I hope they can get it fixed properly and quickly.   Gene Malcolm is typically one of the best facilites around when combining natural grass and seating for home and visitors.  Locker rooms are the only issue I have had with the setup.

The last part of the statement is inaccurate. Crews are assigned two weeks out, and sure, you have your best crews on your highest profile games or games with biggest playoff implications. There is a thought process on who goes where each week(we have approximately 10-12 days of notice). I can recall at least 2 games I worked last season featuring an out of state opponent and no less than 60 years of (combined)experience was on each of those fields. Games featuring an out of state opponent do not automatically get the inexperienced crews. Where you really see the experienced guys is past round 2 of the playoffs. With the numbers the way they are, we are just happy to get the games covered every week, putting newer guys with veterans to gain them valuable experience in a big game environment is not uncommon. Contrary to popular belief, we are ALWAYS trying to improve and elevate the level of officiating in our part of the state for the student-athletes and member schools we serve.

I think every fan base has a few fans we’re not proud of or that are an embarrassment.

I can concur about the complaints about officiating by Ridgeview even on the sidelines. If the RV coaches worried more about coaching than the officials, they might fair better in playoffs. Working the chains can give one great insight into a team & coaching staff if you’ve ever done it.

They got beat by GW soundly and got handed their tails to them by Galax the last two weeks of regular season . Then caught Galax looking forward to GW and now all of the sudden they are a top tier program in 1 A???   That’s just to much BS to handle on one post.
The super intendant threatend legal action to stay in 1A. Told everyone last year that coach James had never lost to coach Dixon and wouldn’t lose to coach Allen either then proceeded to get beat three times in a row.

We're good. If anything, you may see some crews more than once this weekend or some pretty stout pieced together crews with solid experience across the field if they normally do not work together. When I came in, no first or second year officials got playoff games, now it is necessary by the numbers to put them there. That being said, with how lopsided some of these first round matchups should be, not only is it great that we have enough to cover, but we are getting those newer guys some real playoff experience and learning from some of the veterans.

    1. Schedule a Marion-JSB series.
    2. Call Steve Wright and beg him to come back.
Incidentally, this advice could also apply to Marion.

They deserve just as much as a team with a winning record/better seed making bank on points due to playing decent smaller schools with winning records.  Kids are guaranteed one more week to play a game, that most will never play again so enjoy one more show and appreciate it.  Hell I wish they could do the plus-one again like the covid year so those non-qualifiers could play one last time.  Put yourself in their shoes.  JSB/Mar/TW/Eastside/etc. for example get a chance to call someone and more than likely to get an evenly matched game for a final would probably be the most excitement they've had all season after taking a bunch on the chin.
Strictly on the competitive side of things, make it top 4 so it means a lot more to do well the entire season.

No, any team that ends up 2-8 shouldn’t be in the playoffs but unfortunately, the VHSL has a flawed system in place that allows this to happen. If Region D had several more schools, then maybe not but unfortunately with only 11 teams & 8 spots, not much can be done about it.  Kids that wouldn’t get to play one more game get to have that chance. It just drags out the season into December which I dislike. If they would eliminate the bye week & start a week earlier in August that would eliminate December playoffs though. That makes too much sense.

Many years ago I used to umpire so I have some experience in softball and baseball. Here is my take of refs....Almost all of them are trying to do a good job. It is much harder to ref football today than it was back in the day. More rules, More open offenses, etc.
The main problem that I see is game management. Marking the ball correctly. Especially on out of bounds punts. The white hats need to do better. Marking penalties. I can't tell you how many times I have seen 5 yd penalties turn into 4 yard or 6 yard penalties. No one seems to want to take the time to measure for a first down. Play clock management. Some refs wait wait too long some way too short. Game control. When things get chippy stop the game and warn both sides and then follow up on your warnings.
