Lee was a bad hire from the get go.  Anyone who knows SWVA football knew that.  There is no excuse for quitting on a group of kids that have put their trust in you  I hate it for the kids b/c they had bought into him but they'll have better leadership the rest of the way.   Those kids have been running the wing T for the last 3 years.  I don't think it'll take to long to put a small version of it back in.    Wright has still been teaching the strength and conditioning program at Battle.  I've heard the off season program wasn't remotely as challenging as the past few years but I'm sure Wright has at least made up for some of it in class.         This team was in a rebuilding mode reguardless but I guarantee that Wright will have them competing their butts off for 4 quarters reguardless of the scoreboard.       Hate this for the kids but they're in better hands now.       I just hope that the administration makes a better hire the next time around.

I can remember a time when you would never hear a GC fan say they would get beat by any score. There used to be a lot of confidence in GC. Over the past 6 or 7 years I have heard players parents say GC would be lucky to stay within 20 points of this team or that team will beat GC like a drum. All of that said right in front of the players. There is no wonder why GC has lost some games over the past 2 years by record margins. I know players are not supposed to read these boards but I know for a fact they do. I just hope the very few fans that lack confidence don't take away theirs. I have not seen a GC team this fired up and ready since the 02 and 03 teams. I think we fans need to be just as fired up. We should expect nothing less than a win in any game. If GC does lose then work harder not to let it happen again. That goes for any fan or player of any school. The kids seem to be getting back to Gate City football. Now it's time for the fans to do the same!

I'm sorry, but I don't see this years GC team losing by 21 to Richlands. People say they're small, but they'll flat hit people in the mouth. They played toe to toe with Belfry, yet comments were made that they were the worst team there. I love the fact they're being taken lightly. I look for a close game either way. I love our chances.

I haven't looked at the video online because I don't want to see someone fataly struck by a racecar. I did see the video on Foxnews which stopped the footage just before Tony struck him. There is no doubt that Tony is a hot head and can be very aggresive at times but I can't imagine he intentionally tried to hit this you man. From what I have read and heard concerning the matter it sounds like the other driver made a dangerous move walking out so close to the cars on the track and that the car ahead of Tony almost hit him.
I think it was an accident plain and simple. Both he and Tony probably could have made better choices to avoid the accident but I don't think you can condemn Tony based so heavily on his past.
I think Tony made a wise move that showed consideration for the family by choosing not to race at Watkins Glen. I could forsee NASCAR instituting a rule in their series that prohibits drivers from walking toward cars on the track in the future to avoid an incident like this, in one of their series.

Just a sad situation and my heart goes out to the Ward family and to Tony.

Pardon me, but I don't give a flying whoop WTF you do. You aren't any better than any of the rest of us and your opinion holds no more value either, especially with me. Keep beating your chest though bro, maybe someone will bow to your inflated sense of self-importance and superiority.

I'm amazed that someone can watch that video clip and deduct so much from it. You guys ought to put such talent to use doing something productive for man-kind. The fact is this kid made a very poor decision by running onto a poorly lit racetrack wearing a black helmet and firesuit with RACECARS still operating at a reasonable rate of speed. Unfortunately, he paid for his poor decision with his life; hopefully someone will learn from this and not make a similar poor decision.

The video is doctored to add a Rev. This was not intentional. It's a 20 year old kid who got mad and ran down the track in front of cars. If Stewart was trying to hit him, he would hit him with his front tires. It was absolutely an accident. It's tragic, and it's truly upsetting, but a lifetime ban? No.

Yes, it will.  That's 3 fewer days to add plays, evaluate talent, and condition.  If Coach Williams isn't just using his 3 rest days early (a strategy I highly disagree with), it's going to create a bit of a bind.  In THE sport where coaches do everything possible to maximize time, shortening the preseason practices by 3 days is very bewildering.

A person doesent just choose administration, it takes a few years to get the credentials for the job. He probably decided he wanted to be a Principal while he was still in college getting his Bachelors degree.

If it was a matter of "the well drying up" I think he would have taken the Abingdon or Battle HC jobs.

