  1. I'm not afraid to defend Phil Robbins. He was among the Top 3 football coaches in Wise County.

    Predictem Week 10

I think next season we will play an Elimination game as well. My wife who hasn't seen a single game of football this year will pick the games every week as well. If she beats you, you are eliminated. Last week she went 7-8.

  3. I'll give you three other names (Tom Turner, James Bolling, and Jim Riggs) and say that Phil Robbins is neither at the top nor the bottom of the list.

  4. Tom Turner is definitely one of them.

  5. Honestly the Phil Robbins argument is old and tired. It's not even relevant anymore. I think this original thread was about current coaches and the current thread digression is going nowhere at this point.....haha

  9. Never said that, only that playing down his accomplishments and saying any decent coach could have accomplished what he did is severely shortchanging him as a coach.

  11. That was 1982...when Phil came to PV in 1983 he changed the offense and the defense. I was in my 3rd year of P-Nut football when he first came and the entire offensive playbook for us changed over and had to be relearned. That is how thorough the program was from P-Nut on up back then, and I doubt itā€™s changed much as far as the kids learning the basic plays that Union relies on now. As far as Coach Robbins goes, folks can say what they want but he was more tedious in his weekly preparation of his team than any coach Iā€™ve ever been around. He didnā€™t wear us out in practice, but he made sure we were ready to play. You were never on the field confused or seeing something you hadnā€™t seen in practice. At times during the games, a play call would come in that the fans might question, but the QB could always change it at the line. He was a great teacher of the game, as was Barry Jones, and it showed in the results on Fridays and Saturdays.

    Tazewell @ Grundy

Tazewell looked flat last week. The team, the fans the coaching staff all seemed flat. Coach Harris and the sophomore group still had the fire but like someone said earlier I think a few coaches and a lot of players turned it in at Richlands. The biggest thing I'm seeing from this team is the very talented freshman group has either quit or are standing around injured. Tazewell has the chance to be very good the next couple of years but they have to get something out of that group of freshmen because there are no juniors, the sophomores are talented but don't have enough numbers to do it alone, the freshman group should be loaded but only one of them is contributing anything at the moment and the 8th grade group coming is a very thin group numbers wise as well. That being said I still think they might win a shoot out this week the sophmores are that good.
