How would yall like to be Martinsville. Since Patrick Co is leaving to go to the TRD, the 2A Dogs are in a district with 3A Magna Vista, Bassett, and Tunstall, 4A GW-Danville and Halifax Co. And just added 5A Mecklenburg Co. Not looking good in the Ville, 60-0 routs every week.

Jeff was very animated not only as a coach but even when he starred for back to back state championship teams at Martinsville. Then he went to Maryland and played for Lefty and learned the true art of animation from a master. I believe it's alot more to this story but we will never find out. Some of us close to the program have a pretty good idea what is going on, but it isn't really fair to Jeff to discuss it in public. Bassett has a job opening now and there is alot of people trying to get him hired there. He will land on his feet. He runs his families business and doesn't really need the headache but he loves basketball and the interaction with the kids.

GW Carver's last graduating class was 88. Magna Vista won state over Charlottesville HS in 89. Jerome Preston was a big man, played qb at Carver and MV but went on to play D-line at Va Tech in college. Good teams in Henry Co in the 80's, Martinsville played in 6 or 7 state championship games winning 5, Dewey Mason won 3, Carver won 2 and MV won 1. Alot of good bball back then.

And Martinsville beat Graham in Bluefield by about the same margin. I guess that's what he meant by saying it was a 50-50 whether they were better.

81 sub region is Radford, Glenvar, James River, Appo, Nelson Co & Alleghany. The other sub region is Patrick Co, Floyd Co, Martinsville, Dan River, Chatham & Gretna. It cuts down some on travel for the early rounds. There were other reasons but won't go into those. After the first two rounds are played the four teams left( 2 from each sub region) will play at Roanoke College with the highest seed from sub region 81 playing the lowest seed left from the Mountain sub region and vice-versa. Winners play for the region championship. It will probably be JR vs Radford in the finals. jmo

Which one was Morgan? Bradshaw was quick as lightning, but was really just an excellent athlete not a really a skilled basketball player. #30 looked like the second best player on the team to me. He was smooth around the basket and played good D against the Martinsville center. Bodied him up real well. Haven't seen Kirby miss that many short jumpers all year. Graham just jumped on us quick and Graves didn't let us make a run. When Kirby(#4 for the Dogs) fouled out halfway thru the 3rd quarter you could see all the air come out of the Dogs. All the credit in the world to Graham though, with a short bench today they just came into Cleveland Ave gym and smack us in the mouth.

The common denominator in all this is the Martinsville fans. They were the vast majority of fans who came on the floor. Tunstall( not Dan River) had a few but not many. The feeling around here now is if one gets into a scrape they'll all come involved. Less than 2 hours after this happened at a restaurant about 2 miles away from the gym there was a shootout between two groups of people, left 2 dead and 3 wounded. Mentality around here is not what it once was, it's never 1 on 1, it's always a group against another group and usually ends with someone getting killed needlessly. It goes all the way down to the youth league basketball games, they have problems there, between parents where I have seen knives pulled on each other and law enforcement being called. Really sad.

I'd say JR should be the favorite right now. They've beat GW-Danville twice and a few other good wins. We have an older team, but not alot of game experience if that makes sense. We've beat Dan River by 20, Patrick by 40 some and McMichael (NC) by 10 but have lost 3 close games. If we could have taken care of the ball better and hit foul shots we would have beaten GW and Morehead. We go 6'6" 6'3" in the front court and our best 3 point shooter is 6'4. We are a typical Bulldog team, very quick and will battle to the end but I just don't know if they have the "it" factor to win region.

Can some of you be more dramatic or judgmental? Good grief! Live your life, let others live theirs; agree to disagree. Every life lost is tragic no matter the circumstances. I took (continue to take) precautions, & even got the vaccine but I also chose to live my life, traveled & went on two vacations, visited family, had holiday celebrations...unlike @Bluefield Researcher, I have children and grandchildren and we have wonderful memories. Be blessed friends!

Should have lost at home to the 9th seed Nelson and got a lucky break and scored at the buzzer to win. Won in ot against 4 seed Chatham who had beat them in the regular season then lost to Floyd. They have no size, dont shoot well, they are quick which is their best attribute. If Union is as good as most of the teams have been from that area over the years they will be able to name the score. This game is over at the half.

Sixcat, Galax will name the score against Martinsville. Not much football talent. The new coach does have good numbers out so far at off seasons workouts. Hopefully it wont be to bad.
 

If the Lady Dogs beat Floyd Co tomorrow night then they would play Ridgeview at Magna Vista on Friday so it is what it is. Martinsville will not bring many fans whether they play at Wise or Bristol, maybe would have been a few more if they played at the same site but not enough that you would have noticed. The Dogs fans dont travel like they used to.

Region C takes all 13 teams to the regionals. What kind of sense does that make. 0-22 team could make the postseason, absolutely ridiculous.

Bob it must be a Southside thing. The Piedmont with the ref association they use is a " no blood, no foul" district. Martinsville-GW or Halifax games are like watching Wrestlemania.

Actually Martinsville is in a district with 3 3A, 2 4A, 1 5A & 1 6A. They have a hard time competing in most sports except boys and girls basketball. But they line up and do the best they can. All the complaining in the world can't change it.

Saw them against Martinsville last week. I'm sure they didn't show much against the Dogs since they are not very good this year. Everything for them on offense runs thru the QB. He's not big but is a very tough runner. Also have a fullback who is very physical and also a load at lb. Their line is very good, not overly big but very strong. Didn't throw much because they didn't have to, but the qb had a pretty good arm. Numbers are down at Byrd this year, didn't dress but about 38 kids and they don't have a jv team. Talking to some of the kids on the sidelines, they sure respect the heck out of Richlands and are looking for a very tough test Friday. Oh by the way, a couple of kids told me Basham was at Va. Western Comm. College and wasn't highly thought of as a teammate, just what they said for what it's worth. Beat the Dogs 41-6, coulda been alot worse if they had wanted it to be. Very well coached and were very disciplined 

Martinsville is really struggling with numbers. Only dressed 18 varsity players for their scrimmage and benefit game. Looked better because they dressed out over half of their jv team to give them 30 players. Hope we have an injury free game tonite because the Dogs have William Byrd and GW- Danville coming up and they definitely will feel the effects of a small roster those nights. Good luck to all the teams in the SWVA tonight and hopefully everybody stays safe.

Martinsville will be lucky to have a couple of 100 people there. The last time they came to Wise was 2 years ago with a team who eventually won the state championship and I bet they didn't have but about 200 people from here. Just don't travel like they used to.

Dogs heard you coming twice in the regular season last year and beat you both times. No reason to think that DR, Gate City, Graham couldn't do the same this year. We'll see how it works out in a couple of weeks but I'm sure you haven't scared the Wildcats, Devils or G-Men.

UVA, your right. Martinsville is not very good this year. Graham was head and shoulders better than them and the Dogs were lucky to lose by 8. Their record is 15-5, but it was because they didn't play anybody. They will probably lose their 1st round regional game. Like I've said before, this championship is GC's to lose, everybody else is playing for 2nd.
