, a few of the others off that team who played in college:

    RB/DB Jeff Lamie (Ferrum)
    OT John Blankenship (Ferrum)
C/NT Chris McCall (Clinch Valley / UVa Wise)

I don't think he played in college, but the heart and soul of that team was arguably Jeff McCann....all 5'6, 155 lbs of him...started at FB and LB.

Jesse Davis (won the Junior National college Championship at Lees McRae as starting QB) , Robert Viney (Hampton), Stephan Holloway (Va Tech), Quentin Reed (ETSU). I hate to single any of them out. That was some kind of a year. Everyone all together as one unit.

I understand the thought process behind what you are saying, I think, but largely disagree with the proposed course of action.  Understanding kids make mistakes is one thing, condoning and even rewarding them for it is an entirely different matter.  I am not trying to get into the whole "generational gap" issue but maybe that's why millennials are by-in-large, out of touch with many social standards.  Kids are not held to any standard much less the same standard we were held to.  I am not suggesting policy and procedure never change from one generation to another but lack of action is still an action.  By not holding him accountable, an action is taken to condone or dismiss the behavior.

Yes, teenagers are prone to emotional outbursts but If this kid plays other sports, he will be far less likely of repeating this behavior given he was held accountable for this decision.  And make no mistake, it was a decision for him to act the way he did.  Life is about the choices we make and every choice carries with it, consequence.  Learning these lessons as a teenager may keep this young man from making a mistake as an adult that follows him for a lifetime.

I wasn't at the game but have seen several video clips of this kid pointing and taunting opponents, not only in this game but others as well.  Obviously, he hasn't been held accountable for the behavior prior to now.  If he had, maybe his choice would have been different in that moment.  Maybe a choice by the other "family members" to not allow him on the sideline will reinforce the notion that choices carry consequence.

That '86 doggie team was pretty solid from top to bottom. A lot of players from that roster went on to the next level. And they were all genuinely good guys as a rule.

And now I feel a bit light headed. Pretty sure I have never been that complimentary of anything Tazewell related in my life.

Trust me, they do. Richlands is well renowned by everyone not from Doran to be pretty prolific smack talkers in their own right. They sure aren't the choirboys that this board seems to portray.

It would be very tough for Tazewell to make a run with those kids as freshmen, I don't care who the coach is. The core is there, lineman will need to be developed and parents need to be put in there place. Talent pool is changing as is work ethic.

Still taking applications, no interviews yet.

Lets be honest here for a minute... The confederate flag sure does not represent something positive. Try and spin it as you wish but the flag was a battle flag for the South. The South stood for "States Rights'" and slavery. Okay, glad we got that settled.

Now back to Hurley. What flavor of cupcake you guys going with next year schedule wise? This year was Red Velvet but i hear next year funfetti is making an appearance!

The states may have seceded to continue the institution of slavery but the men who fought and died for the Confederacy did so to defend their homes from an invading army, they fought because it was an "us versus them" mentality, they opposed the Union because what do those people up in DC, up in the northern cities know about me and my rural life, what right do they have to tell me to do anything?

When teams are nicknamed the Rebels and when they're depicting confederate soldiers they're not representing the southern elite, they're representing the common man. The battle flag represents the men that fought against insurmountable odds to defend their homes and refused to quit. The men that owned no slaves and just enough land to scrape out a living. Men that did not own slaves. If Hurley's mascot was a man with a whip I would agree 100% but that's not what it is and to make that equation is ridiculous.

Is there racism and hate associated with the flag, yes of course. Is that what the mascot and flag represent, in no way. The KKK marches with the Christian and American flag as well as the swastika, does that make Christians and patriots racist? No.  Are people that fly the flag supposed to just turn it over to racist idiots? No, they're fighting for it.

Slavery may have been the key states rights issue but its still a states rights. Its still why should the slight majority get to determine the direction of the of the slight minority?

parsons, you're not as educated on the matter as you think you are. What you're doing is giving your personal opinion and presenting it as irrefutable fact, when its not and you flatly refuse to see any other perspective.

I remember in 2014 when Martinsville(1-9) came to Giles and during warm ups started stomping on the single wing at midfield. Such a cocky bunch to have won 1 game that season. That alone costed them a 63-0 whooping
