1) When the early whistle on the fumble happened Graham cried about it, pouted and argued. Richlands saw this and went right for the throat with the TD pass on the next play to Howie.
2) Richlands kept getting the ball to their best athletes, Graham didn't. Cousin may have had 10 carries.
3) Richlands made adjustments at half, Graham didn't.

This was a good call. Clearly aiding the runner. Clearly not called enough so I give the official props for making this call. It was the right call and it took guts.

I was there and the official blew his whistle ending the play. Clearly it was a mistake to blow the ball dead but once that is done, right or wrong, the play is over.

In WV there are only 3OT periods. If tied after the third OT the game is a tie. So some go for two to avoid a tie.

Honaker was 0-2 in 2010 losing to Lebanon and Richlands.
 
Last time they lost to both Russell schools was in 1991.

Btw...Graham's uniforms were the best looking uni's I've ever seen Graham wear. The only other disappointing part of the night besides Graham's secondary was how pitiful the Graham band was. That might be the worst band I've ever heard. For sure the worst GHS band ever. I know their numbers are down...but dang.

There will be 10,000 for this game with another 5,000 tailgating. The party starts around 10 a.m. Friday.  It's an event in and of itself. Except for the crowning of queens, etc. It really is both schools homecoming on the same night. It's a wonderful atmosphere. Come on over and spend the day at a Graham-Beaver game. You won't be the same after.
 
Lasts week "game" with Giles was not a game. It was a scrimmage. No one goes to scrimmages.

Andrew Lewis played an ineligible player in 1962. They weren't on probation, they had to forfeit every game.
 
Graham wasn't "selected" state champion. They had the highest point rating of any "Division I" school. Out of state losses did not count and you had to play a certain number of games vs Division I schools to qualify.  Graham earned the championship by the rules that were in place at that time.

At least Graham can say they play Bluefield every year win or lose. They don't drop them from the schedule or refuse to pick them up because they are afraid of losing like a few other local teams in the area I won't mention. 

There was a time when Bluefield was 3 to 4 times the size of Graham. But Graham put on their pads, laced up their shoes and went after the Beavers. They almost always lost and usually by a lot. Through the years Graham got a bit larger and Bluefield's enrollment is less than half what it used to be.  Bluefield wins more often than Graham but not as much as in the past. It is still the greatest rivalry around.

Having said that Bluefield's attendance at games other than Graham and Princeton has been very poor.

I've only missed one Union football game in 5 years. I've yet to hear anyone claim that Union has won a state championship in football. I believe that people in BSG and Appy are very proud of their football team and the new high school in general.
 
Union can be compared to the kid that comes from good stock. People anticipate the children of good parents, that are well respected and have many accomplishments, to also make something of themselves.
Being the "parents" of the Bears, Appy and PV had THEIR heyday. They did win many games, and several state championships. They also passed on a lot of tradition, pride, and expectations. Unfortunately, the trophies didn't come with all that.
 
Just like a child that must make their own way, create their own opportunities, and learn from their failures the Bears will always have that origin to look back on as an example of what great things THEY can achieve when hard work meets potential.
 
When two rivers merge together they get a new name, but the quality of the water remains the same.

Mount View did ok in football until the last ten years.  They actually had good baseball teams.  The exodus of almost all working class families is the real struggle in McDowell County. There actually are some jobs there but most who work there live in Bluefield, Princeton, Beckley and Tazewell. 
 
As a historian consolidations present a challenge. For football if 2 or more football schools consolidate then the football history for me starts anew. Ridgeview is a new school and they may pull on the fine histories of the schools in Dickenson County but no one is going to call them champions until the new school wins one or more. Clintwood's football championships were/are Clintwood's and not Ridgeview's.  Just as Appalachia and Powell Valley's championship do not belong to Union. Now that doesn't mean that the new school shouldn't look to the great history of the area and promote if they want to but no one is giving Union credit for any championships until they win one.
