What’s your biggest surprise of week 1? For me it was the thorough dismantling of Chilhowie by Marion.

    3-0 in Tazewell County!
Marion makes it 4-1 from the SWD (obviously, someone had to lose THS/VHS).

There's two schools of thought on this, and neither are wrong.
    First, there's yours....And I get it.
Second....Why put yourself in a high-risk turnover situation? We virtually never go under center. I've seen many GW teams even line up in victory formation to take knees out of the pistol or gun. And what's the difference in doing that or going under center just to turn around and hand it to a running back who is lined up 7 yards deep? I mean, we aren't going to sneak it from the 3

Lebanon just beat Honaker 19 to 13, so does that mean the Pioneers are now contenders in the region? I think people have underestimated the Pioneers,  but we will see as the season progresses.

You old timers absolutely kill me. The statement that you cant come off the ball in the spread like you do in a 1905 offense is just ignorance on your part. Now I do understand that most of the teams in the lower classifications do not run spread and are plenty successful Riverheads is a prime example of that and to a certain extent you do have to have some speed for it to work. When you run the spread football turns into a numbers game. It gives you options. If you are less talented than another team it gives you a fighting chance. If you put 11 guys near that ball the defense will do the same and that turns into are my 11 better than your 11. If your 11 are better than go for it.
Now with that being said you have to be a damn good coach and know the ends and outs of your offense in order to take advantage of said number. If you throw 4 receivers out there for the hell of it with no scheme then you are dead in the water. @SwvaOG brings up a great point your best athlete has to be a Q if he cant hurt teams with his legs you are in trouble.
Me and @redtiger have had good conversations about this before and I love talking ball and will do it all day. Personally I dont like the 3 yards and a cloud of dust mentally its boring to me and easy to prepare for. You want the opposing DC to not be able to sleep at night because your OC can take advantage of numbers. Richlands issue is not the spread. Sometimes you just dont have the kids or your not putting them in the best numbers advantage possible

Yes that is the best way to go when your Q can run the ball. It gives you an extra blocker and the ability to zone read someone to death.

If unions secondary is as rough as I have heard on this board expect Coach Carroll to take full advantage of that with a wide open passing attack. It could end up being a shoot out if see can keep pace and Union stalls out self inflicted penalties or fumbles. If it is one one score game late in the 4th and Lee has the ball with a chance to win I would be very nervous as a Union fan.

It isn’t hard to shift the pass spread to a spread to run offense.  Oregon did this to great success the last 15 years or so.  Everyone assumes spread is a pass oriented offense, which, it often isn’t.  The concept of spreading the field and getting numbers for the RB and QB is just as dangerous as a power running game.  The caveat is that you have to be creative with your blocking scheme (using a Bash concept, example).  Additionally you absolutely need an athletic QB.  If you don’t have those two things it will be hard to run.  The SEC and some of the other Power 5 have adapted double teams and ISO with spread concepts to make a power spread.  Good spread teams make great use of the versatile H back roll.  The H back roll can be lethal if the kid can also catch the ball.
Perhaps Mance fell in love with the passing aspect too much.  Perhaps the run blocking scheme wasn’t as effective.  Not sure.  But I will say, you absolutely can run it in SWVA if you buy in and have the staff to coach it.  Hell, RichRod designed a lot of it because he had smaller, less athletic kids in his early coaching days.  And I’ll take it further…a simple RPO scheme can make it hell on a defense…especially one only geared to stop the run.  I’d be remiss if I didn’t call out the absolute need of your WRs to hold blocks in space.  A couple of great blocking WRs is deadly in a spread.

The Air raid wins out in this one. 1A schools are not use to seeing the passing attack that Honaker is going to bring to this game. Tiller has put in a lot of work in the summer to get this thing humming and its only going to get better with time. I agree Honaker may be the 1D front runner and they will pass their way to victory in this one

3 straight losing season has really pissed you off.... Great talent with little depth means you are one injury away from your season going to hell. That does not reflect the coach though. Tazewell was in the dumps 4 years ago and its hard to get kids out when you are not good. But hats off to Coach Harris because he was able to use that talent to wins some games and now he has a roster of 50 and a JV for the first time in years. One injury wont kill them this year and the young kids get to play against players their own age. I agree Tazewell is moving in the right direction and that bulldog doesnt seem as scared of what is now just an F1 Tornado that use to be an F5.

I would say for the same reason Northwood took Marion off the schedule a few years back and will most likely be off next season. Lee being a larger class 2 school and Thomas Walker being a smaller class 1 school does not really help either school to play each other. Lee should win 9 out of 10 years and Thomas Walker might walk away with enough injuries to screw the rest of the season. They have played 8 times and Lee has won all of them by an average score of 42-11. It really does not benefit either team to play in the regular season.

I have not heard a word about the Chilhowie/Grundy scrimmage so I have no idea what Chilhowie has but I read on here Tazewell had their issues vs radford. This should be a great tune up game for Tazewell because the top 5 athletes on the field should be wearing green

Graham is the clear favorite and its not close regardless of their skill positions they have the best line on both sides of the ball in the district.
2-5 could go anywhere though each team in that group has their pros and cons
Tazewell- probably has the most coming back with Harris and Creasy but until I see consistent line play out of them and some sort of run game I will still question their ability to win the big game. Very talented and high numbers compared to recent years. If anyone can knock off Graham its them IMO but they have to play a perfect game. You also have to wonder how they handle the success from the last few years. Do they have a taste of winning and they know what it takes and keep it going or do they get complacent.
Richlands- They are a polar opposite of Tazewell. Traditional great line play but they lack a truly explosive play maker.  Webb and Simmons are gone and they are going to rely heavily on Brown and the run game. If that gets going It may be the first winning season since Mance. If not it could be another long year for big blue nation.
VA high- Can they replace the production of Stevie. For the past 4 years their offense has been put the ball in Stevie's very capable hands and get the hell out of the way and that has worked out for them. Now all the pressure falls on Brody Jones and Poku. Brody is a man child and Poku can fly can make plays to keep them in a lot of games. Defense was a weak spot for them last year if they are more sound on that side of the ball and find a run game so they can air it out they might be in good shape.
"Candy Canes"- Last few years have been a struggle but one thing that Marion has going for them that is an advantage is they did not lose a single play maker from last year. These guys also have another year to grow under their belt. New coach, new system, and maybe a new mind set. If they can build some momentum early in the season they could be dangerous. If they sweep Chilhowie, Northwood and Grayson and slipt or play Central and GC close they could be 4-1 3-2 going into the Abingdon game full of confidence and starting to gel they could surprise one of the teams above them. Or they could crash and burn who knows but this district has to potential to be very interesting the last 4 weeks with the 2-5 teams fighting for seeding or a playoff birth.
