In 1929 Graham was referred to as the "Panthers". In 1931 through 1934 they were the "Bears". The first reference to G-Men is in 1935.4 points -

whoooeee, thereis so much chest thumping on that other "YANKEE BOARD", you know the other guys....to hear them talk APPOMATTOX has already won the STATE and the rest of us are playing for second.I will tell you this, last year I thought UNION could play with APPO....wrong. I may be wrong but I think whomever wins region D will also win state, both GRAHAM and UNION have good TEAMS and sometime a TEAM is better than the sum of its players. I know the GRAHAM people want to win , but damn it I want APPOMATTOX TO HAVE TO RIDE AND RIDE AND RIDE to the real southwest va to the mnts and meet us HILLBILLIES at the PARK , where champions are crowned and the magic of BULLITT helps the home team win3 points -

We came to Bluefield in 2012 and then you all came to the park in 2015. So maybe its just 2 teams that don't care for each other. Are you planning on making the trip GMan if so I can show you a true HAMMER. Can't miss it.2 points -

Not much to say. Our draw sucked. Would have liked to have seen us get an opening round win, but it is not in the cards. Will still be some great experience that will pay off down the road. Will expose our weaknesses, kids will play in front of an amazing crowd in a big arena, and will give us some humility.2 points -
Prayers for the young man either way. Hate that part of the game. All the hearsay talk and stats aside, everyone be safe in your travels to the Park. Looking forward to meeting anyone that comes and hangs out with us before the game, regardless of what town your from or who you want to win.2 points

Thanks for the info @GMan and @bluefield researcher. That’s cool how it happened. Wish wise county hadn’t lost coal and our numbers dropped. The old LPD was fun and the history behind those schools were priceless to us. Thanks again for sharing.1 point

This is only the 7th edition of Union High School football but I think the 2017 Team is the most fundamentally sound group of Bears so far. James Mitchell deserves the accolades he receives but I think excellent blocking and tackling has propelled Union to a 12-0 record. The 2015 team had a little more flash & style but this year’s team is just plain solid. A friend’s son who plays for a rival school summed up the distinction. After the game against Union in 2015 we were tired. After the game this year we were sore. I’ve been saying that the 2015 Bears reminded me more of the great PV teams and 2017 reminds me more of the great Appalachia teams. No matter the outcome Saturday - it has been a good season for football fans in Big Stone & Appy!1 point

I don’t care who the coach is, Rye Cove started the year with 19 bodies and were outmanned in most every game they played. The best anyone could realistically hope for would be winning a max of 4 games, regardless who was on the sidelines. If they won 6, it would be time to get out of the way and let ‘em tear down the goal posts.1 point -

JI Burton @ Chilhowie
Ryan4VT reacted to IRISH-FAN18 for a topic
I think everybody's being way too generous to Burton here. They definitely got better and found their mojo towards the end of the season, and into the playoffs, but their no where near Chilhowie's level. Chilhowie wins handily by 20-30 points.1 point -

Good test for our team. Highly doubt we are even close. But if we want to make a run at a state title then these types of opponents are going to help us in the long run. We don’t play in the Arby’s for wins (we would like to win though). We play in the Arby’s to get ready for what we could see up the road the in playoffs. North Meck is by far better than anything 2A Virginia has to offer.1 point -

He's a heck of a player. I'll suggest for you Graham guys to check out our linebacker #45 Tanner Kennedy. Heck of a player and sometimes becomes the D coordinator.1 point -
I thought it would be interesting to compare stats for all 4 common opponents. Not really sure that it indicates anything, but it's cool to see them side by side. Hope this chart makes sense. All stats compiled from BHC and the Richlands/Union game is from the playoffs. I figured that the Richlands that Graham saw more closely resembled the one Union saw in the playoffs due to the personnel changes. 2017 SWVA Coach of the Year
Liam McPoyle reacted to Hokie Bound for a topic
Must agree with IRISH-FAN 18. Chilhowie has an outstanding group of athletes and people saw this coming when they destroyed Abingdon, Gate City, Marion, George Wythe and everyone else they played under eighth grade head coach Matt Snodgrass. Problem is they couldn't beat anyone of equal talent this year. The Warriors are a big fish in a small pond in Region D as it is as weak as I can remember. Going into the playoffs very few people saw anyone staying within 28 points of them. Not taking anything away from Chilhowie just not any competition in Region D.1 point -
2017 SWVA Coach of the Year
Liam McPoyle reacted to Plywood_King for a topic
They are, and there is something to be said about about being able to take care of business, but if you look at their schedule, I don't think Chilhowie beat anyone that folks didn't predict they would beat in the preseason. Chilhowie's a pretty dang good 1A team, but I think most people knew that they would be, and the best item on Robinson's resume this year is that his team beat the teams that they should have. Again, there's something to be said about doing that for the entirety of a season, but I don't know if that's a coach of the year resume outside of the Hogo.1 point -
Galax @ Narrows
Liam McPoyle reacted to Deleted Account for a topic
It all depends on which Galax shows up. The Galax that shows up 80% of the time will score the clinching TD in the 2nd quarter. The Galax that showed up against Grayson loses by 7.1 point -
