This is one of the reasons jobs continue to leave the USA in droves. Until we get over to the entitlement mentality this county will continue to struggle. It has been stated many times; employers are unable to find workers that are team players and are willing to work for an honest day's pay. It starts with a word that's not always easy to say to your flesh and blood but is most necessary for proper development, NO. Failure and not always having things the way you want them, when you want them can be a great motivator if nurtured properly.
We also need to remember it is not important to be a subordinate's friend when you are in an authority position. Make the tough decisions and stand by them. When I look back to many of my "old school" coaches and teachers, that I may have disliked at the time, I today realize how much I learned from these great people.

I've stayed out of the spot light because I didn't want to take away for the complete domination of my Falcons.  I've been busy spreading my business around with all my ladies and haven't had time to entertain you bruisers on here.  Speaking of bruising, hows those bruises holding up Gate City after we embarrassed you?  Haha  I bring up Gate City because there's some talk that you want Randy Reid to come bail you out of the mess you're in right now.  Didn't you know that poaching was illegal?  Don't come cry the blues after you passed him up and didn't see the potential that ABINGDON FALCONS did!  Do you know what we do to Falcon poachers? . . . . . We take them behind the wood shed for old fashioned arse whipping!  My advice, leave Randy ALONE!  Next topic,  can this board get anymore politically correct?  I mean its good luck guys, don't get mad if we win, wheres a good place to eat, hope to play hard . . . . . . whatever happened to, "Hey, the Falcons are coming and we're going run through your town like Sherman did Atlanta?" You heard me right!  The Falcons are Coming!  "Fear the Beak!"  That's whats happening to our society.  No one tells em like it is and the next thing you know Iran has a nuclear deal.  While others sit quietly and watch the cars go by.  Well, I'm not going sit around and watch Gate City poach our Falcon!! No Sir, that won't happen on Falconman's watch.  I'll leave you with these two thoughts:  No to Iran Nukes;  No to Falcon Poaching!!!!

PS:  Tired of hearing about Union.  Union you don't want any of my Falcons!

    Go Falcons

I feel your pain. I only made it about three minutes into the first quarter. Play-by-play announcer has no idea about what is going on on the field, There is no way to tell who carries the ball or makes the tackle. When the color announcer tries to explain he is shouted down.
Gotta love home town radio in SWVA and NETN. Message boards and Twitter is a lot less stressful way to keep up.

Sadly this is not only the case in regard to sports but in politics as well. The voices and opinions of SWVA fall on deaf ears because the powers-that-be do not fear us at the polls. There is not enough population to make a difference and more are leaving everyday. It looks like consolidation is a word we will be hearing more as well due to the aging of area facilities. Get used to it.

Happy Thanksgiving to all who follow this site.  In our lives, busy or whatever, we need to step back and not only count our daily blessings, but lift  a heartfelt prayer to our creator.  I know that all blessings flow through him.  His word says that "every good and perfect gift is from the Father above, who changes not."  Sometimes when we receive a blessing from the Father we are more caught up in the gift then the giver; and sometimes we are upset when we don't receive what we have asked for.  I think that is the key to being truly thankful to God.  If we are only asking, are we really seeking God's will for our life?  Whereas, if we are praying we are more aware of him and what he knows is best for our life.

May all be blessed with a bountiful table and appreciation to those who have cooked that you may be full.

Cool stuff, indeed. To clarify something that was mentioned on the other thread, the combination of Sugar Grove High School with Marion was "technically" a consolidation, rather than an absorption. Sugar Grove High School was consolidated with the old Marion High School, creating the new Marion Senior High School. In fact, as I understand it, the word "Senior" was added to the name for the sole purpose of appeasing Sugar Grove community members, ensuring that it was different school. The new school was built and the old Marion High School became Marion Junior High, now Marion Middle. There was quite a bit of backlash from old timers in the Grove, because while it was a consolidation from a technical standpoint, it was handled more as an absorption, with the school retaining the "Marion" name, as well as the Scarlet Hurricane moniker, the goat as a mascot, the Marion fight song, all the cheers, and most of the traditions of Marion High. In fact, Marion's primary cheer still refers to itself as "M-H-S", and the words to the fight song say, "We'll win this game for 'Marion High'". Obviously you can see how this would have offended some of the older folks in the Grove, who still remembered a very intense basketball rivalry between the Canes and the Leafs before VHSL Hall of Fame Coach Charlie Harkins began coaching for Marion, and Sugar Grove could no longer stay competitive.

Before the consolidation of Marion and Sugar Grove, there was another high school in Smyth County that was absorbed by Marion in Atkins. I believe that the Atkins High School Bulldogs were green and white, but don't quote me on that.

I'm not completely sure about the mascots for Liberty Hall and Damascus, although I am familiar with both schools, as the school buildings are fixtures in their respective communities. Liberty Hall has fallen into quite a state of disrepair, being used to store hay. It's really a shame because it's a gorgeous building and quite a point of pride for the community of Lodi. Upon researching Damascus High School, it's easiest to find by looking for references to "The Rock School", a very common nickname for the school. I was also able to find a picture of the Damascus High baseball team from the 20s at this address: http://www.vacreepertrail.us/images/smith06.jpg

I'm not 100% positive on this, but I believe that Glade Spring High School were the Rebels, the nickname taken by Patrick Henry after consolidation. I can remember my grandfather telling stories about playing basketball versus Glade back in the 40s at Emory & Henry, and the stands emptying onto the court after the officials called a disputable technical against Glade. Of course, if you listened to any of my grandfather's stories, apparently every athletic competition that he ever competed in ended in a big fight. He had been ejected from the famous Marion/Wytheville football game of 1949, three minutes before the stands emptied onto the field, killing a drunk who fell off the back of the bleachers. It caused the VHSL to ban Marion and Wytheville from playing each other in football, which continued until 2011.

It's not the current generation's fault. They are only an image of the example set before them. Start by looking in the mirror and stop blaming the kids. It's a trend that was started a couple generations ago and now we are reaping the results. Hard times and hard work build good character and work ethic. It can not be coddled into existence. Just look at the view of most of this generation. "Ask not what you can do for your country but what you country can do for you." You are owed nothing just for existing. Only hard work should be rewarded. Ask many employers what they have to deal with just getting people to show up every day to give an honest day's work for an honest day's pay. This is a result of the things that start with activities such as sports. It is the same as missing practice, not respecting the coaches authority or decisions, breaking the law and school/team rules and then being allowed to play Friday night because our precious reputation as a football power house is at stake. We get what we ask for.

I can kinda' see why you apologized.  The kid did not seek or ask for a critique.  Like you said, this isn't college or the NFL.

BUT, do his parents also get upset and call the principal when his English teacher critics his research paper and makes suggestions on how to improve it?  My advice, grow thicker skin and ignore message boards if they are upset by comments posted on them.
