The Graham-Gate City state semifinal game at Tazewell Middle School in 2018 is one that stands out to me. Mac McClung scored 42 points that night while Gate City punched its ticket to Richmond. I was on the call for NFHS that night. TMS was filled to the brim.

These notes are from message of 12/5/21 my pastor preached.  I thought for those who celebrate the birth of Jesus it would be a blessing in this most Holy Season.

"Three Amazing Gifts Given To Jesus"
Most gifts that we give or receive are for the moment.  The gold, frankincense and myrrh were given to Jesus by the wise men, but they were for mankind as well.  These gifts given weren't just for the birth of Jesus, but had significance in his death as well.  The Old Testament tells you somebody's coming, the New Testament  tell's you, he's here.
Gold -  is given to a King (1 Kings 6: 21-22)  The gold represents redemption overlaid on the altar, in the temple Solomon built. Before God calls you to a platform, he will call you to the altar first.
Frankincense is sap dried from a living tree which dies.  You cannot get sap out of the tree unless it is pierced.  The first part of the sap isn't collected.  It holds impurities.  The second part, when collected, dries like a teardrop.  Jesus cried, "I'm not crying for a religious war, but for Godly peace."  The frankincense afterwards is crushed, and then  sold for incense, the smell.  The priests in the temple always burnt  incense around the altar for healing.
Myrrh the third gift  represents Jesus being anointed at birth, because one day he would be  'high priest."  (Luke 4:16-19)  In the New Testament myrrh was used as an embalming oil.  A medicine to ease the suffering of people crucified.  They offered Jesus wine mingled with myrrh to ease the pain, but he refused.  (Mark 15:23)  Jesus knew he had to suffer with sin and all sickness.
The wise men gave gifts to celebrate Jesus birth.  What is your gift?  Who you are is God's gift to you; what you do is your gift to God.  Will we bring to this Holy Season a sweet savor?  May it be so!!!
    AMEN

    Wonderful message for Thanksgiving!!!

    Notes from my Pastor's message
"One More Day" ... Psalm 118:24
If we don't appreciate today, we live in regret or wish for tomorrow.  We live in the past of yesterday.  TODAY is what we have...REJOICE IN IT.  We are in a rush for TODAY to be over, because we want tomorrow to be better.
Jesus didn't give us the day of his return, because he wants us to be ready TODAY, not get ready tomorrow.  There will never be a President elected who can create a better TODAY for you.  Only Jesus can do that.
Matt 6:11 says "Give us THIS DAY our daily bread", not tomorrow.
One of the greatest weapons of warfare Christians have is THANKSGIVING.  "Enter into his gates with THANKSGIVING, and into his courts with praise, be THANKFUL unto him, and bless his name. Psalm 100:4
Sadly, we have lost the power of today.  We miss 365 days to THANK God where we are, where we're going, and who he is.  God doesn't have hypothetical grace, which we tend to live in..."what will happen tomorrow?  God says, I've seen it all, been through it all and brought them through.  He'll bring you through.  There is an enemy that attacks flesh, but he cannot  attack our God.
TODAY should be about "progress, not perfection."  If the enemy can get you to 'UNTHANKFULNESS, your day feels hopeless.  How do you handle imperfect days?  Do you throw it away?  God made the world in 6 days, because he wanted mankind to see "progress, not perfection."  What victory other than being alive makes your day?  When you know what something is, instead of what you've been told, you celebrate it.
TODAY when you woke up, your yesterday is over.  You have TODAY to rejoice in.  If you anchor in death or what's wrong, you take that trophy from the past, and bring it into your TODAY to disappoint you.
Groceries are going up, but they aren't higher than Jesus.
Heb 3:13 "Encourage, strengthen, lift up one another DAILY."
One more day... why not TODAY!!!!
    HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL!!!

From my alma mater, Richlands, I think I would put these four:
    1. Mike Compton--went on to be a Consensus All-American at WVU. Started at Center for three years there. Lombardi Award Finalist, named a first team All-American by numerous outlets, 2x First Team All Big East. Third Round NFL Draft pick. Blocked for Sanders in Detroit. Won SB XXXVI and XXXVII in New England and played for the Jacksonville Jaguars before embarking on a high school and collegiate coaching career.
    2. Devon Johnson--at Richlands, Johnson in his career finished with 457 carries 4,340 rushing yards, 9.5 yards per carry, 63 rushing touchdowns, 23 receptions, 399 yards receiving, six receiving touchdowns to go along with 216 tackles, 47 TFLs, 16 sacks, 10 FFs, 1 INT--this was at a time when the starters at Richlands were pulled after the first drive in the third quarter on a lot of nights. At Marshall, Johnson rushed for 2,373 yards which ranks ninth all time at Marshall. 25 rushing touchdowns, which is 12th all time at Marshall. Johnson averaged 7.78 yards a carry (305/2,373)--the best in Thundering Herd history. Johnson had six games in which he rushed for 150 or more yards. (12 at 100 or more). Johnson rushed for 100 or more yards in seven consecutive games and three consecutive games where he had 150 or more yards--the best in Marshall history. Johnson holds the single game rushing record at Marshall where he finished the 2014 contest with FAU in 2014 with 272 rushing yards. Johnson's 2014 season saw him rush for 1,767 yards which is second most in Marshall history for a single season. Johnson also finished sixth in the country in rushing in 2014 (behind some guys you may have heard of Melvin Gordon, Tevin Coleman, Ezekiel Elliott, Donnel Pumphery and Jay Ajayi). Devon was a first team Conference USA selection and a semifinalist for the Doak Walker Award. Devon went on to sign with the Carolina Panthers as an undrafted free agent where he stayed on with the Panthers for the 2016 season before being waived in 2017.
    3. Matt McGlothlin--Matt was a first team all SWD selection on offense and defense, and a firs team all state selection. McGlothlin walked onto the Tennessee program in 2002 and then played in all 12 games for the Vols in 2003 where he even started two contests. In 2005, McGlothlin saw significant playing time but in 2006 McGlothlin saw his most productive where he finished with 15 tackles. Matt signed a UDFA deal with the Kansas City Chiefs and then spent some time in the Arena League with the Orlando Predators.
    4. Terry Wess--A 1969 graduate of Richlands High School that started for three years as a QB at RHS, who had an offer to go to Marshall on a football scholarship. His number is retired by the program. Wess was a longtime assistant coach at Richlands and was the head coach in 1993 where he led the Blues to a 7-3 record.

These are the four I would put on the list. The Honorable Mentions would have to consist of: Caleb Jennings, Justin McCracken, Austin Fuller, John Luke Asbury, Billy Cranwell, Brannon Breeding, Jeremy McCommons, Sandy Rogers, Bradley Strong, Taylor Wade, Josh Hess, Cody Thomas, Brad Salyers, Timmy Brown. And others. I am sure I am leaving out some names.

This really is sad news. Those Council teams in the late 90s and early 2000s were incredible. The community pride that the Council area has for the Cobras basketball team is remarkable. I attended a game a few years back when the Cobras were struggling to compile a couple wins together. However, the stands were packed in comparison to some schools big time playoff games. I am hoping this is a brief hiatus and that Council is soon able to return to the hardwood.

    1. Schedule a Marion-JSB series.
    2. Call Steve Wright and beg him to come back.
Incidentally, this advice could also apply to Marion.
