No kidding, me and the wife make special trips to Lebanon just to eat Bonanza!  Idk that its that good, but its comforting I guess. Brings back memories from the past when I thought Bonanza was a fancy steakhouse

HA, look at that. Hoss Cartwright started the restaurant chain. I was being facetious.

Fun fact, the song "Russell County Line" was actually written about the buffet queue at Bonanza.

It's essentially the thread holding Russell County together at the moment.

Spot on…you can’t force desire and so many kids these days want the rewards but want to bypass the work to get there.

Yeah, I meant "March" to imply working all year. It's hard to compete on a state level if you're not in the weight room all year long. That's why so many schools are replacing traditional gym classes with weight training. But you can't force kids into it. They either want to or they don't.
I overheard a decently famous golf instructor tell a dad one time, "if he's not doing this on his own, dragging you out of the house to hit balls everyday, he's never going anywhere in this game. You can't do it for him and you can't force desire!"

Agree with you on this. The kids have to have a “want to” factor. But some kids are just out there to be with their buddies and joke around the whole time. You can look at the baseball team which is almost always on the field 365 days out of the year. The basketball team usually is even playing in the summer. Meanwhile the football team only has a handful of players even coming to workouts. Starting a dynasty program requires a couple of things. Great coach and solid group of close athletes.

If the truth is that players weren’t going to play if Taylor remained the coach, the truth is they don’t love the sport. Anyone would be crazy to look at this situation and want to be the next guy the players didn’t want to play for “because he gets them hurt”. I don’t even know the guy but that’s ridiculous. I can remember a time when Lebanon actually had a legit program, (I played vs them in the 1990 Semis when they dropped to 1A D2), and those guys were in no way soft and their commitment to the sport was unquestionable. If Lebanon ever want to be at that level again, it will take a change in the players, not in the coach.

Injuries will happen during football. Proper weight training and conditioning can reduce that number but never completely eliminate them. I can see frustration surrounding a coach if he hasn't implemented a proper training routine. With that said, the kids have to buy-in and participate. Weight training and conditioning isn't something you can fake and make in relation to football.
I know a few programs where a proper training program was in place but only a handful of kids participated on a regular basis, which ultimately hurt the team. A couple of those instances, coaches were blamed by the community but the coaching staff can't force kids to participate. It almost always comes back to "want to" on the part of the kids in the school system. Reading between the lines, it sounds like maybe there is some of that going on here.

I'm not talking about current or last year's RIchlands staff when I say "development".  Something tells me Richlands is going to start being a strong pull for QB/WR development.  There are a lot of Richlands connections out there in SWVA.

To me a legend in the area.  Sarge was a long time assistant for Harry Fry at Gate City.  In the late 70s he took over as the lead Dawg at Appalachia stepping down in 79 after a 7-3 campaign handing the keys to Tom Turner to take over.  Sarge then took over the Rye Cove program in 83 and got the broke on the brink of a state title in 88.  RC had defeated Jonesville at Jonesville near the end of the regular season before losing to the Dogs in a mud bowl in the region finals during the improbable run for the crew from Jonesville.  Sarge stepped out of coaching after 1990 but returned to the Cove in 97.   He was to be he HC but took the assistant title instead so a former player, Joe Carter could be the HC.   Sarge still ran almost everything for the program for the next three years which were some of the programs winningest teams.   He took over the Twin Springs program in 2003 as they were coming out of a really rough stretch.  I asked him why he was heading up there.  Coach told me he liked a challenge and had coached at GC and RC, he might as well mark off the last county school before he retired for good. Coach stepped down after only two seasons.  He led TS to two of their programs three region final games during those two years.
Coach Reed wasnt flashy.  He wore the same clothes to practice everyday and its hard to tell how many miles had been put on his 80s Thunderbird.  He expected you to be physical as he said he only felt like he had lost two ballgames when his teams were the most physical one on the field.  The playbook wasn't super deep on either side of the ball but like the nickname "Sarge" practice was drilled like military over and over to run things to perfection.  He commanded respect but showed his "bigguns" a lot of love over the years.  RIP to a SWVA coaching legend in my book.

Imo VHSL should cut to 5 classes(maybe 4) and expand the playoff participants for the top 2 classes. There are a ton of schools in that enrollment range that are basically the same size, no need for different classes between schools with 1,200 students and 1,800 for example, and set a hard # for 1A.

Competition would be better and the VHSL wouldn't lose any $

All assistants and community members can do is either support or destroy, that's it. Any deviation from support is destruction. Know your role and push the program forward. Anything else erodes the HCs authority and hurts the program. HCs have a role too, lead and take responsibility. If they're not doing that then they're at fault.
Im not saying blindly follow but know your role and shut your mouth. Im not saying the HC is 100% at fault, but ultimately it falls on him.

Much like Tech is trying to regain the Tidewater area. I think it's only fitting for the presser to be held in McDowell County. It's time for Richlands to get back to their roots and retake their stake of that area.

Agreed.  When you have a quality staff everyone is contributing and at times that may be in the form of counter points, input on game plan and it all gets fined tuned together.  No one ego can be bigger than the other but the assistants have to understand the HC may get the glory but they also will shoulder the most blame too.

WHO IS THE SECOND BEST TEAM IN 2A?

    FACTORS CONSIDERED ***
--Marion scored 22 points on Va High, while Graham scored only 20
--Marion scored 40 points against Lebanon in game shortened for weather at 4:20 in the 3Q. A proportional calculation results in Marion scoring 60 points on the Pioneers over 4 quarters, while Graham scored only 59.
--Radford defeats both Graham and Riverheads

    CONCLUSIONS:
    Marion>Graham
    Radford>Graham
    Radford>Riverheads
Therefore, Radford and Marion>Graham and Riverheads

SECOND BEST TEAM IN 2A: Marion Scarlet Hurricanes

***Any other factors that contradict this assertion, I have personally deemed irrelevant or inconsequential including head-to-head, outcomes of common opponents, W-L records, margin of victory, strength of schedule, computer rankings, and common sense.
