I disagree to an extent.  A couple of school board member as educators, sure.  But having diversity on a school board eliminates tunnel vision and allows for an outside perspective.  It's difficult to think outside the box while isolating yourselves inside a box.  Our local school board features a lawyer, a veterinarian, a retired Naval Officer, a retired Biology teacher and an Industrial Designer.  To use your analogy, you wouldn't want 5 dentists overseeing your dental office either.  Who is managing the business?  Payroll?  Taxes?  EOE compliance?  Sustainability?  Growth?
Experience can't be taught but is essential to growth.  Experience is something that must be earned.  Why not use the diverse experience of your community to help the next generation?  Surrounding yourself with too much of the same thing limits potential.

Thad Wells has facilities in Mooresville that nobody in SWVA can match.  I can't imagine he would give those up but I could be wrong.  Athletic boosters pay for every athlete to work out here...........

Yeah... let’s go ahead and take that third name off there hahaha. I don’t pretend to think I could coach lol. I don’t know even nearly enough.

IF — and there a big if — Thad wants to come back, I can’t imagine he won’t be given the keys to the kingdom. And Blues fans would welcome him with open arms.

I was told by my HS government teacher that the top 3 reasons someone runs for school board are: 1.) Remove a coach      2.)Remove a principal     3.)Remove a teacher
All these years later, I have discovered that he was right. Rarely, in today's times, does someone run for school board, town council or board of supervisors because they want to genuinely help their community. There's always an agenda. Start something, stop something, change something/somebody, for a personal reason.
Sometimes, it is hard to believe the level of ignorance spewed about that I have seen involving this topic's issue as well as during the consolidation of Wise Co's schools. Truly mind blowing how small some people's minds are. Like you said get more educated...if they will accept the knowledge. Get more involved...if they can accept the challenge.

City managers and County Administrators are appointed or hired by the elected Board of Supervisors or City Council.  They have no official "term" of office.  They are employed in that role until they retire, leave for another position or the Board of Supervisors / City Council choose to replace them.  City Council or Board of Supervisors elections are generally staggered to have only one or two seats coming up for election at one time.

Local elections such as school boards, board of supervisors and/or city council have a tremendous impact on our daily lives as opposed to anything that happens on a national level.  Nobody reading this thread has had an appreciable change to their existence from the Obama years to the Trump years.  Absolutely nothing of any substance changes as a result of who occupies the Oval Office.  Get more educated and involved locally and let the garbage in DC remain the three-ring circus it's become!
I'll get off my soapbox now!

Is it giving them a free pass though?  The more kids a school system has, the more money the state sends to that community, and it's a significant amount.  Thereby, bringing more of your tax revenue back to your community.

    Possibly, maybe, but no.
To understand school funding you would need to understand the Local Composite Index calculation that determines a locality's ability to pay for their children's education. Since no Reg 7 school district's LCI is above 50%, that essentially means that the locality is getting more from the state than they are contributing. So, is your income tax/sales tax getting put into a general pot that goes to all districts in VA? Technically, yes. Is all of the money that each Reg 7 district being returned plus more? Pretty much.
Based on data gathered from VDOE and tax.virginia.gov, and using Scott Co as the example since they are the topic of discussion, Soott Co sent Virginia less than $20 million in income/sales tax. Virginia funded their school system $28 million. And this isn't counting the other state money that the county/town governments receive from Virginia.
The TN residents aren't the winners here because they are paying all those taxes to Tennessee and NOT getting a free education in return. At least not from Tennessee. The REAL winners here are the students of Scott Co, as they get to share in the extra Virginia funded revenue that each TN kid brings in.
So, are you or any other Reg 7 resident paying for these TN students? No, not likely. Are residents in Fairfax City, Falls Church, Alexandria, Surry, Highland, Goochland, Bath, Arlington and others paying for it? Yep, most likely.
Claiming that a resident of Washington county is paying for TN students to attend school in Scott Co is stretching it a bit or otherwise Washington Co's LCI would be over 50% rather than the 35.22% it is.

That’s the thing...for simplicity sake, think of it like this: For every $1.50 the county spends on a student, they get $8.00 in state and federal funds. The caveat is that the locality has to spend that $1.50 in order to get those funds, and the BOS is allocating the $1.50 to the school system,  but the school system itself gets the $8.00. The total money is spread across the school system to pay employees and operate the system...not just at one school, but all schools in the district. So, if the county loses kids, they save some money of their own, but they lose out on a ton of state and federal money that is desperately needed in order to operate the school system itself.

Glenvar fielded a very young team this season. They have a lot of size and talent coming back.
Central Wise should be very good as well. They improved significantly from August to November.

I thought the same thing about him stepping into the role when he left Fort Chiswell. Especially, with this line in the Roanoke article... "It came down to if I don’t take this opportunity now I don’t know when this situation with location and job would come open again."

Caleb has told me wrestling taught him how to be a better football player several times. The Galax Wrestling Club opened a facility in 2017. Kevin’s days don’t end after the high school releases. He goes to the club and teaches elementary age kids for another couple of hours. Awesome family!

I wish more HS football players wrestled.  I don't think many players or coaches fully appreciate the benefits. I would dare say much of Spurlin's football success ties back to things learned on the mat from his dad.
