dshreeves reacted to sixcat in Championships
I don't believe consolidation is always the answer. Ask Carroll County.
Personally, I believe Class 1 should be further reduced to those schools with enrollments under 350 or so regardless of the number of schools that entails. The remaining schools can be evenly divided into 4 more classifications. There isn't a ton of difference between a school with 450 students and a school with 650 students. But a school with under 300 students trying to compete with a school with 450 students is another story altogether. Riverheads and Galax can compete against Class 2 schools. In my humble opinion, either would have had an excellent shot at a Class 2 championship this season.

Agreed all around.
A hard number definitely needs to be set for 1A, and 6 classifications is probably really unnecessary, 5 would do it.

dshreeves got a reaction from Gridiron60 in 2019 VHSL State Championship Updates
It was without a doubt questionable. I was there as a neutral observer just to enjoy a couple of great games and to these neutral eyes, Riverheads did get the benefit of the calls in question each and every time. The roughing the punter call on the partially blocked punt was terrible.
Galax played with a ton of heart and should be very proud of their showing yesterday. Congrats on a great season!

5 game post season is too long. If you make the championship game, you've played a whole extra half of a season. I say start the season a week earlier and cut the playoffs to 4 games...championship games could be played on the last weekend in November. Don't get rid of the bye week, and don't allow a bye week before the fifth game of the year. That way kids can "refresh" a bit, especially if they are heading into post-season play.
But that's too logical for the VH$L to figure out....

It was a WILD game. Very cold, windy, and snow on the ground. Neither team could do much, one of the best games I've ever witnessed!

I was at the 2-0 Holston/JIB game at Emory & Henry. It's one of the most memorable games I have ever attended. A rematch would be a good story, but like previous posters I think it's unlikely too.
I doubt I will ever attend another game that ends 2-0.
And thanks to Union_Fan for the link to the news story...

dshreeves reacted to Ryan4VT in Radford @ Richlands
Biggest game of the season for Richlands. Richlands will be favored in 4 of their last 5 games. Get this W on home turf and 6-4 is a very good possibility. That’s 4ish seed territory with our schedule. And if you steal one from a Graham at home, could be a 3 seed.
Beating Radford at home is a MUST if the Blues want a chance at a home playoff game.
Gonna be a great game.

You must not really keep up with football. Since Richlands renewed this series Bluefield only leads 4-3. Dont see how that is taking an L every year.

Classic Big 6 match up. The best conference that could never be. Tennessee High, Sullivan East, Sullivan Central, Virginia High, John Battle, Abingdon. The problem was two states, two different sets of rules. Back in the day the student count was equal between the schools.

Vikings... BIG. Maybe not as much as what Pulaski County beat them by but pretty close.

I came away from the Central game more impressed with Central than I feel comfortable admitting LOL There Young skill players are more than just good athletes they are good football players and kept fighting when they went down by 3 TDs 2 different times (alot of experienced teams allow that kind of thing to snowball)
I am not sure how the Central D will do vs a team that wants to go right at them like Union or possable GC but VHS does not bring that type of game to the table.
I look for Central to win this one easily

Abingdon going against a tough Pulaski team + Coach Mance with a extra week to prepare = a Richlands W

Bunch of good ones. In addition to what's already mentioned. Giles vs Narrows. Narrows fans I'm sure feel this may be there best chance and they will have some fans for sure.
Ridgeview vs Gate City. I wouldn't be surprised if this is closer than many think.
If your willing to drive far enough, Radford and Gretna play at Radford. In spite of Glenvar and Appo, the two best teams in Region C may be playing Friday night and a reasonable chance our Region winner ends up meeting one of these two. That will be a good game over there.

Honaker
no offense to either team but they got TS and RC off schedule and added two stronger teams. Not a cake walk schedule IMO: Battle and Lee both 2A, Castlewood and eastside both on the better half of the Cumberland district, honaker and Hurley are both solid and physical teams every year. Wins don’t dictate the challenge a team poses. Look at the rest of 1D team for team these schedules aren’t that different.

Bullitt Park? Yes, many times. Including PV/App '97. Which I believe will be the best high school game I will ever attend. As for Blues/Bears? I haven't. Although I did attend Richlands/PV games in the past. For this week though I still think Chilhowie/JIB will be a more competitive game but all the fun happens Friday night and we shall see.

No problem whatsoever, just talking football.
I love Bullitt Park too, although living in Bristol doesn't allow me to get over that way very often.
Having played in that game in '97, it's no wonder you have such passion for the place.
