I have a hard time believing this. I was at Marion at age 7, and they had me in pads, all white, even had the guys in white coats that would occasionally rush in.

We have seen the "Buchanan County Marching Band" at several band competitions this fall. If the county can consolidate for marching band, they can consolidate for football.

Buchanon County has had an opportunity to consolidate and build a new school for sometime but hasn’t dotted all the Is and crossed all the Ts it seems.  ‘Mainly from people in the county who want to stop it it seems but obviously it is needed for the county as enrollment continues to dwindle.

Bitter is probably doing more local recruiting than she has in a long time. I hope each kid that is offered opportunities take advantage of it and that will help pave the way for more local products to have chances.

I've stated my take on this before.  I used to be a "stick it out" hardliner; however, after going through my eldest's high school years/experience, I've change my views substantially.  There is a fine line here, though.  Parents need to understand that there are absolutely coaches/staffs, etc. that are going to be influenced by nepotism, status and favors in determining playing time and positional choices.  There are "hook-ups" and good-ole boy clubs, more so here than any other place I've been.  Not all of them and not even most of them, but damn sure some of them.  Look no further than Union.....the kid couldn't start at QB at a traditionally run-heavy offense at a 2A school but transfers to a 5A school that has modern passing concepts.  Hmmmm.......that's a great move for the kid.
Parents must have a realistic assessment of their child's talent.  This is where we lose most of the parents.  They think their child is D-1 material but have never seen a true D-1 athlete up close.  Parents need to understand the impact of their child's positional choice and evaluate if their physical characteristics are capable of that position choice.  If your kid is 6'3", 210 and runs a 4.8 40, he isn't a next level WR, he is a TE waiting to happen.  Another issue is sometimes your local high school's offensive/defensive philosophy won't allow your child opportunities to shine.  This is a valid concern.  The talented QB or WR that languishes in a Wing-T offense is hurting their ability to make an impact.  I absolutely would relocate my kid if that was the situation.  Another thing is sometimes kids want to transfer to a program that is more committed to improving and winning and player development. The good and competitive kids want to win and be in a winning environment. Can't blame them.
Now, there are definitely reasons NOT to transfer and not being able to take criticism or compete for starting position are a few of them.  This seems to be what most of the board members assumes are the issues in most cases. I don't disagree; however, there are damn sure valid reasons for kids to relocate.  There are a lot of talented kids that should have had their college degree paid for or, at least, greatly subsidized through football but stayed in detrimental situations.  "But, what about the team?"  Good question, so let's ask some of the coaches that.  Coach, what about the team?  Why did you not start the more talented kid? Most of the time there are good answers; however, sometimes there aren't.
So, if you would leave your current job for a better opportunity or more money, can you blame a kid for basically doing the same?

And from what my dad says in playing against him its hard to tell what Marsee's record would have been if there had been a 3 point line.  Marsee was 6-4 but played G and hitting shots just inside halfcourt was nothing for him.

Yeah there is no way Abingdon will finish 6th in the M7.  Having probably the best player in the district will have them 3rd at the very least.

1inStripes reacted to sup_rbeast in Union @ Abingdon
The situation at the end of the half was this: Union got a first down at the 2 and that stopped the clock until the chains were set. The ref was holding the play and clock until the marker was set. The clock operator ran the clock without the ref’s signal because he was still waiting on the yard marker. Union should have had 4 seconds to spike the ball. Because the clock had ran and expired before the ref wound the clock, they gave Union a play and the line judge ruled Abingdon offsides when Union snapped the ball during all the confusion. Actually the clock should have been set back to 4 seconds with the ball at the 2. So they got it kinda right. Union got 1 play and scored, had it been done correctly, the only difference in the way it turned out was the clock wasn’t reset and the yard on the Abingdon penalty.

A good band director cures a lot of issues, especially in terms of numbers. A bad band director can kill a band in a hurry. Bad, inconsistent leadership within a school system can lead to low numbers as well. Let me elaborate.
Band is a lot more of a time commitment than most people inside a school system are aware of and most can't be bothered to find out what our band kids are sacrificing. We constantly have to fight the school system for resources to feed these kids. Feeding 43 kids tomorrow is going to be a nightmare. Especially when a third of the kids will show up with absolutely nothing. They have to be at the school no later than 6am and won't be getting home until after midnight. It's going to be a long day for the parents as well as the kids.
Galax doesn't feed our band kids....ever! Not before or after football games. Not for band competitions. Not for band camp in the summer. Not for concert assessment. Not for district tryouts. Not for regional tryouts. Not for state auditions. Us parents have to put messages out on social media begging for handouts from the community. Thankfully, a few local churches and community members step up and help where the school system falls woefully short. But even then, it's never enough and the parents that are involved end up paying out-of-pocket for kids that aren't ours. I'm not complaining. It just is what it is. I'm happy to do it because my kids loved band. My wife was in the Marching Virginians at VT as was her brothers, three nieces and two nephews. Band is a very big part of who my family is.
I know I can be very cynical about these things but the school system always ensures the football players are well fed!!! These band kids see they are "less-than" every day and it is something the director has to overcome while the football players and coaches are getting fat and happy just a few feet down the hallway in the cafeteria. Often rubbing it in the band kids face that they have food and the band kids don't.
