It is the journey that is important, not the destination.  To me the goal is not become a better athlete, it is to become a responsible citizen.  Hard work and the ability to overcome adversity are paramount in football and in life.  In my opinion, there is too much emphasis on the good of the program and not enough on the development of the kid.  Not specifically at Richlands, generally in society.  Also, you have to keep "daddy ball" at a minimum at every level.

I was lying awake the other night about to apply for this job then I realized, half the people on this board bitch about my broadcasting, I can only imagine the criticism I'd get if I were to get the coaching job.
I think I'll stay in the booth 😘

136ish for this thread vs 450 for the Akers thread.  Not even 1/3rd of the way there yet.  Only real way to get there is......
"I have it on good authority Akers is coming to Richlands."

Rarely is it a fantastic HC with a solid all around staff, usually its a 2 man job: a very good HC and an incredible guy at OC/DC as his right hand man.

Yes Sir, and if you don't adjust or don't succeed you are just processed out and no one misses you a bit.  That is their first experience of how the world doesn't worry one bit about you.
Even more reason why coaching is a higher calling than a stipend.  You should be a teacher and mentor to those in your charge.  You should give a damn.  This generation needs more mentors and positive influencers.  Coaches are judged by more than wins/losses, they are/should be judged by their positive impact on their kids.

That's dependent upon the kid. Some, with the guidance of parents, understand the need to be prepared for college and that local high schools aren't equipped to provide that preparation.
Governor's School opportunities and Early College programs are available to all students who choose to put that work in while still in high school. Most never take advantage of those opportunities offered to them.

Understanding how to properly manage time is the hardest thing to learn post high school. Regardless of whether it's an athlete or regular college student. A lot of people never really learn the concept. It's why a certain percentage of every graduating class end up back home after a semester or two at college. That percentage seems to be a little higher in our region for some reason.

This is normal at pretty much everywhere.  You take a kid whos been a "stud" at his high school and throw him in with 80-100, "studs" from their high school and the cream rises to the top very quickly.  A majority of them cant handle that nor the 13-14 hour days of football for the school year and then the expectations of what you are supposed to do during the summer to show at camp in shape and ready to roll.  Lastly, most cant handle college education, they don't know how to study and do work on their own.  College professors don't care if you are a football player and have little to no time to do work or study; zero time management for a lot of freshman.  A lot flunk out or quit school after 1 semester.  My freshman class at E&H on day 1 was around 90 to 100 on senior day it was 18.

Uhhh. There’s a lot to unpack here.
    1. You are the one who said, “this crap of putting guys in there that don’t know football has got to stop !” And last I checked, Tarter was one of the guys who coached this team.

This is a very interesting take. My biggest concern with talent development trends in most sports is the way to early separation of the haves and have nots. Football especially is dependent upon physicality and way too many potential players are prevented from learning and developing due to injury, burnout, or negative experiences due to bad coaching or late maturity. Smaller teams with seemingly more equitable talent breeds more playing time and fewer blowouts.

That's been my opinion since sixcat talked about Dixon implementing that setup when he arrived at Galax: more kids on the field, more control by the Varsity HC, playing become more feasible for all families, etc. Just makes sense

Usually the concussions are from the head hitting the ground.  I don't think people realize that "getting your bell rung" is often a mild concussion.  If a 10 year old hits an 8 year old, wraps him up and drives his hips on the tackle and there is no helmet-to-helmet (basically a text book tackle).  The 8 year old has a good chance of having the back of his helmet smack the field with enough force to move the brain inside the cranium.

Padded rooms coupled with flag football have virtually eliminated concussions here at the Institute.

I don't know what the data says on CTE risk with young kids. My guess is that there isn't enough "force" at younger ages in physical contact/tackling to matter much if kids have on helmets. I'm saying that I question if there is any benefit in reducing risk by not letting them tackling and in pads before Middle School. The risk starts to occur as kids get bigger and stronger/more force and power behind the tackling. It seems all that Marion is doing is teaching kids to tackle at later ages (in Middle School) which is probably when the risk for CTE damage begins to occur, so the policy they have might actually be increasing the risk.
Only my guess though. I don't know what the literature says on this.

I have a hard time believing this. I was at Marion at age 7, and they had me in pads, all white, even had the guys in white coats that would occasionally rush in.

I don't think you can bring very many in because if the old guys are employed as teachers or inside school system its not like they are leaving their full-time jobs just because they don't coach anymore. You'd have to find a load of assistant coaches willing to move to a place and coach for a $2000 stipend or hope they get full time jobs. People always say clean house and bring in your own assistants but thats not really possible for most of SWVA jobs you are stuck with people who teach at the school or already work in the area.  It cannot be turned around quickly baring some influx or transfers or the ones who transferred out coming back because the JV and middle school teams had very little talent