I don't know about Altavista, but Essex doesn't have that many fans at their own home games (even in the state tournament), so this championship game crowd might not be nearly as big as it would be if it were Haysi vs Fort Chiswell.

I really hope my heart wins out.

I do think that if the weather is bad in Tappahannock today that helps Fort.

Good luck to all SWVA teams today and lets hope we have al three in Salem next week!

Offense:  Giles...the one-wing is a bitch to stop.

Defense:  Richlands...bend but don't break and very opportunistic.

Special Teams:  Richlands...as long as Ben Brown is healthy, the kicking game belongs to Richlands

Coach:  Richlands...Coach Mance, experience, championships, and knows the one-wing

Home field advantage:  Giles...one of the biggest home field advantages in the playoffs...however, Richlands will bring quite that crowd too.

Coach Mance will find a way for his team to stop, slow down the one-wing O of the Spartans enough to keep the Naders in it. However, it will come down to the final drive...last team to score wins...

    Richlands 42  Giles 41

My opinion...for Grundy to improve long term, and this is just my 2 cents...5 things that would really help:

-kicker training. Doug Blevins has a kicking camp and is considered one of if not THE best kicking instructors in the world...and he is right in our back yard and willing to help kids learn. I would be sending some of those 9th graders that will otherwise be standing on the sidelines doing nothing for years to come to learn how to kick and also long snap. Every year there should be at least 2 of the 9th graders trained and whoever was sent previously continued training. With work these kids who would otherwise never see the field would become assets to your team. We had to go for 2 every time this year because we really just can't kick an extra point. Last year we had the Mutter kid kicking (self trained with Blevins) and he was all state and we were a threat to score anytime we got near the 30 yard line. I can point to examples where that kid turned a game around and pretty much won the game or allowed Grundy to be in a position to win the game just with his leg.

-weight lifting - essential year round. We had all the football players lifting weights in 7th period gym year round. You can't wait until august to start lifting and expect any results. You get your linemen and you tell them in no uncertain terms that you don't lift then you don't play...I don't care who it is, no lift then no play. Lots of improvements could be made here, starts with the kids getting in there and putting in the time.

-speed and resistance training - right now it simply doesn't exist...and it needs to.

    - schedule - Look, I like playing the old SWD teams as much as anyone...but getting beat 60-0 is not putting more kids in the program. Short term I think you have to look at who you can beat and schedule the easy game, get your 10 wins and go 1 and out in the playoffs if you have to. I hate it's like that but I think if the kids know they are going to win some games I think more would stick with it and want to play...over time you could increase the level of competition once you get your program on more solid ground. For now, take the wins and get more kids involved. Strength in numbers. I'm not saying play a bunch of 1 win teams, but find some people you can at least compete with.

    - focus on getting the lower level kids out and actually playing and learning the game...tradition and work ethic starts young.

It's nothing else other than kids now are lazy. All the huge kids are walking the halls, playing call of duty, and eating chips. You wouldn't believe the kids who could be D1 prospects that walk the halls at all these high schools.

I'm surprised no one here is talking about this one, i realize the Tiger fight is the game of the year in SWVA and being played this week but for these two school this is a big one as well.

The winner gets a Hogoheegee championship, something that's been hard to win thanks to the folks up in Wytheville.

Holston has been winning by playing great in the second half this year. If they fall behing this week can they catch up?

Those of you who have seen these two teams play this season, what do you think?

To me Holston seems like the underdog so i'm going with Chilhowie, 34-21.

Wheeler WAS NOT fired. That incident was later discovered to be not true and Wheeler, upset that the school immediately sided with the player, decided he has had enough, and retired.

You don't know much about the school, yet felt qualified enough to make a claim that Coach Wheeler encouraged dirty play? Well I do know a lot about the program, and Coach Wheeler, and I can promise you that dirty play wasn't tolerated, nor was it coached or taught.

I think a few more fans could fit into that category, as has been witnessed recently.  I haven't seen any Gate City fans on here crying about turnovers, etc. and refusing to give credit where credit is due, but I have seen fans of other schools who have a loser chip on their shoulder doing exactly that.
