TripleThreat reacted to Hokie Bound in Week 1 Chilhowie vs Marion
It looks like Smyth County football will struggle again this year. Marion was the better team but that doesn't always matter. Chilhowie is not great but played with a lot of heart as expected.

northwood needs to clean house that was an ugly performance all the way around

This game has been moved back to 8 instead of 7 because of the heat.

Good article about Mark Palmer’s return to SWVA as an assistant coach at Northwood.

TripleThreat reacted to Hokie Bound in Scrimmages/ Benefit Games 8-18
I was curious to see what Bland looked like so I watched them on the NFHS network this morning. These kids need to be playing a JV schedule. Give them credit for trying but they will have a hard time finishing the season again.

I agree, the system is still new, but it doesn’t seem like they’ve improved any from last year. Marion needs a youth football program (other then flag), so when these kids get to middle school and high school they know and understand this offense (and know proper tackling technique). These kids are getting to middle school with no real football experience and are thrown out there to play teams like Graham, and it’s sad. You said the triple option shortens the game (which I agree), but we struggle to get first downs so our offense is barely on the field. Coach Ginn has had plenty of coaching experience, so hopefully he can figure all of this out.

Marion is in year 2 of a new system that was taken over only a month before the start of last season. While your assessment of the skill players makes sense, they aren’t big enough up front to protect long enough to be successful in the spread in the SWD. Triple is a good offense for a team that’s undersized up front with some decent athletes. The QB doesn’t necessarily have to be a great athlete (although that helps) but needs to be a good leader and good decision maker. Running triple also shortens the game and keeps the score from getting out of hand, allowing a weaker team to stay in games longer.

I can't tell you what my favorite thing about the NFHS Network is...
Is it the fact that despite paying for it, I have to see the same ad every time I bounce between games.
Or is it that most places can't even get their equipment to work.
Or maybe the fact that there was just some random kid by himself roaming the field in Saltville..

TripleThreat reacted to 1inStripes in 2023 scrims/jams/bg's
If Holston can keep their QB healthy they will be tough offensively. Losing the Botts twins will hurt a lot physcially.

So PH and Chilhowie are the only ones on this list south of GW. Seems like that would give them a distinct advantage at least locally.

TripleThreat reacted to 1inStripes in SWD Prediction
I have a feeling Marion may surprise some people. Excellent coach, 1 D1 football player on the roster. They wont challenge for the district title but much better than previous seasons and not the team in the cellar.

Twin Valley Dressed 14 and had 3 out with two more pickups from the rumor mill. Played hard and has a dandy little fr QB. Loss both but looked like they gave good effort. Eastside was surprisingly solid after last year. PH was huge and best team there. Hurley played hard and had their moments. Castlewood has a good Qb and good wr. Northwood had a bigger roster than expected with an athletc qb and solid rb.

Not a big fan of this move. Opens up a can of worms for other schools to move down so they can beat schools that have 200 less students than they do.

TripleThreat reacted to sixcat in Questions for Thursday's Pod?
Zone blocking schemes in a power running game are one thing. Dixon is better at coaching the OL than anyone in our area. He's been doing that for years. Seeing Galax throw the football 52 times to 13 different receivers in two games (counting benefit against Floyd) is a dynamic shift in philosophy for a Mark Dixon coached team. Multiple formations with very little of the single power back set we're used to seeing from Galax.
Those who know me on this site, know i'm not prone to hyperbole. I'm very much a realist who has been saying Galax needs to be more balanced for a number of years now. With that said, this Galax team is deeper and more talented than any I can remember Dixon having with speed and athleticism in spades. Couple that with two very gifted QB's and a shift in offensive philosophy to get the ball in the hands of that speed in the open field, it could be a special season. I'm more excited to see this season play out than any in recent memory.
