Did some googling. Was about 700ish Bonanza and Pondersosas (same ownership) in the USA around 1990. By 2001, only 300. Today, only 13 total (Ponderosa and Bonanzas) and 9 or 10 of those 13 are Ponderosas, and only 3 or 4 Bonanzas left in the United States. Don't quote me on those numbers. They are close but might not be exact. I did the search last night.
Lebanon is kind of unique that it's only one out of 3 or 4 Bonanzas left in America regarding what once was, an outstanding steak house.  We are getting into "Tastee Freeze" territory here with only about 12 Tastee Freezes left in America. Just rare to find one, much like Lebanons Bonanza.

Fun fact, the song "Russell County Line" was actually written about the buffet queue at Bonanza.

And that’s why I feel like the VHSL needs an overhaul of the current system. Teams in region c and d are 1a and 2a because some of them would have to drive 45 mins just to reach another school. Teams in A and B are the opposite. Most people I know from out that way are 15 mins away from 4+ schools and that allows for them to just go to the school who is the best that year. Most teams in our area can’t contend with those teams unless they build a super squad of transfers. Two of the only teams (that I can remember) that have won state championships with zero transfers and all of the players originally from the town they played for are Lebanons two baseball state championship teams in ‘21 and ‘23.

We got one over in Giles County that has had a good run. Struggling the past 5 years, but from start to finish, not bad by any means.
Two things about this thread or points I take away. It's starting to become pretty clear by the evidence that it is tough to win at VA High and Tazewell and I'm not knocking the TTown or Bristol fans. It just is what it is in football. From Paul Wheeler to Burhead Bradley and to Crist, it ain't easy to win at VH. Look at the success those coaches had away from VH. With Tazewell, Allen's record speaks for itself now at Galax.
The above doesn't mean any coach can Never win at Tazewell/VH now or in the future in football, but it does suggest it just ain't easy to win there in football. Baseball is a whole other ballgame for both schools, consistently good for decades.

Lots of games this coming week that could determine seeding for region play in 2D
    1. Gate City
    2. Lebanon
    3. Graham
    4. Union
    5. Virginia High
    6. Central
    7. Honaker
    8. Abingdon
    9. Marion
    10. Ridgeview
I believe 1-8 could beat anyone on any given night

BigW I agree with you. From Central to Graham to VH to Union to Lebanon to Gate City, there just isn't anything standing out. I still think Graham wins the region if I had to pick a team, but largely by default and here's the thing, it's the same scenario in Region 2C. Add Floyd County and Martinsville and maybe Radford and you have 9 basketball teams that are within 7 points of each other on any given day in the West.  May sound crazy, but I think there's 9 teams thst could represent the West against JM and all 9 have a similar chance. Just my opinion.

I don’t believe Graham is the clear by far top team in 2D if they’re losing by 20 at home to just a pretty good VHS team. I think there’s a pack of 6-8 teams that could all either win the region or lose in round one.

No clue on how many came from GMS. Richlands can only go in one direction from last year which is good for Coach Davis, anything will be an improvement. If the Big R becomes a tough competitor that only helps the other SWD teams especially Tazewell & Graham. When multiple teams in same district perform at a high level , everyone is better! It makes watching a game a lot more fun when it’s close than a blowout.

Yes, it's that big of a deal.  GW with around 400 vs a small university in size, nearly 4,000 if I read correctly Dorman and Dorman won the South Carolina 5A state title last year and GW is Class 1 in Virginia.  Dorman is also ranked number 1 in 5A in SC by Maxpreps and the 80th ranked overall school in the United States.
What happened is something just completely unheard of.  I know GW is good and is a frontrunner to win the Class 1 title, but this is completely absurd folks.  Just absolute insanity that GW could pull this off.
    1st Samuel 17, Verses 49-50
49 He reached into his bag. He took out a stone. He put it in his sling. He slung it at Goliath. The stone hit him on the forehead and sank into it. He fell to the ground on his face. 50 So David won the fight against Goliath with a sling and a stone. He struck the Philistine down and killed him. He did it without even using a sword.

BandanaVTDavis4321 reacted to 1inStripes in Sarge Reed passes
To me a legend in the area.  Sarge was a long time assistant for Harry Fry at Gate City.  In the late 70s he took over as the lead Dawg at Appalachia stepping down in 79 after a 7-3 campaign handing the keys to Tom Turner to take over.  Sarge then took over the Rye Cove program in 83 and got the broke on the brink of a state title in 88.  RC had defeated Jonesville at Jonesville near the end of the regular season before losing to the Dogs in a mud bowl in the region finals during the improbable run for the crew from Jonesville.  Sarge stepped out of coaching after 1990 but returned to the Cove in 97.   He was to be he HC but took the assistant title instead so a former player, Joe Carter could be the HC.   Sarge still ran almost everything for the program for the next three years which were some of the programs winningest teams.   He took over the Twin Springs program in 2003 as they were coming out of a really rough stretch.  I asked him why he was heading up there.  Coach told me he liked a challenge and had coached at GC and RC, he might as well mark off the last county school before he retired for good. Coach stepped down after only two seasons.  He led TS to two of their programs three region final games during those two years.
Coach Reed wasnt flashy.  He wore the same clothes to practice everyday and its hard to tell how many miles had been put on his 80s Thunderbird.  He expected you to be physical as he said he only felt like he had lost two ballgames when his teams were the most physical one on the field.  The playbook wasn't super deep on either side of the ball but like the nickname "Sarge" practice was drilled like military over and over to run things to perfection.  He commanded respect but showed his "bigguns" a lot of love over the years.  RIP to a SWVA coaching legend in my book.

    Merry Christmas to everyone!!!
I have been a member since 2007 on this board...almost 17 years.  I've enjoyed it, been frustrated at times, but always keep returning to read, post and reply to others.  We have a common bond, not always common teams, just our love of sports.
The most important year of having my name listed occurred in 1984...almost 40 years ago.  That Sunday, I surrendered my life to Christ.  It has been such a blessing in my life, knowing through battles, trials I always have that constant, I have a Savior who walks with me.
This morning I was reading a monthly newsletter I receive.   The author said this and I would like to share.  It may not be for all, but it may be just what some need.
"A question often arises in our trials, one that seems universal: "Why?"
The backdrop is the story of Martha and Mary's brother Lazarus death and Jesus delayed coming there 4 days.
"Many of us address God as Martha did, "Lord why did you let this happen?  Why weren't you here for us."
The author said, "I believe we need to ask a different question, not "Why?", but "Who?' as in "Who is my redeemer?  Who is always for me?  Who walks with me through the valley of the shadow of death?   Who is in control always?  Whose promises have never failed me?"
He adds, "The difference in asking "Who?"  rather than than "Why?" can shift our path.  Asking "Why?" is an intellectual pursuit; even if we receive an answer, our spirit gains nothing.  Asking "Who?' is personal.  If we ask it, God will reveal himself to us, and we'll experience his faithfulness.  We'll also be able to trust  that our steps are in line with his glory."
This wish for a Merry Christmas to all, is a little long.  I guess you could compare it to being at Christmas dinner, if all you enjoy is the aroma of the day, and not sit down and feast from what's been prepared, your day isn't complete.
One last note, this quote is from poet Robert Frost,  and I think it is a good way to close my wishes.
"If there are no tears in the writer, there have been no tears in the reader."
    MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!
