Years ago Bulldogs and Tigers were two of the most popular mascots but both have fallen out of favor. Eagles seems to lead the way, along with Patriotic names for schools but that's changing too now. Navy/Orange bears is wildly popular : Bland County, Union, Grainger County TN

I smell failure in the form of a pisspoor effort by the powers that be in their ability to take the advice of the local population which is obviously Overwhelmingly in support of a mascot related to the coal/rail industry.  They gave ZERO cares evidently. If you are the 2 or 3 people that had the final call/decision in choosing thr mascot on Buchanan County, you failed in your leadership duties because the voice of the local population was tossed out.

Bingo and again.....ask an opened ended question about mascots on a survey in which there is nothing to pick from and you have to fill in the blank and you will 99 percent of the time come up with some generic animal.
What I suspect happened in Buchanan County? Overehelmingly, most people are in favor of a mascot related to coal. The problem with a fill in? You get 8 votes and 6 of the 8 are mascots related to coal but are not the exact same...for example...coalminers and coaldiggers and 2 of those 8 votes are for Eagles. What does the dumb dumb do who counts? He completely misses the point that over half the people are wanting something related to coal and just tallies the vote and "Eagles" wins with 2 votes. So, the poor leadership comes in how the survey is designed, delivered, and counted. It's laziness and ignorance to basic statistics which means....leadership failure.

I also think the mascot should have been related to the coal industry in some way.  If they wanted an animal mascot, maybe go with something Elk related since they are actually in the area.  The odds of seeing an Eagle are about as good in Buchanan County as this transition going smoothly.  This is only the first step that will be scrutinized.  Next will be the building, money allocation, disdain from Hurley residents, etc.  Gonna be interesting.

Well, as Meatloaf famously said “Two outta three ain’t bad.”  Southern Gap and color scheme are good….Eagles is completely uninspired and lazy.
It would be a travesty to not play homage to the coal industry or, at least, local fauna…..bucks…or thundering herd (Elk mascot).

And, IMHO, they are SWD all the way with a protected yearly crossover with Ridgeview.

Eagles is an absolute stupid name.  They had a chance to be creative and mailed it in.  I’m assuming some stuff suits and desk jockeys came up with this.

Damn, pick something from the coal industry…miners, high/ low wallers, black diamonds…something.  I had visions of a black and gold trimmed team that would blow a steam whistle and the crowd would yell “Roll Coal!!” when they made a key first down or TD.  Now….a shrieking eagle will be played over the PA system. Bastards!!!!

Sad to hear.  Prayers that Coach Tiller turns his life to his Creator.  No personal accolades, no accomplishments fills the void that God does.    He anchors us daily, not just on the mountain top, but in the valleys when people disappoint, situations rock our lives.
I think there is already a great Richlands alum on the Tiger staff, that is worth considering, Shane Wicks.  The upcoming players know him, he knows the system and he can bring continuity in this time.
    Prayers for all. 🐯🙏

This is sad! Sad for the man and the kids that it effects and really the whole community really. I have several family members who have fought addiction and all have overcame them but you have to fight like hell to do it! It is a shame that a person puts his need for drugs or alcohol ahead of the example he is trying to set, but it's an addiction and you can't fix it until you come to the end of yourself and start trusting and believing in things bigger than you! Faith can move mountains but it won't if you don't want to get better! Get better first and worry about football later!

The Tazewell poster was likely joking/just poking the Gmen fans. When I read his post, I took it as 50-50 as being a real sinkhole vs joking. Either way, I would still want to be darn sure and the people in charge of doing/planning the Turf at Graham might have already done a geotechnical study. I think they run about 4 to 5 grand. Wouldn't surprise me if one was already done.

I mentioned this is one of these threads a while back. I remember when Graham had the issues around 1990ish with a sink hole. I don't know anything about rules related to geotechnical studies or regulations on those things, but I do have enough common sense to know that Graham should take whatever means possible to be darn sure or as sure as you reasonably can be that there are no sink hole issues with the football field.

Given the significance of the project, no idea why there wouldn't have been a geotechnical study of that area given its history. Entire section of the north wing of the school fell in during the 1990s. I worked on the remediation of that project.

What Galax did and continues to do is more than impressive. I've said it on here many times over the years because it's remarkable how a tiny town with what is it..... a 4 square mile radius or 2x2 (something crazy like that) does what it does in athletics. It's no joke in soccer either.

Lee County and Giles County. Two of the common misnomers for both are that they are named County. The perfect setup is 2 schools in 1 county with 1 schools name for the county (Giles and Lee) and then both have smaller schools within the county (Thomas Walker and Narrows). It was similar with Bland on occasion back in the day. The old Bland High was occasionally referred to as Bland County when it was only Bland High and the county had the smaller school, Rocky Gap.
I'm serious, I don't know of any school in VA or NC that has the name of County while also having another public school within that same county. As long as Council stays open, the name Buchanan County is going to be very difficult to get. What could happen? The name will be Buchanan High without the "County' and whenever Council finally submits and closes, Buchanan High will become Buchanan County High.

Va needs to get NORMAL. Do county consolidated schools like West VA. The state many of us poke at for being so called "backwards" is anything BUT backwards regarding how they do their HS athletics and High Schools. Council could go to Honaker. Hurley could go to Ridgeview (if closer to it, my geography may be off). My point is.....in rural areas, don't limit a HS to one county. WV understood this year's ago and its served them well.

I've said this for years.  They have to be lenient with the county lines.  Look at Castlewood...just a few miles from Eastside.  Let Council merge with Honaker.  If your home is considerably closer to another school you should be available for a waiver.

I was in Amonate two weeks ago.  About half the houses are gone now...maybe more......not a kid in sight.  Now, I remember as a kid when that place was crawling with wiry, mean-ass kids that were just ready to put on a football field.  I was surprised to find out that some of the Bandy houses are now zoned to go to Tazewell.  That is a ridiculous drive, especially considering Richlands is 30-35 minutes away.
Amonate was a great coal camp back in the day...had its own theater, school, bus stop....meticulous sidewalks throughout the UA (Virginia side) and LA (West Virginia side).  I can remember the West Virginia side being full.....not a single house left now....can't even tell they were there.
