For those that havnt seen this a team in Texas took and belt and literally hit the team they just beat 77-0 on the ass during the post game hand shake and had an audio clip that went with it. Just like everything on social media it has gone viral and has made its way to SWVA. I know Rye Cove did it filmed it and posted it against Lee (not that I think an 8 point win qualifies as an ass kicking but whatever). Graham started to do it in the post game handshake against Marion but as far as I know it was stopped before they got enough video to post it. The team in Texas I think had to forfeit that game and I think there were some suspensions involved.

What do we think about this? I think we can all agree it is terrible sportsmanship. I think few will say "If you dont want that to happen dont get that ass beat". Will the VHSL drop punishment like Texas did? Is this a kids have gotten soft situations and they need to toughen up OR a coaches need to do a better job of teaching their players how to win with humility and not do every challenge they see on tic tok? Remember this same platform issued a challenge that had kids eat laundry detergent.

The VHSL will do nothing, and most coaches will do nothing. Some administrations will do "something" IF there is media involved. School systems don't care much about bad sports behavior, they just don't want to LOOK like they don't care.

If they get interviewed by a newspaper or news channel, they will step in and say "appropriate actions have been taken," but they won't say what those actions are by hiding behind privacy laws.

There's no excuse for this whatsoever, but it is the state of affairs right now. Very little accountability at any level these days.

I agree more and more we are teaching these kids that they can get away with anything. You see in the classroom and on the field and court. The adults involved have to do a better job of teaching values to these kids instead of this win at all cost mentality. I would rather my team lose a few games and grow up to be pillars of their community than when a state championship while acting like that. With that being said when these teams involved in this trend do not win it all you can point back to this and say this is why.

Solution.

1. All coaches shown the clips today by 5pm.

2. When tomorrow at 7am comes, if your kids engage in this, the kid is removed from the football team and you don't get your coaching bonus/stipend.

3. If it happens a second time, you are fired.

Will the above work or happen? Zero chance. Why? We live in a modern day Sodom where less and less people do the right thing or to put in other terms, moral relativism which is continuing to cripple the majority of institutions in the west (Western Europe, the US, Canada).

Want to know why the kids do it? It's not just about the coach not liking it or allowing it. That would have been the case 10 to 15 years ago. We are now in an age where deep down, internally, a decent amount of coaches actually LIKE IT. That's the real sickness.

As the old saying goes, it all starts at home. SO MANY kids aren't being raised by mom & dad any longer. It's grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins, other family members and the foster system. Then, of the kids being raised by their parents, a huge number of these have extenuating circumstances like drug & alcohol addiction, poverty and other socioeconomic hardships. Today's kids are treading water focusing all their energy to keep their head above it, so there's not much opportunity to learn "the right thing."

And when they don't have role models at home, they look elsewhere, to actors, sports figures and music figures. A vast majority of these people would not exactly be considered the moral center of society. It's a tough world out there for young people, and I don't see it changing anytime soon.

Wish I could have your gift to put it like that. I tried, but you write it way better. Absolutely spot on with everything you wrote in my opinion. What's happening is sadly, a symptom of a very sick society that is unfortunately and pessimisticlly, getting sicker.

Unfortunately, I see this every day. I've seen nearly every situation imaginable, and a few, I couldn't have imagined. I personally know a woman in her late 70s that's raising her granddaughter's friend's 10 yr old son because she's on drugs and nobody in his family wanted him. I know another lady around 60 that's raising her great niece and nephew, twins, once again because of drugs, and there was nobody else to take them.

I have numerous ties to area school systems and know people that work for social services. The stories are heartbreaking. These kids range from infants to 17 year olds.

I agree with the posts above concerning the causes and solutions. We certainly have our priorities mixed up.
When we discuss football, coaching, and results, it’s difficult to weigh the other values in proper context. The goal (winning) becomes more important than the process (hard work). I’m sure we have all seen it, where naturally-talented get by with worse behavior than everyone else, only to later end up in jail or in a bad spot later in life. A lot of times, the most talented comes from rough situations at home as stated earlier. This is where the challenge comes from being a good coach and person that is overlooked. The challenge of not compromising values and being successful is at an all-time high. Thanks to those coaches who are successful both on and off.  They are few and far between now.

I'm now an administrator at one of the middle schools in Charlotte and one of our kids did that this week at our game. The young man had to write one apology letter to the principal of that school and another letter to the team that our school played. He is also suspended for the next game.

Good stuff and I wish you would post more JG. I played against you in some hoops tournaments way way back in the day and that bunch from the Bluefields.

People are quick to point the finger at the coaching staff. I've been guilty of it myself but Union_Fan nailed it saying it starts at home. After a game the last thing on a coach's mind is that one of his players is going to be whipping another team in the handshake line with a towel. What are the chances that a 50+ year old coach is even aware of a Tik Tok trend such as this until it's too late.

I guess the flip side to saying that would be there are some coaches or coaching staffs you know dang good and well you better not even think about pulling such a stunt like that on.

Agree. But when coaches see it/know it’s happening it’s now their responsibility to address it.

Princeton did this exact thing to Tazewell during the handshake line. The next week they have numerous unsportsmanlike penalties against Winfield and have 2 of their most important players ejected and those two will have to miss their game against Woodrow Wilson due to their suspensions being upheld by the WVSSAC.

When things like this are not addressed early it will continue to escalate.

Spot on man. I understand Princeton is appealing the 2 kids out against Beckley, but will likely lose. WV doesn't mess around and those 2 losses are so big that Beckley (Woodrow Wilson) may actually beat Princeton and give them their first loss. Beckley has a pretty good football team up there this year. I hope Beckley beats Princeton also. Behave like an arse over and over, and a loss could serve them well. It likely would mean Princeton is traveling at some point to Bridgeport or Fairmont Sr in the playoffs if they get a loss. If....if they travel, it's huge. Princetons actions seem kind of small right now. They have the ability to actually effect whether they win a state title because it appears Princeton and Bridgeport and even Fairmont are very close in level if play and home field advantage could be the decisive factor come playoff time.

I agree with this 100%.  No way Collier knew this was going on.  Easy answer would be no cell phones allowed on the sidelines.  Things like this would not be occurring if nobody was recording it.

it is usually an injured player that records this kind of stuff because they are the ones with the cell phones on the side line

VHSL sent out an notification to all schools to address the issue. But, as said earlier nothing will be done

We will see. I think like anything else, some schools, ADs, and coaches will act on it and do the right thing and some will not.

I was told the appeal was already heard and denied so they will be without those two players against Woodrow.

WVSSAC is not very happy with Princeton athletics in general, per sources. They’re on thin ice.

As they should be.  I know we aren't the only ones with issues against them going back a few years.
